Patent number: 6449901Abstract: A security gate for closing a passage has a pair of panels movable translationally with respect to one another to alter the effective width of the gate. An actuating mechanism for forcing the opposite ends of the panels against the sides of the passage includes a handle mounted on one of the panels controlling a latching device operative for locking the handle in a fixed relationship with respect to the other of the panels. The latching device in accordance with one embodiment includes a rack and brake. When the latch is engaged, a cam also controlled by the handle engages the panel on which the handle is mounted to force the two panels translationally further apart so as to bear firmly against the sides of the passage to hold the gate in position.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 2000Date of Patent: September 17, 2002Assignee: Safety 1st, Inc.Inventors: Steven Gibree, Anthony Wong, Brian Sundberg, Steven Torosian

Publication number: 20020002741Abstract: A bassinet and bouncer combination is provided. The frame of the bassinet and bouncer combination is readily foldable such that it is easily carried and stored. The bassinet and bouncer combination may include a seat positionable in at least two positions such that it may be used as a traditional bassinet (reclined position) or traditional bouncer (sitting-up position). A baby support has a base with a portion that is adapted to lie on the floor, and a pair of arms that extend from their first ends upwardly and rearwardly from the portion and on one side thereof when in a deployed configuration. A connector mechanism joins the first ends of the arms to the portion enabling the arms to pivot through an arc so as to lie substantially in a same plane as the portion and on the other side thereof. A collapsible frame for a baby receptacle is attached to the other ends of the arms when in a collapsed position lying in substantially a same plane as the arms.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2001Publication date: January 10, 2002Applicant: Safety 1st., IncInventors: Jorge Tomas, Allan Ferraro, Brian C. Patent number: 5924242Abstract: A safety gate for use in obstructing doorways, passageways and similar openings to restrict the movement of children. The safety gate includes a panel that can be readily secured in and removed from the opening by extending and retracting a bumper mounted on an outer rail of the panel. The bumper is biased to the extended position in a first direction by a spring that is moved in a second direction transverse to the first direction. The gate can include a pair of extendable bumpers and a pair of springs that independently bias the bumpers to the extended position when moved in the transverse second direction relative to the bumpers. The spring can be a leaf spring having one end attached to a drive member, which can be moved in the first direction, and an opposite end that is slidably supported on a surface of the drive member.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1996Date of Patent: July 20, 1999Assignee: Safety 1st, Inc.Inventors: Jason Macari, Brian H. Patent number: 5577277Abstract: A collapsible children's bed rail which can conveniently be disassembled for storage and transport. The bed rail has a side panel made up of two detachable sections which snap together to form a continuous panel when in use and can be stored in face to face relationship when separated. A pair of supports attach to the bottom of the assembled side panel and extend perpendicular to it and fit underneath the mattress of the bed with which the bed rail is to be used and hold the side panel in operative position. The supports may be collapsed so that their components lie in face to face relationship, and they can be stored in cavities in the bottoms of the panel sections when detached from the side panel.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1995Date of Patent: November 26, 1996Assignee: Safety 1st, Inc.Inventors: Brian C. Patent number: 5519905Abstract: A bed side rail particularly suitable for use by childred has a protective panel which carries a pair of arms that fit under a mattress to support the panel at the edge of a bed. Hinges connect the panel to the arms so that the panel may be moved between an operative position wherein it extends upwardly from the arms above the level of the mattress to an inoperative position wherein it extends downwardly from the arms out of the way. The panel carries a flashlight which may readily be removed from the panel by a small child. The flashlight has an actuator in the grip which turns the flashlight on when the handle is grasped by the child, and the light will remain on for a selected period after the child replaces the flashlight in the pocket of the panel and releases the actuator. The flashlight is retained in the pocket so that it will not fall out when the panel is moved between operative and inoperative positions and yet may be removed from the pocket by the child when desired.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1995Date of Patent: May 28, 1996Assignee: Safety 1st, Inc.Inventors: Michael S.
