  • Patent number: 5450830
Abstract: A fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine is provided wherein fuel supply compensation for low speed, low load or abnormal conditions is variable for a multi-cylinder configuration having one or more cylinders ceased or reduced in operation. Of particular utility in a vertical cylinder bank with compact space for exhaust gas collection and discharge, such as in an outboard motor, said fuel compensation relies upon engine parameters including engine speed and fuel-air ratio to improve engine performance.

  • Patent number: 5450828
Abstract: Embodiments of engine speed control and methods of maintaining engine speed control and fuel injection so as to minimize hunting and improve exhaust emission control, particularly at low speeds. This is achieved by setting a fixed amount of fuel supplied to the engine per cycle, per cylinder when the engine speed is below a predetermined speed or a speed below a predetermined speed is called for. Engine speed control is maintained under the constant fuel position by controlling the spark advance in one embodiment. A manual spark advance and automatic spark advance are depicted.

  • Patent number: 5449306
Abstract: A shifting mechanism for an outboard drive of a watercraft provides reduced coupling shock when the forward gears are engaged by a dual clutch assembly, as well as provides for consistent and quick engagement of the clutch assembly with the gear. The shifting mechanism involves a first gear and a corresponding first clutch, and a second gear and a corresponding second clutch. A plunger carries the first and second clutches which are arranged on the plunger at unequal distances from their respective gears. This nonuniform spacial relationship between the clutches and gears causes one clutch to engage its corresponding gear before the other clutch engages its corresponding gear. The staggered engagement decreases shock on the transmission and permits quicker engagement between the clutches and gears.

  • Patent number: 5445546
Abstract: A shift assistor for a shifting mechanism of a watercraft outboard drive provides a simply structured and compact device which establishes engagement of the transmission under a resilient force and disengagement under a positive force. The shift assistor includes a shift plunger which is coupled to a shift operator and an actuator casing which is coupled to the transmission. A detent coupling is directly operable between the plunger and the casing to couple the plunger to the casing when the transmission is engaged either in the forward or reverse drive directions, and to release the plunger from the casing when the transmission is disengaged.

  • Patent number: 5433634
Abstract: An exhaust system for a marine propulsion outboard drive wherein the exhaust gases are normally discharged to the atmosphere at a point below the level of the body of water in which the watercraft is operating. A catalyst bed is provided in the exhaust system and the catalyst bed is protected from damage by pumping water from the exhaust conduit in response to certain conditions. These conditions may be either rapid deceleration of the engine or watercraft, stopping of the engine, or any of a combination of sensed factors. The water is pumped by a water pump which is positioned either in the outboard drive or in the hull of the associated watercraft. The pumping of water is initiated for only a predetermined time or until the sensed condition no longer is existent.

  • Patent number: 5412984
Abstract: The present invention details several embodiments of a vessel speed measuring and indicating system, having a pressure intake port within a leading edge of a lower outboard portion of a vessel propulsion arrangement, which is structured to prevent debris, such as driftwood or the like, from entering and becoming lodged within the pressure intake port during operation of the vessel, so that the vessel speed can be accurately measured and displayed. The constructions detailed herein include a projection which is formed in the vicinity of the pressure intake port. The projection may be slightly above the pressure intake port, below the pressure intake port, or both above as well as below the pressure intake port.

  • Patent number: 5408872
Abstract: A two cycle, crankcase compression having fuel injection controlled in response to sensed intake air flow. The intake air flow is measured by measuring the crankcase pressure at crank angles corresponding to scavenge port opening and scavenge port closing of the engine. However, the actual angle at which the pressure is measured is adjusted to compensate for delay in the sensor reading and variations in the electric power supplied to the sensor. In addition, an arrangement is shown for protecting the sensor from corrosion.
