Abstract: A new process for the preparation of a 3-(4'-bromobiphenyl-4-yl)tetralin-1-one known as a key intermediate for the production of rodenticides and clinical medicines is provided. The title compound is prepared from P-bromobiphenylbenzylketone in three steps, wherein one of key inventions is dehydroxylation of 3-(4'-bromobiphenyl)-3-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid ethyl ester using trialkylsilane in trifluoroacetic acid. This new process offers a high yield with a facile way and is more suitable for a commercial production than the prior art methods.

Abstract: An optical nondestructive testing method of composite materials utilizes optical interferometry to find the resonant vibration from at least one surface of the target part of an object being inspected, and also determines the resonant frequency at that time. Another resonant frequency exhibiting the same resonant vibration is then obtained from the rear surface of the part of the object being inspected and the two resonant frequencies are used to derive the depth of defects in the object.

Abstract: The invention relates to a procedure of obtaining a lipid mixture rich in the content of .gamma.-linolenic acid or glycerides thereof from cultured fungus bodies of a filamentous Mortierella fungus. The invention proposes, on one hand, to fractionally extract the lipid mixture from the fungus bodies under mechanical disintegration in two steps first with an alcohol containing water to give a fraction rich in the polar lipids and then with a hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. hexane, to give a fraction lean in the polar lipids. The invention proposes, on the other hand, to enrich a lipid mixture relative to .gamma.-linolenic acid by fractionally crystallizing a part of a starting lipid mixture in a solution of a specified solvent so that the uncrystallized fraction in the mother liquor contains a lipid mixture in which the content of .gamma.-linolenic acid is remarkably increased in comparison with the starting lipid mixture.

Abstract: In a method of manufacturing a semiconductor device comprising melting an amorphous or polycrystalline first semiconductor layer formed on the surface of a first dielectric layer by irradiating energy rays thereon, and converting the same into single crystals by the subsequent lowering of the temperature and forming a second dielectric layer and a second semiconductor layer on the first semiconductor layer. Energy rays are irradiated under the condition capable of melting the first semiconductor layer through the second semiconductor layer and the second dielectric layer and, after the completion of the conversion into single crystals, the second semiconductor layer and the second dielectric layer are eliminated through etching.
