Abstract: A target pressure value is determined during the learning mode. Subsequent pressure values are then compared to the target value. For example, a first connection is tightened in a conventional manner, while its pressure is monitored during the learning mode. If the tightening process went well, then an operator pushes a button that tells the monitor to remember how much pressure was used on the tongs to tighten the first connection. The pressure value of that first joint then becomes the target pressure value for any subsequent joints. As additional joints are tightened, the pressure applied to the tongs is monitored and compared to the first one to ensure that all the joints are as good as the first one within an allowable tolerance.
Abstract: An automated banking machine is operative to enable users to operate the machine to carry out transactions such as the dispensing of cash. The exemplary machine provides audible instructions which are output through external loudspeakers, a headphone, or a handset. Rotation of a rotatable knob (372, 382) or other movable item causes the output of user selectable characters, transaction types and/or amounts corresponding to each respective position. The user selects the audible output produced in the current position of the knob for receipt by the machine as a transaction input by pressing on the knob. Characters and other selectable inputs corresponding to knob positions can be varied by the computer in the machine to reduce the risk of a criminal intercepting the user's inputs to the machine.

Abstract: Aspects of this invention include a downhole tool and method for making a physical caliper measurement of a subterranean borehole. The tool is configured to make the physical borehole caliper measurement only when the measured pressure in each of three or more outwardly extendable blades is greater than a predetermined threshold pressure. Blade positions are measured and the borehole caliper calculated only when the pressure in each of the blades exceeds the threshold. Exemplary embodiments of the invention enable physical caliper measurements to be made with increased accuracy with each of the blades making firm contact with the borehole wall. Methods in accordance with the invention are especially well suited for use in directional drilling applications in that they tend to enable accurate caliper measurements to be made without repositioning the steering tool in the borehole.
