  • Patent number: 4027718
Abstract: An improved reinforcing material for concrete is manufactured by causing molten steel to impinge upon a relatively cold metal surface of great cooling capacity, moving rapidly substantially across the direction of delivery of the molten steel, to form at least one discrete relatively thin flake-shaped layer of molten steel on the metal surface, causing the layer to solidify on said metal surface to form a steel flake, and mutually adjusting the parameters which determine the shape and the dimensions of the steel flakes so as to give the flakes a shape tapering towards the ends of the flake and a thickness of about 0.1 mm to about 0.5 mm, a maximum width of at least about ten times the thickness but at least about 2 mm, and a length of at least about 100 times the thickness.

  • Patent number: 4007974
Abstract: A sliding thrust bearing has one bearing surface separated into a plurality of regions, each of which has a slot extending radially from the circumferential edge thereof. A plurality of grooves extends from each of the opposite sides of the slot, the grooves extending from opposite sides of the slot being inclined in opposite directions with respect to the circumferential direction of the bearing surface. A further bearing surface engages the grooved surface, whereby pressure of a lubricant builds up in the groove to one side of the slot for one direction of relative rotation of the bearing surfaces, and pressure of the lubricant builds up in a groove to the other side of the slot for the opposite direction of relative rotation of the bearing surfaces. The bearing surfaces may be flat or curved.

  • Patent number: 4007975
Abstract: An articulated bearing has an inner ring with a spherical outer surface, and an outer ring with a hollow spherical inner surface corresponding to and engaging the outer surface of the inner ring. Plastic bearing segments are circumferentially arranged in the cylindrical bore of the inner ring. The plastic segments are held by rings having inclined ends engaging the ends of the plastic segments. Circumferential displacement of the segments is prevented by strips affixed in the bore of the inner ring between adjacent segments. The plastic segments extend radially inwardly of the holding rings and strips a distance, in the absence of loading of the bearing, corresponding to the elastic deformation of the segments in the loaded condition. A pin in one of the inner and outer rings is urged into a recess in the other of the inner and outer rings, by means of a spring.

  • Patent number: 4004537
Abstract: A manual steering wheel or the like is connected through a rotatable flexible cable and a double-acting free wheeling clutch to a rotatable element controlling the position of a steering member such as a boat's rudder. A servo motor is also connected through the clutch to the rotatable element, and starting, stopping, and the direction of operation of the motor are controlled by electric pole changing spring contacts associated with the wheel. The connection of the steering wheel to the rotatable element is directly through the free wheel element of the clutch, while the servo motor is connected to the rotatable element through the other rotary element of the clutch. This permits the servo motor normally to drive the rudder in response to steering wheel motion, but direct manual steering is enabled should the servo motor operate too slowly or not at all.
