Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention allow for the generation of at least one estimated value of a first parameter that is derived from a regularly measured value of a second parameter. In addition, a single control feedback signal can be adjusted via updating of the estimated and regularly measured values in a control feedback loop. At least one spiral track can be written to storage media based on the single control feedback signal, where the single control feedback signal can be received from an compensating circuit that receives the at least one estimated value of the first parameter, which can refer to position, and the at least one regularly measured value, which can refer to velocity.
Abstract: Systems, devices, apparatuses, and methods for segmented read-modify-write operations are disclosed. The examples provided can allow a system to perform a read-modify-write (RMW) operation for data stored in a main storage that has a larger data size than is capable of being stored in an available buffer. Examples of such a system include discs having bands of shingled tracks. In such example, each band can be split into segments containing one or more tracks and a read-modify-write-write (RMWW) operation can be performed for each segment. Further, a logical guard band can be implemented to protect the segments from overwriting a next track in a shingled band. Also, multiple scratchpads may be implemented.
Abstract: Provided herein is an apparatus, including a servo pattern having magnetic features, wherein each magnetic feature of the magnetic features includes a single magnetic domain; a first population of the magnetic features; a second population of the magnetic features; and a selective magnetization means for selective magnetization of either one of the first population or the second population of magnetic features over the other.
Abstract: Various embodiments may generally be directed to a variable resistance data storage device and a method of managing the device. A data storage device may have at least a controller configured to re-characterize at least one variable resistance memory cell in response to an identified variance from a predetermined resistance threshold.

Abstract: A printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) is connected to a frame within a passage. The PCBA includes a circuitry package attached to a printed circuit board. The circuitry package has a peripheral edge extending from the printed circuit board to a distal end joined to a cap. A cover is attached to the frame to enclose the PCBA. A thermal interface material (TIM) is disposed between the cover and the PCBA, the TIM defining an opening sized to receivingly engage the circuitry package in a close mating engagement contacting the TIM simultaneously against the cap and the peripheral edge to conduct heat away from the circuitry package. A heat conductor attached to the other side of the printed circuit board in an overlapping opposition to the circuitry package conducts heat away from the printed circuit board that is generated by the circuitry package.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a slider structure having a waveguide and a cavity configured to align a laser to the waveguide. The cavity includes a plurality of solder bumps on a bottom of the cavity configured to electrically and thermally couple the laser to the slider. At least one mechanical stopper is disposed in the cavity to facilitate vertical alignment between an output of the laser and an input of the waveguide. At least one solder bump is disposed on the mechanical stopper to facilitate lateral alignment between the output of the laser and the input of the waveguide in response to a reflow of the solder bumps.
Abstract: Host data to be written to a recording medium is categorized as one of sequential data or random data. The sequential data is written to a first track width on the recording medium. The random data is written to a second track width on the recording medium, the second track width being larger than the first track width.
Abstract: A write head includes a cavity configured to couple a laser diode to the write head. A bottom of the cavity includes a heat conductive element configured to contact the laser diode, a plurality of thermal studs disposed below the heat conductive element, and a substrate disposed below the thermal studs. The heat conductive element, thermal studs, and substrate are thermally coupled to draw heat from the laser diode.

Abstract: Fixed patterns are written on a track of a heat-assisted, recording medium at multiple, heater-induced write clearances via a recording head. The writing involves heating the recording medium via a near-field transducer of the recording head. Amplitudes of the fixed patterns are read back at a predetermined read clearance. A clearance difference between a start and an end of a first data sector of the track is determined based on the amplitudes. A narrow, laser-induced protrusion is estimated at the near-field transducer based on the clearance difference.
Abstract: A flexible member is coupled between an actuator arm and a slider. The flexible member facilitates relative motion in a tangential direction of a rotating medium. The relative motion is detected via a displacement sensor, and a friction between the slider and the rotating medium is determined based on the sensed relative motion.
