Abstract: A fluid dynamic bearing apparatus includes a first minute gap, a second minute gap, a third minute gap, a fourth minute gap, and a fifth minute gap. A flow of a lubricating oil from the fifth minute gap to the fourth minute gap is caused by a plurality of dynamic pressure generating grooves arranged within the fluid dynamic bearing apparatus. This flow causes air bubbles mixed in the lubricating oil within the fifth minute gap to flow toward the third minute gap and be discharged to an outside of the fluid dynamic bearing apparatus through the third minute gap. The fluid dynamic bearing apparatus further includes a plurality of dynamic pressure generating grooves and an annular groove.
Abstract: A magnetic tunnel junction device includes a reference magnetic layer and a magnetic free layer including first and second magnetic elements that are magnetically exchange coupled. The magnetic exchange coupling between the first and second magnetic elements is configured to achieve a switching current distribution less than about 200% and a long term thermal stability criterion of greater than about 60 kBT.
Abstract: A variety of data storage devices, methods and systems are implemented for control of memory associated with backup functionality. One such data storage device includes a power circuit that provides main power. The data storage device has a first solid-state memory circuit that maintains data in the absence of electrical power. A second memory circuit is subject to data loss in the absence of electrical power. A storage circuit stores energy and provides the stored energy to the second memory circuit in response to a loss of main power. A test circuit discharges a portion of the stored energy to provide output data indicative of power-providing capabilities of the storage circuit. A memory controller controls data transfers to the data storage device by temporarily storing data destined for the first solid-state memory circuit and setting the amount of memory available for temporary storage in response to the output data.

Abstract: A method of creating a stack having multiple layers of material deposited onto a substrate. The method includes controlling atom mobility to provide a uniform thickness for the deposited layers and increasing or decreasing a deposition temperature to control the atom mobility and/or roughness for the deposited layers. In an illustrated embodiment, the deposition temperature is increased to increase the atom mobility and the deposition temperature is decreased to decrease the atom mobility to control roughness and provide a uniform layer thickness. In another embodiment, the deposition temperature is increased or decreased for different portions of a layer. As described, a first amount of a material is deposited at a first deposition temperature to provide an optimum surface interface with a prior layer and a second amount of the material is deposited at a second deposition temperature to provide a uniform layer thickness.

Abstract: Methods and systems involve collecting memory device parameters and using memory device parameters to determine memory wear information. A set of first parameters associated with wear of the memory device is monitored for at least one memory unit of the memory device. The first parameters are compared to respective trigger criterion. If the comparison reveals that one or more of the first parameters are beyond their trigger criterion, then collection of a second set of parameters is triggered. The second parameters are also indicative of the wear of the memory device. The set of first parameters may overlap the set of second parameters. The set of second parameters are used to develop memory wear information. In some implementations, the memory wear information may be configuration information used to configure the read/write channel to compensate for wear of the memory device. In some implementations, the memory wear information may be used to predict or estimate the lifetime of the device.

Abstract: As apparatus and associated method for a dual active-active array storage system with a first controller with top level control of a first memory space and a second controller with top level control of a second memory space different than the first memory space. A seek manager residing in only one of the controllers defines individual command profiles derived from a combined list of data transfer requests from both controllers. A policy engine continuously collects qualitative information about a network load to both controllers to dynamically characterize the load, and governs the seek manager to continuously correlate each command profile in relation to the load characterization.

Abstract: The present disclosure describes various techniques resolving block boundary issues and reconstructing logical blocks in a block access storage device when there are resulting mismatches between logical and physical block sizes or alignments, such that logical blocks span multiple physical block boundaries in irregular ways. In one example, a method comprises the following features: receiving logical block addresses that are associated with a sequence of logical blocks; and locating a first portion of a logical block within a first physical block that is stored in a block access storage device based upon a logical block address of the logical block, wherein the logical block is part of the sequence of logical blocks, and wherein at least two logical blocks within the sequence of logical blocks have different sizes.

Abstract: A device includes a magnet and a magnetizer. The magnetizer is operable to rotate with respect to the magnet. The rotation generates an acoustic pure tone at a particular frequency. A combination of the magnet and the magnetizer has a magnetic profile. The combination is altered to superimpose a particular harmonic shape on the magnetic profile to reduce the acoustic pure tone at the particular frequency.

Abstract: Cells of a solid-state, non-volatile memory are assigned to one of a plurality of groups. Each group is defined by expected symbols stored in the cells in view of actual symbols read from the cells. Based on cell counts within the groups, it can be determined that a shift in a reference voltage will reduce a collective bit error rate of the cells. The shift can be applied to data access operations affecting the cells.
Abstract: Approaches for determining the timing latency of a communication path are described. Some embodiments involve a method for testing timing latency. A signal is driven on a first data path and is returned through a second data path through a loop back element. The timing latency of at least a portion of the communication path that includes the first data path and the second data path is tested using the signal returned on the second data path. The gain of the second data path is adjusted to a test value during the testing of the timing latency.
