Patents Assigned to Seagate Technologies
  • Patent number: 8792201
Abstract: Processes include aligning a disc with a template at a location so that the pattern from the template is transferred to the disc in a relative orientation. The relative orientation provides that when the disc with the transferred pattern is finally assembled into a hard disc drive, an inner diameter of the spindle hole of the disc may be abutted against an outer diameter of the disc drive spindle, and the data-containing patterns on the discs will be aligned concentrically with a center of the disc drive spindle. While the data-containing patterns are aligned concentrically with the disc drive spindle, the substrate itself is allowed to be non-concentric.

  • Patent number: 8788551
Abstract: Random numbers are generated using entropic properties associated with circuit hardware. • Patent number: 8786977
Abstract: Vibration of a transducer slider can be used during slider fly height calibration to detect contact of the transducer slider with a disc surface. Amplification of the vibration may cause the transducer slider to tap the disc surface rather than drag across the disc surface when detecting contact with the disc surface. Amplification may be achieved by applying an in-phase AC signal to the transducer slider at the same frequency as the vibration of the slider. Reduced contact between the slider and the disc surface reduces wear on and the possibility of damage to the transducer slider and/or the disc surface. Once the fly height of the transducer slider is calibrated, the AC signal may be shifted out-of-phase with the slider vibration to dampen the slider vibration.

  • Publication number: 20140201437
Abstract: Method and apparatus for managing data in a memory. In accordance with some embodiments, a control circuit monitors access operations upon a set of data blocks in a memory of a data storage device. The data blocks have a first logical address by which the data blocks are identified by a requestor coupled to the data storage device. When the monitored access operations indicate a potential data degradation condition may arise with the data blocks, the requestor assigns a different, second logical address to the data block.

  • Patent number: 8782463
Abstract: A storage device is detected as being decoupled from an apparatus. At least one partition of the storage device is part of a storage volume that includes an array of separate storage devices in an initial configuration prior to being decoupled. In response to the storage device being recoupled to the apparatus, a universally unique identifier (UUID) of the storage device is detected. In response to determining the UUID of the storage device was previously associated with the storage volume, the storage volume is reconfigured/restored to include the at least one partition of the storage device in the initial configuration.

  • Patent number: 8782505
Abstract: The variability of outer code failure rate of memory pages of a solid state memory device can be reduced by selectively grouping the pages included in the outer code words. The data in the page groups are encoded into outer code words which are stored in the memory device. Encoding the data of the page groups and storing the encoded data includes intermittently accumulating an outer code parity as the pages are sequentially stored in the memory device according to a particular order. The pages can be randomly selected for the page groups or can be grouped based on predicted or measured failure rate information. In a memory device having multi-level memory cells, predicting the failure rate of a page can be based on whether the page is a most significant bit (MSB) page or a least significant bit (LSB) page.
