Publication number: 20100089202Abstract: During the production of stainless steel, a slag is formed during the melting of the solid material in the electric arc furnace, the slag having a high degree of metal oxides, particularly chromium oxide. The chromium concentration often reaches values of more than 30%. Currently, such slags cannot be reduced to a desired degree due to their composition. In order to minimize the resulting high loss of recyclable material, the invention provides to charge the electric arc furnace with pellets, or briquettes (8), which are made of a defined mixture of an iron carrier as the ballast material, carbon, or carbon and silicon, as the reducing agent, and a binder, wherein they react beneath the slag layer (7) in the steel melt (6) with the metal oxides of the slag (7), particularly with the chromium oxide present, in a floating, chemical, and reducing manner. The reaction gases (12) produced in the process, which are mainly made of carbon monoxide, advantageously support a foaming of the slag (7).Type: ApplicationFiled: January 10, 2008Publication date: April 15, 2010Applicant: SMS SIEMAG AKTIENGESELLSCHAFTInventors: Johann Reichel, Lutz Rose

Publication number: 20100064856Abstract: A process for producing steel and for obtaining slag having a high content of additional elements such as vanadium in a two-step process. Liquid pig iron is initially blown onto a high-grade slag at a lower temperature, the slag being further processed separately after tapping, while the pig iron is supplied to at least one additional converter in which it is blown at a higher temperature to form steel. A high-grade slag is generated while shortening the steel production process using the process in that the intermediate metal product that is tapped from the first converter is subjected to a heating and/or holding phase before being supplied to the second converter.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 10, 2007Publication date: March 18, 2010Applicant: SMS Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Guido Kleinschmidt, Jochen Schlueter, Walter Weischedel, Udo Falkenreck

Patent number: 7669447Abstract: The invention relates to a method for cold-rolling strips consisting of, inter alia, special steels and/or nonferrous metals, in a multi-stand tandem rolling mill. The first stand(s) carry out comparatively high reductions and the last stand(s) determine the surface quality of the strip, with a relatively low reduction. The aim of the invention is to improve the capacity of the tandem rolling mill in terms of thickness reduction and in terms of the surface quality of the rolled strips. To this end, an emulsion is used as a coolant and lubricant for the first passages of the strip through the tandem rolling mill with relatively high reduction. The adhesive coolant and lubricant film is then squeezed off the strip following removal from the roll gap of the last emulsion-operated stand. Rolling oil is used as a lubricant for especially the last passage(s) through the tandem rolling mill with relatively low reduction. The invention also relates to an installation for carrying out the inventive method.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2002Date of Patent: March 2, 2010Assignee: SMS Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Rolf Bünten, Rainer Effertz

Patent number: 7662438Abstract: The invention relates to a method for hot-dip coating a metal strand (1), especially a steel strip, according to which the metal strand (1) is vertically guided through a container (3) accommodating the molten coating metal (2) and through a guide channel (4) disposed upstream thereof. An electromagnetic field is generated in the area of the guide channel (4) by means of at least two inductors (5) disposed at both sides of the metal strand (1) to retain the coating material (2) in the container (3). In order to stabilize the metal strand (1) in a center position in the guide channel (4), an electromagnetic field, superimposing the electromagnetic field of the inductors (5), is generated by means of at least two additional coils (6) disposed at both sides of the metal strand (1).Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 2003Date of Patent: February 16, 2010Assignee: SMS Siemag AktiengesellschaftInventors: Rolf Brisberger, Bernhard Tenckhoff, Holger Behrens, Bodo Falkenhahn, Walter Trakowski, Michael Zielenbach, Robert Jürgens
