Patent number: 5115950Abstract: A dispersing closure is provided for an opening in an squeeze-type container and includes a body defining a dispensing passage for communicating between the container interior and the container exterior through a container opening. A flexible, self-sealing valve is provided with a peripheral flange, and the valve is mounted in the body for opening in response to increased container pressure. The body is of unitary construction and is molded from thermoplastic material with an upstanding peripheral wall that is subsequently deformed over the valve flange to retain the valve in the body. A preferred process for making the closure includes the steps of molding a unitary closure body with a seat for the valve flange surrounded by a peripheral wall, disposing the valve flange on the seat, and then deforming an upper portion of the wall into a generally annular configuration extending radially inwardly to overlie the seat and clamp the valve flange between the seat and the deformed portion of the wall.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1991Date of Patent: May 26, 1992Assignee: Seaquist Closures a divison of Pittway CorporationInventor: Robert D. Patent number: 5065911Abstract: A closure is provided for use on a container. The closure includes a body for being mounted to the container over the container opening and defines a dispensing orifice. A separate lid is mounted on the body for pivoting between a closed position and an open position. A resiliently deformable biasing member extends from the lid and has a distal end for engaging the body. Restraining walls are provided on the body for restraining the distal end of the biasing member whereby the biasing member is most stressed when the lid is at an over center position between the open and closed positions to thereby bias the lid toward one of the open and closed positions.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1990Date of Patent: November 19, 1991Assignee: Seaquist ClosuresInventors: Robert D. Patent number: 5058775Abstract: A toggle-acting dispensing closure which is resistant to premature actuation of said actuator during shipping and handling prior to purchase, and which provides evidence that access has been gained to the contents of the associated container. A removable tear tab means is provided on the closure actuator or on the body of the closure which interferes initially with the pivoting of the actuator on the body. The tear tab means is frangibly connected to the actuator or body and is positioned between the body and actuator adjacent the actuator finger pad.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1990Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Assignee: Seaquist Closures, a Division of Pittway CorporationInventors: Richard A. Patent number: 5038957Abstract: A two-piece, snap-action closure includes a body and a separate lid. A biasing member is provided on the body to engage the rear portion of the lid to bias the lid to the full closed position or to the full open position from a bistable over center point. In a preferred embodiment, the biasing member is a cantilevered tab. In another embodiment the biasing member is a resiliently flexible member that presents a convex configuration toward the lid in the closed position. In one embodiment, the lid is pivotally mounted to the body with pivot members having oppositely facing flat sides which are received in rectangular receiving apertures. In another embodiment, the pivot members are cylindrical and are received in semi-cylindrical receiving apertures. In a preferred form of the closure, an angled cam surface is provided on the body to guide each pivot member into the receiving apertures.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1990Date of Patent: August 13, 1991Assignee: Seaquist Closures, a division of Pittway CorporationInventor: Richard A. Patent number: 5008066Abstract: A container having a unitary hollow receptacle and closure is formed according to a process is which an injection molding step forms a preform of thermoplastic material having (1) a hollow body, (2) a closure base at one end of the hollow body to define an opening into the hollow body, and (3) a closure cover spaced from the closure base opening but connected to the closure base. The process further includes blow molding the preform hollow body to form the hollow receptacle so that it extends from the closure base and has a configuration different than the preform hollow body.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1989Date of Patent: April 16, 1991Assignee: Seaquist ClosuresInventor: Bruce M. Patent number: 5007545Abstract: A member is provided for being mounted on the neck of a container. The member has a skirt with at least a first annular section extending axially below an annular bead on the container. A plurality of circumferentially spaced arms are flexibly connected to, and extend from, the skirt first annular section at a first bend line to accommodate radially inward pivoting of each arm to an orientation generally alongside the skirt first annular section. A plurality of circumferentially spaced tabs are each flexibly connected to, and extend radially inwardly of, one of the arms at a second bend line to accommodate radially inward pivoting of each tab toward the container when sufficient relative axial displacement is effected between the closure and the container. A novel method is provided for arranging unique mold parts for molding the mounting member and for moving the mold parts to release the molded mounting member in an assembly-ready orientation for application to the container.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1990Date of Patent: April 16, 1991Assignee: Seaquist ClosuresInventor: Leo R. Imbery, Jr.

Patent number: 5005737Abstract: A fluid dispensing closure is provided for use on a squeeze-type container. The closure includes a resilient dome member projecting convexly outwardly over the opening. The dome member defines at least one slit extending through the dome member. The dome member is sufficiently resilient to have a normally closed configuration in which the slit is sealed closed when the pressure inside the dome member equals the pressure outside the dome member. The dome member is sufficiently flexible to be deformed further outwardly from and relative to the normally closed configuration for opening the slit when the container is squeezed to exert a predetermined fluid pressure against the inside of the dome member whereby the fluid product can discharge from the container through the open slit.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1989Date of Patent: April 9, 1991Assignee: Seaquist ClosuresInventor: Robert D. Rohr

Patent number: 4964539Abstract: A package is provided for dispensing at least two substances simultaneously in an adjacent relationship. The package includes a container having a plurality of separated storage compartments. The container has an outlet end with a peripheral outlet wall and at least one interior divider wall cooperating to define a plurality of discharge passages each communicating with a respective one of the compartments. The outlet wall has interior peripheral sealing surfaces that each define a portion of the inner periphery of a respective one of the discharge passages. Each divider wall has generally oppositely facing sealing surfaces that each define a portion of the inner periphery of a respective one of the discharge passages. A cover is provided for securement to the container over the outlet end.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1989Date of Patent: October 23, 1990Assignee: Seaquist ClosuresInventor: Bruce M. Mueller

Patent number: 4887747Abstract: A container closure is provided with a structure that permits it to be readily disassembled and assembled for use on a container defining an opening communicating with the container interior. The closure includes a body and a cover separate from the body. The cover is adapted to be pivoted about an axis between a closed position occluding a dispensing orifice in the body and at least one open position spaced away from the dispensing orifice. An axis-defining structure is provided on either the cover or the body for defining the pivot axis of the closure, and also includes a cam surface around the axis. The other one of the cover or body is provided with a receiving structure for engaging the cam surface to mount the cover to the body for pivoting about the axis. Patent number: 4487324Abstract: A dispensing package having a tamper-evident dispensing closure. A tamper-indicating removable strip is integrally formed with the closure and is secured to one of the closure body and closure cover via frangible bridging means. The closure hingedly connects the cover and body. The body defines a dispensing orifice and the cover seals the orifice. The strip defines spaces and the other one of the body and cover defines projections which extend into the spaces to resist relative movement of the body and cover unless the frangible bridging means are severed and thereby shows that access has been gained to the dispensing orifice. The closure is preferably generally circular and the tamper-indicating means are preferably within the perimeter of the closure.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1984Date of Patent: December 11, 1984Assignee: Seaquist ClosuresInventor: Efrem M.
