  • Patent number: 11482975
Abstract: Power amplifiers with adaptive bias for envelope tracking applications are provided herein. In certain embodiments, an envelope tracking system includes a power amplifier that amplifies a radio frequency (RF) signal and that receives power from a power amplifier supply voltage, and an envelope tracker that generates the power amplifier supply voltage based on an envelope of the RF signal. The power amplifier includes a field-effect transistor (FET) for amplifying the RF signal, and a current mirror including an input that receives a reference current and an output connected to the power amplifier supply voltage. An internal voltage of the current mirror is used to bias the gate of the FET to compensate the FET for changes in the power amplifier supply voltage arising from envelope tracking.

  • Patent number: 11476819
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods for use in operating signal amplifiers that provide impedance adjustments for different gain modes. The impedance adjustments are configured to result in a constant real impedance for an input signal at the amplifier. Some of the disclosed methods adjust impedance using switchable inductors to compensate for changes in impedance with changing gain modes. Some of the disclosed methods adjust a device size to compensate for changes in impedance with changing gain modes. By providing impedance adjustments, the amplifiers reduce losses and improve performance by improving impedance matching over a range of gain modes.

  • Patent number: 11476806
Abstract: A power management integrated circuit (PMIC) can improve the ramp up speed of a boost converter with the inclusion of a controllable switch that may modify the connection of an output capacitor to reduce the ramp time as the output voltage is ramping to a desired boost setpoint. The switch may be controlled using jump start logic to switch a first plate or terminal of the output capacitor from a ground connection to a voltage supply connection. Once a threshold voltage is reached, the first plate of the capacitor may be switched from the supply voltage to ground. In certain cases, by switching the connection of the output capacitor between ground and a supply voltage based on one or more threshold voltages or a boost setpoint, the time to ramp from an initial voltage to a desired boost setpoint may be reduced.

  • Patent number: 11469714
Abstract: Embodiments described herein relate to an envelope tracking system that uses a single-bit digital signal to encode an analog envelope tracking control signal, or envelope tracking signal for brevity. In certain embodiments, the envelope tracking system can estimate or measure the amplitude of the baseband signal. The envelope tracking system can further estimate the amplitude of the envelope of the RF signal. The system can convert the amplitude of the envelope signal to a single-bit digital signal, typically at a higher, oversample rate. The single-bit digital signal can be transmitted in, for example, a low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) format, from a transceiver to an envelope tracker. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC or A/D) can convert the single-bit digital signal back to an analog envelope signal. Moreover, a driver can increase the power of the A/D output envelope signal to produce an envelope-tracking supply voltage for a power amplifier.

  • Patent number: 11445445
Abstract: A wireless device is disclosed that can support carrier aggregation uplink (“CAUL”) communication using a single wideband coupler. A single wideband coupler that can operate or support some or all of the communication bands of the wireless device can be used in conjunction with one or more diplexers and/or filters to measure the power of individual communication bands involved in the transmission process. Further, the use of a wideband coupler and switching network to measure the transmit power from the one or more transmit paths or main paths of a wireless device can reduce the size of a transceiver and reduce the insertion loss attributed to the power measurement components compared to systems that use separate measurement systems for each transmit path. The power measurement system may occur in a separate path in electrical connection with the wideband coupler, which may therefore be termed a coupler path.
