Abstract: A cutting insert, intended for chip removing machining includes a cutting geometry surface having a cutting edge from which extends a primary chamfer that transforms into a chip removing surface. The chip removing surface is inclined in a inwards/downwards direction in order to permit sinking of a chip being formed, and transforms into a deflection surface arranged to initiate deflection of the chip from the cutting insert. The angle of inclination of the chip removing surface does not exceed 18°. The level difference in elevation between the primary chamfer and the chip deflection surface amounts to maximally 0.20 mm.
Abstract: A double ended metal-cutting insert includes a pair of circular cutting edges disposed at respective end surfaces of the insert. Each end surface includes an upper portion connected to the cutting edge, and a lower portion connected to the upper portion by a concave transition portion. The lower portion is recessed relative to the upper portion in a direction toward the opposite cutting edge. The lower portion is a flat face oriented perpendicular to the bottom surface.

Abstract: According to the present invention there is provided a body at least partially coated with one or more refractory layers of which at least one layer essentially consist of &agr;-Al2O3. Said &agr;-Al2O3 layer consists of essentially equiaxed grains with an average grain size of <1 &mgr;m and with a bimodal grain size distribution with coarser grains with an average grainsize in the interval 0.5-1 &mgr;m and finer grains with an average grainsize of <0.5 &mgr;m. The Al2O3 layer further contains striated zones containing titanium (>5 at %) but no nitrogen or carbon. This particular microstructure is obtained by temporarily stopping the gases needed for the growth of the Al2O3 layer and introducing TiCl4.
Abstract: A rotatable tool includes a rotatable body defining an axis of rotation. The body forms a seat configured to receive a cutting insert. The seat includes a bottom surface and a radial support upstanding therefrom. The bottom surface includes a screw-receiving hole which intersects the bottom surface to form a port therein. The screw-receiving hole includes a female screw-threaded portion spaced from the port by a non-threaded portion. A fastening screw secures the cutting insert to the body. The screw includes a shaft having at one end thereof a male screw thread connectable to the female screw threaded portion, and at an opposite end thereof a head. The shaft also includes a non-threaded portion disposed between the male screw thread and the head and sized to be received in the non-threaded portion of the screw-receiving hole.
Abstract: A cutting bit includes a steel body on which a carbide cutting tip is brazed. Disposed rearwardly of a rearwardmost end of the tip, on a tapered side surface of a head of the bit body is an annular ledge which extends laterally outwardly sufficiently far to deflect cuttings laterally away from the bit. The ledge can be formed integrally with the bit body as the result of a machining operation, or the ledge can comprise a split ring that is elastically held in a groove formed in the tapered side surface. The ledge extends perpendicularly to a center axis of the bit, or is inclined slightly forwardly, in order to trap cuttings, such as asphalt, to cause a protective ring of asphalt to be formed in front of the ledge.
Abstract: A cutting tool (2) includes a front part (5), which has a cutting insert (6), as well as a rear part (7), which is detachably mountable in a holder (3) in an appurtenant machine. The tool (2) comprises a plurality of nozzles (13), which have the purpose of spraying jets (4) of high pressure cooling liquid towards the cutting insert (6). Supply of cooling liquid to these nozzles is guaranteed via a duct system positioned inside the tool, which system includes an equally large number of mutually spaced-apart ducts as the number of nozzles, the nozzles being adjusted in order to direct the jets thereof towards different points of impact on one and the same cutting insert. In this connection, it is possible to close the individual ducts inside the tool individually in order to enable spraying of only one jet at a time towards the appurtenant point of impact on the cutting insert.

Abstract: A male portion for percussive rock drilling includes sections of reduced cross-sectional area. At least one thread for percussive rock drilling is provided at an end of the male portion. The end of the male portion comprises an abutment surface for the transfer of impact waves. The length of the portion is defined as the length of an imaginary cylinder from a plane of the impact surface to a point where the plane ceases to contact a crest of the thread, wherein the length divided by the external diameter of the cylinder lies within a range of 1-2.

Abstract: A method of lengthening the useful life of heating elements that are formed essentially from molybdenum silicide and molybdenum tungsten silicide and different alloys of those basic materials, at times when the elements are operated at a relatively low temperature, such as a temperature in the range of 400-800° C. The gaseous atmosphere surrounding the elements as they operate has a water content that is less than about one percent by volume.
Abstract: A method of making a cemented carbide body having WC with an average grain size of 0.5-4 &mgr;m, 3.5-9 wt % Co and <2 wt % carbides of Ta, Ti and Nb, and with a substoichiometric carbon content, the method including sintering the body such that an eta phase containing structure is obtained with a size of 1-15 &mgr;m and a content of 10 vol. %-35 vol. %, and subjecting the body to recarburization such that the eta phase in a 50-350 &mgr;m wide intermediate zone is transformed to WC+Co without essentially changing its Co-content.

Abstract: The chip removing machining of a workpiece is performed by a cutting tool which includes a cutting insert. In order to cool the cutting insert, one or more over-cooling nozzles is arranged for directing a jet of cooling liquid downwardly toward a contact area between the workpiece and a chip surface of the cutting insert. A sub-cooling nozzle is arranged for directing a jet of cooling liquid upwardly toward a contact area between the workpiece and a flank surface of the cutting insert. A jet of cooling liquid can be emitted from only the over-cooling nozzle, or from only the sub-cooling nozzle, or from both of those nozzles simultaneously.
Abstract: A parting tool includes a thin holder forming a groove open at one end, and a double-ended cutting insert mounted in the groove. The insert includes front and rear cutting edges and a rear end surface abutting against a rear support surface of the groove. The rear support surface is configured to enable differently shaped double-ended inserts to be mounted therein without the occurrence of contact between the rear cutting edge and a surface of the holder.

Abstract: A rotatable cutting tool includes a rotatable tool body and a replaceable cutting tip for chip removing machining. The tool body includes a forward free end having a first dovetail coupling part formed thereon. The cutting tip includes a front cutting end and a rear mounting end. The mounting end includes a second dovetail coupling part joined to the first dovetail coupling part.
