Fitment and resealable dispensing closure assembly for high-pressure sealing and bi-modal dispensing
Publication number: 20010052531Abstract: A fitment is provided for incorporation into a closure assembly to provide at least one high-pressure seal suitable for maintaining high-positive pressures in a container having pressurized contents, such as carbonated beverages. The fitment and closure assembly also provide for bi-modal dispensing operations, because the fitment it can be removed from the closure assembly to provide alternative flow characteristics from the container through the closure assembly. The fitment may also be provided with one or more projections adapted to engage a thread on the closure body such that rotation of the closure body relative to the container results in removal of the fitment from the container. The fitment may also be provided with one or more projections for engaging the closure body to limit its movement relative to the container, thereby defining a fully open dispensing position of the closure body.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 16, 2001Publication date: December 20, 2001Applicant: Seaquist Closures Foreign, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey T. Patent number: 6321947Abstract: In a dispensing system comprising a container having at least two storage chambers, each for a fluent material, the finishes of the respective chambers are arranged in a contiguous pair defining a cylindrical surface having outer threads, except for two anti-rotational flats. Each finish defines an outlet. A valve of a type that remains closed until opened by a differential between inside pressure and outside pressure overlies the outlet defined by each finish. A fitment defines a mixing chamber having two inlets, one for each storage chamber, and having an outlet. The fitment has two skirts, each having an inner surface having at least one rib, each defining an anti-rotational flat. The fitment fits over the paired finishes and over the valves so that the antirotational flats on the ribs engage the anti-rotational flats on the paired finishes. A collar having inner threads is threaded onto the paired finishes so as to hold the fitment, which holds the valves.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2000Date of Patent: November 27, 2001Assignee: Seaquist Closures Foreign, Inc.Inventors: Richard A. Patent number: 6283333Abstract: A toggle-action dispensing closure for a container is provided for manipulation between a closed, non-dispensing orientation and an open, dispensing orientation. The closure includes an actuator pivotally mounted along a tilting axis on a body secured to the container. The actuator is tiltable by applying force to the actuator on one side of the tilting axis so as to move the actuator from a non-dispensing position to a dispensing position. The actuator includes a striker rib extending downwardly at a position between an edge of the actuator and the tilting axis. The body includes a deck defining a dispensing aperture and supporting a post. The post extends vertically to underlie the actuator, preventing tilting of the actuator unless a sufficient opening force is exerted on the actuator to cause the striker rib to shear, or permanently deform, the post.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 2001Date of Patent: September 4, 2001Assignee: Seaquist Closures Foreign, Inc.Inventors: Michael G. Patent number: 6273307Abstract: A fitment for being sealed to a collapsible pouch has a body having at least one side wall portion, which is provided with spaced steps defining spaced shoulders, an inner end, which faces the interior of the collapsible pouch when the fitment is sealed to the collapsible pouch, and an outer end. The body of the fitment defines a reference plane and a range of peripheral dimensions, each of which is measured around one of the spaced steps or around one of the spaced shoulders, in a plane that is located at one of the inner and outer ends or between the inner and outer ends and that coincides with or is parallel to the reference plane. The peripheral dimensions increase from a smallest dimension at or toward one such end, through intermediate dimensions which between the inner and outer ends do not decrease after increasing, to a largest dimension at or toward the other end.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2000Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Seaquist Closures Foreign, Inc.Inventors: Richard A. Patent number: 6273296Abstract: A non-venting valve and dispensing package for fluid products and the like includes a container of the type having an interior volume which reduces as fluid product is dispensed from the package. A self-sealing dispensing valve has a marginal portion sealing about an associated discharge opening in the container, and a valve head with an orifice which shifts between open and closed positions in response to the application and release of pressure on and/or within the container. A vent resisting member retains the orifice in the closed position after each dispensing of fluid product from the container to prevent ambient air from being drawn back through the orifice into the container.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 2000Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: Seaquist Closures Foreign, Inc.Inventor: Paul E. Patent number: 6230940Abstract: A dispensing system is provided for being sealingly disposed with respect to, and dispensing a product from, a discharge opening of a container wherein an annular mounting flange extends radially inwardly adjacent the opening. The valve is molded from a material to define a flexible, resilient structure having a head portion and a surrounding marginal portion. The head portion has a normally closed dispensing orifice which opens when the pressure in the interior of the container exceeds the pressure on the exterior of the valve by a predetermined amount. The marginal portion is connected with the head portion and has a generally annular wall defining a generally annular groove which is open radially outwardly for receiving the mounting flange. The annular wall is sufficiently flexible to elastically deform as the wall is forced against the mounting flange to accommodate sealing of the mounting flange in the groove.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 1999Date of Patent: May 15, 2001Assignee: Seaquist Closures Foreign, Inc.Inventors: James P. Patent number: 5240155Abstract: A unitary article is provided in a form which can be reconfigured as a two-piece dispensing closure. According to the method, the unitary article is molded with frangible webs connecting a ring to a body so that the ring is axially offset from, but concentric with, the cylindrical wall of the body. Subsequently, the frangible webs are broken, and the ring is moved axially to a location concentric with the body cylindrical wall to form the assembled closure. In the assembled closure the body has a closed end and an open end suitable for mounting on a container. The cylindrical wall of the body defines a discharge passage for communicating with the container for dispensing the contents thereof. The ring defines a dispensing orifice and accommodates rotation between a dispensing position in which the passage and orifice are at least partially aligned and a closed position in which the passage is occluded by the ring.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 1992Date of Patent: August 31, 1993Assignee: Seaquist ClosuresInventors: Bruce M. Patent number: 5201440Abstract: A container closure includes a body for mounting on the container. The body defines a dispensing orifice. A flow control device, such as a lid, is disposed on the body for being moved between positions opening and closing the dispensing orifice. A tamper-indicating member is provided as a unitary extension from the lid. A first frangible web connects the member to the lid. An anchor is connected with a second frangible web to another portion of the tamper-indicating member, and the anchor is retained by the closure body. The tamper-indicating member also includes a graspable pull tab. The tab can be pulled to completely sever the frangible webs connecting the tamper-indicating member to the lid and to the anchor. This permits the lid to be opened while providing evidence of tampering with the closure.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 1991Date of Patent: April 13, 1993Assignee: Seaquist Closures, a division of Pittway CorporationInventor: Richard A.
