Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device in which a display failure is unlikely to occur even in the case of forming no alignment film. The liquid crystal display device according to the present invention includes a pair of substrates having substantially no alignment film; a liquid crystal layer which is sandwiched between the substrates and which contains a liquid crystal material; and a polymer layer which is formed on a surface of at least one of the substrates and which controls the alignment of molecules of a liquid crystal. The polymer layer is one formed by polymerizing at least one monomer contained in the liquid crystal layer. The monomer contains a compound represented by Chemical Formula (1).
Abstract: A liquid crystal driving method and a liquid crystal display apparatus that achieve a sufficiently fast response, and a sufficiently high transmittance, and reduces transmittance greatly during black image displaying. The liquid crystal driving method includes performing a driving operation to cause a potential difference between a first pair of electrodes during a subframe period, a driving operation to cause a potential difference between a second pair of electrodes, and a driving operation to cause no difference between all the electrodes of the first pairs of electrodes and the second pair of electrodes.
Abstract: A mobile station apparatus which communicates with a base station apparatus using a plurality of component carriers, transmits uplink control information to the base station apparatus using a single physical uplink control channel in a plurality of uplink component carriers, regardless of whether or not a plurality of physical uplink control channels is assigned by the base station apparatus and, when each physical uplink shared channel of the plurality of uplink component carriers including a first uplink component carrier on which the uplink control information is transmitted using the physical uplink control channel is assigned in the same subframe by the base station apparatus, transmits the uplink control information to the base station apparatus using the physical uplink shared channel of the first uplink component carrier.
Abstract: The invention provides, in one aspect, a virtual processor that includes one or more virtual processing units. These virtual processing units execute on one or more processors, and each virtual processing unit executes one or more processes or threads (collectively, “threads”). While the threads may be constrained to executing throughout their respective lifetimes on the same virtual processing units, they need not be. The invention provides, in other aspects, virtual and/or digital data processors with improved dataflow-based synchronization. A process or thread (collectively, again, “thread”) executing within such processor can execute a memory instruction (e.g., and “Empty” or other memory-consumer instruction) that permits the thread to wait on the availability of data generated, e.g., by another thread and to transparently wake up when that other thread makes the data available (e.g., by execution of a “Fill” or other memory-producer instruction).

Abstract: In at least one embodiment of the present invention, display is performed with high color reproducibility by a display device that performs area active drive. An LED output value calculating unit obtains LED data representing the luminances upon light emission of LEDs provided for respective areas, based on an input image. A display luminance calculating unit calculates a luminance image including display luminances for the respective areas, based on the LED data and a luminance spread filter.
Abstract: In a channel search performed first after the installation of a broadcast receiver, a switch is switched to each of an attenuator side and an amplifier side to acquire reception state information (AGC, BER, C/N). The broadcast receiver is provided with a counter for counting the number of receivable channels on each of the amplifier and the attenuator. If image/voice can be normally received over the corresponding channel is determined based on the reception state information from reception state information detecting means. If it is determined that image/voice can be normally received, the counter of the attenuator side or the amplifier side is incremented by one. Upon termination of the channel search, the two counters are compared and the switch is fixed to the side on which more channels can be normally received. Accordingly, a wide range of signal power levels can be received in excellent condition.

Abstract: The present invention concerns methods and reagents useful in modulating gene expression in a variety of applications, including use in therapeutic, diagnostic, target validation, and genomic discovery applications. Specifically, the invention relates to synthetic chemically modified small nucleic acid molecules, such as short interfering nucleic acid (siNA), short interfering RNA (siRNA), double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), micro-RNA (miRNA), and short hairpin RNA (shRNA) molecules capable of mediating RNA interference (RNAi) against target nucleic acid sequences. The small nucleic acid molecules are useful in the treatment of any disease or condition that responds to modulation of gene expression or activity in a cell, tissue, or organism.
Abstract: Aspects of the present invention relate to systems and methods for intra prediction. According to one aspect of the present invention, a macroblock may be partitioned into two, or more, sets of blocks. The pixel values for a block within a first set of blocks may be predicted using reconstructed values from only neighboring macroblocks. The pixel values for a block within another set of blocks may be subsequently predicted using reconstructed values from blocks in previously reconstructed sets of blocks and/or reconstructed values from neighboring macroblocks. The pixel values for blocks within a set of blocks may be predicted in parallel.

Abstract: Aspects of the present invention relate to systems and methods for locating text in a digital image. According to a first aspect of the present invention, a multi-stage filtering technique may be used to progressively refine a set of candidate text components associated with a digital image. A first, refined set of candidate text components may be formed by filtering an initial set of candidate text components based on component properties. Text lines may reconstructed from the first, refined set of candidate text components. The first, refined set of candidate text components may be further filtered based on text-line properties measured on the reconstructed text lines.
Abstract: A method and system for maintaining a high reliability logical connection between hosts employs adaptive transparent pinging, clone blocking and bandwidth leveling to realize improvements in the areas of connection status verification, security and bandwidth management. In adaptive transparent pinging, a ping interval that defines a frequency at which ping messages are transmitted from an initiating host to a receiving host to check connection status is dynamically regulated based on data indicative of the reliability of a connection. In clone blocking, the receiving host verifies that a new connection that appears redundant is a re-established connection from the initiating host rather than a cloned connection. In bandwidth leveling, data bursts pending on initiating hosts that exceed a predetermined size are scheduled for transmission to receiving hosts.
