Patent number: 7241296Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument has opposable seal surfaces on its jaws for grasping and sealing vessels and vascular tissue. Inner and outer instrument members allow arcuate motion of the seal surfaces. An open lockbox provides a pivot with lateral support to maintain alignment of the lateral surfaces. Ratchets on the instrument members hold a constant closure force on the tissue during the seal process. A shank portion on each member is tuned to provide an appropriate spring force to hold the seal surfaces together. During surgery, the instrument can be used to grasp and clamp vascular tissue and apply bipolar electrosurgical current through the clamped tissue. In one embodiment, the seal surfaces are partially insulated to prevent a short circuit when the instrument jaws are closed together. In another embodiment, the seal surfaces are removably mounted on the jaws.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2003Date of Patent: July 10, 2007Assignee: Sherwood Services AGInventors: Steven P. Patent number: 7240829Abstract: An ATM can accept a bulk stack of currency notes for deposit from a customer. The ATM includes a stack transporter (400) that can rotate an accepted stack while relocating it to a predetermined location inside of the machine. The stack transporter includes a rotatable housing (406) in which a stack holder (404) is movable. The stack holder can receive a currency stack (411) deposited in a fascia opening (412) by a customer. The stack holder is retracted to move the stack away from the opening and into the housing to completely move the stack into the machine. The housing, having the bulk stack therein, is then rotated to move the stack away from the opening and toward a stack processing area in the machine. The stack holder is then extended to expose a stack end out of the housing for stack processing.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 2006Date of Patent: July 10, 2007Assignee: Diebold Self-Service Systems, a division of Diebold, IncorporatedInventors: H. Publication number: 20070154569Abstract: It has been surprisingly discovered that administration of nitrite to subjects causes a reduction in blood pressure and an increase in blood flow to tissues. The effect is particularly beneficial, for example, to tissues in regions of low oxygen tension. This discovery provides useful treatments to regulate a subject's blood pressure and blood flow, for example, by the administration of nitrite salts. Provided herein are methods of administering a pharmaceutically-acceptable nitrite salt to a subject, for treating, preventing or ameliorating a condition selected from: (a) ischemia-reperfusion injury (e.g., hepatic or cardiac or brain ischemia-reperfusion injury); (b) pulmonary hypertension (e.g., neonatal pulmonary hypertension); or (c) cerebral artery vasospasm.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 9, 2004Publication date: July 5, 2007Applicants: The Govt. of the U.S.A. through The Dept. of Health and Human Services, The University of Alabama Research Foundation, Wake Forest University, Loma Linda University, The Board of Supervisors of Louisiana State UniversityInventors: Mark Gladwin, Alan Schechter, David Lefer, Rakesh Patel, Christian Hunter, Gordon Power, Daniel Kim-Shapiro, Ryszard Pluta, Edward Oldfield, Richard Cannon

Patent number: 7240368Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for increasing the security of computer networks through the use of an Intrusion and Misuse Deterrence System (IMDS) operating on the network. The IMDS is a system that creates a synthetic network complete with synthetic hosts and routers. It is comprised of a network server with associated application software that appears to be a legitimate portion of a real network to a network intruder. The IMDS consequently invites inquiry and entices the intruder away from the real network. Simulated services are configured to appear to be running on virtual clients with globally unique, class āCā IP addresses. Since there are no legitimate users of the virtual network simulated by the IMDS, all such activity must be inappropriate and can be treated as such. Consequently, the entire set of transactions by an intruder can be collected and identified rather than just those transactions that meet a predefined attack profile.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 2000Date of Patent: July 3, 2007Assignees: Verizon Corporate Services Group Inc., Level 3 Communications, Inc., BBN Technologies Corp.Inventors: Martin F.
