  • Patent number: 4001307
Abstract: A process for the preparation of 4-halo-3-methylbut-2-enyl lower fatty acid esters from isoprene comprising the steps of halogenating isoprene in the presence of a dipolar aprotic solvent to produce a reaction mixture of which a predominant portion is 1,4-dihalo-2-methyl-2-butene, and esterifying said dihalo-butene under esterification reaction conditions with an alkali metal salt of a lower fatty acid. The amount of alkali metal salt is sufficient stoichiometrically to replace the halogen ion in the 1-position with the anion of said alkali metal salt, a substantial portion of the product of the esterification reaction being desired 4-halo-3-methylbut-2-enyl lower fatty acid ester.

  • Patent number: 3991874
Abstract: A method and mechanism for automatically performing a typewriter function such as backspacing a carriage where the backspace mechanism is actuated upon removal of an insertable and removable ribbon cartridge. Particularly adaptable to correcting typing errors, the present invention will automate the final backspacing operation that is necessary before the correct character is typed and normal typing can be continued. A modified ribbon cartridge containing error correction ribbon carries at least one abutment that engages a backspace coupled actuating mechanism upon removal of the ribbon cartridge. Therefore, automatic backspacing of the typewriter carriage occurs after a modified ribbon cartridge is inserted into the typewriter to perform an error correction operation simply by removing the error correction ribbon cartridge.

  • Patent number: 3987885
Abstract: A method and mechanism for automatic actuation of single and repeat typewriter functions such as backspacing upon the insertion and removal of a ribbon cartridge. The ribbon cartridge, carrying a bidirectional camming abutment having a pair of converging cam surfaces is inserted into the typewriter, whereupon a first cam surface engages a backspace coupled cam lever within the typewriter, thereby actuating a typewriter backspace function. The cam lever includes a pair of convergingly directed cam surfaces joined by a dwell surface. As the cartridge camming abutment contacts the dwell surface, it actuates a repeat backspace function until the camming abutment passes beyond the dwell surface of the cam lever. The camming abutment includes a second cam surface that engages a second cam surface disposed on the cam lever to actuate a backspace function upon removal of the ribbon cartridge.

  • Patent number: 3981385
Abstract: An interposer in a typing machine key action is supported by an arcuate spring and a shelf. When a key lever bears against the arcuate spring to release the interposer from the shelf, the arcuate spring snaps the interposer against a pawl that engages a power roll to initiate a typing operation. Potential energy is restored to the arcuate spring as the key lever lifts the interposer back to rest position. The arcuate spring serves as a support and frictionless pivot for the interposer and biases the interposer against the shelf while providing energy to impel the interposer against the pawl.
