Abstract: Dimethacrylates are provided having the following chemical structure: ##STR1## where ##STR2## is a saturated, 6 membered, monocyclic, hydrocarbyl ring system; R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are the same or different and are hydrogen or alkyl or alkoxy groups having 1 to 12 carbon atoms; andR.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are the same or different and are hydrogen or groups of the formula: ##STR3## where R.sub.6 is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic group having 1 to 14 carbon atoms, provided that at least one of the groups R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 is a group of the formula: ##STR4## These compounds are useful in dental material which cures to form polymers having high mechanical strength, low water sorption, resistance to staining, good color stability when exposed to short-wave radiation (e.g., sunlight) and good chemical resistance to the oral environment. Also provided are a method for polymerizing this compound in situ on teeth and a tooth comprising a polymer of this compound.

Abstract: Dimethacrylates are provided having the following chemical structure: ##STR1## where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 may be the same or different and are cyclohexyl or phenyl groups which may be substituted or unsubstituted; andR.sub.3 is an aliphatic cycloaliphatic or aromatic group having 6 to 14 carbon atoms. These compounds are useful in dental material which cures to form polymers having high mechanical strength, low water sorption, resistance to staining, good color stability when exposed to short-wave radiation (e.g., sunlight) and good chemical resistance to the oral environment. Abstract: A solid fatty polyamide dissolved in a volatile organic solvent has been found effective for preparing cavities of teeth for restoration. For example, when this solution is applied to a cavity in the form of a dental cavity varnish, the organic solvent may be evaporated to leave behind a continuous polyamide film which is compatible with methacrylate resin type restoratives. Solid fatty polyamides are generally derived from the reaction product of partially polymerized unsaturated fatty acids with aliphatic diamines. The present invention relates to methods for preparing cavities with these polyamides as well as to compositions containing these polyamides.

Abstract: Adhesives and methods are provided for fixed prosthesis by bonding a pontic to abutment teeth. The adhesive is preferably a methacrylate based resin adhesive comprising 2.5-30% of an elastomer which is a polymer of a substituted or unsubstituted butadiene monomer. A preferred etchant for preparing the abutment for adhesive bonding is 2-15% HCl. The prosthesis technique does not irreversibly affect the abutment teeth. The preferred adhesive may also be used for immobilizing injured or periodontically affected teeth or for stabilizing teeth in order to retain the results of orthodontic treatment.
Abstract: Dimethacrylates are provided having the following chemical structure: ##STR1## wherein n represents a number of 2 to 8;R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are the same or different and are hydrogen or groups of the formula: ##STR2## where R.sub.3 is an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic group having 1 to 14 carbon atoms. These compounds are useful in dental material which cures to form polymers having high mechanical strength, low water sorption, resistance to staining, good color stability when exposed to short-wave radiation (e.g., sunlight) and good chemical resistance to the oral environment. Abstract: A dental hygienic device including a unique prophylactic cup for removal of dental plaque and/or polishing teeth. The generally bell shaped prophylactic cup includes an inner generally concave working surface for engagement of the tooth surfaces. The inner surface will form an outwardly flaired lip to conform with and adapt to the irregular surfaces of teeth and for limited, controlled entry into the gingival crevice. The inner working surface therefor abrasive members which may vary according to the distance from the outer lip of the inner surface and the outer surface of the cup includes a member which will limit entry of the outer lip of the cup into the gingival crevice.
