Patent number: 5974910Abstract: An accumulator piston for an automatic transmission. The piston comprises two components, the first and second being cup elements welded together with their closed ends in abutting relation. The lower cup includes a curled back portion with a radial flange having an axially extending bi-directional oil seal thereon, and spaced apart recesses in the curled back portion to permit oil to flow therein. The upper cup includes a radial flange of reduced diameter compared to the lower cup flange. The flange also has a lip seal thereon. The piston is spring-loaded and moves up and down in a bore and counterbore in response to fluid flow on either side of the piston to absorb shifting shocks.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1997Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: SKF USA Inc.Inventors: Alex Paykin, David Dobbs

Patent number: 5955035Abstract: A method and apparatus for devulcanizing cured or cross-linked elastomers. The method includes subdividing elastomeric raw material into small particle form, confining the particles of elastomer under high force, as in a screw extruder or the like and, as the particles remain confined, imparting ultrasonic energy to the mass to effect devulcanization. Energy is fed to the confined particles transversely of the axis along which they are advancing, and energy from a source is reflected off a portion of the apparatus and back into the treatment zone so as to achieve maximum energy utilization. In particular instances, reflection of energy is achieved by providing opposed, powered ultrasonic horns that resonate in phase with each other. In another embodiment, oppositely directed, resonantly tuned horns are used, with less than all such horns being powered and the remainder being passive or unpowered reflecting horns who resonant frequency is tuned to that of the powered horn.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1997Date of Patent: September 21, 1999Assignee: SKF USA Inc.Inventors: Boris Dinzburg, Alexander Berdichevsky

Patent number: 5928676Abstract: A fluid seal including a casing unit and an elastomeric lip body portion. Frustoconical air and oil side surfaces of the lip body meet at an inner diameter portion to form a fluid seal band contacting an associated shaft in use. A continuous, circumferentially extending garter spring is embedded in the seal lip body. An axially inner surface of the lip body is defined in part by plural spaced apart ribs and the remainder is defined by pockets having portions lying closely adjacent the radially and axially innermost portions of the garter spring. In the free state of said seal, the garter spring exerts a radially inwardly directed preload force so as to resist radial expansion of said seal. The spring also resists dimensional shrinkage of the seal band and the remainder of the seal body.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: SKF USA Inc.Inventor: David A. Patent number: 5495772Abstract: A method and apparatus for rapidly determining the cure state of an annular rubber or elastomeric article is provided. The article is placed so that an inner hole portion fits over separable parts of a test fixture, and tension is induced in a stepwise manner by moving the separable parts apart in discrete incremental steps. The tension is allowed to relax between the steps. By generating a force/deflection curve in this way, the user may optimize the cure state of the tested articles by controlling the cure time and temperature of a manufacturing process in response to the measured data.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1994Date of Patent: March 5, 1996Assignee: SKF USA Inc.Inventors: Boris Dinzburg, Jone Deng
