  • Patent number: 8972548
Abstract: Systems and methods of the present invention for maintaining network data distribution are provided. Network data may be distributed in such as manner as to allow a network session to weather interrupted communications between host and clients without significant loss of data. Embodiments of the present invention provide for one or more clients to serve as backup host(s) for the network session. When the other clients transmit data to the host, they may also transmit the data to one or more backup hosts if there are any indications of interrupted communication.

  • Patent number: 8961313
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed to control interactivity with a video gaming system. The system includes a game console and a controller that is configured to be held in a plurality of handhold orientations. The controller further includes a handle that extends between a first end and a second end along a length axis and an input feature disposed at the first end. The input feature includes sensors to detect manipulations that cause a relative movement between the input feature and the handle. The manipulations that are detected include torque applied to the input feature about the length axis. Where the detected manipulation are relayed to the game console where the game console correlates the detected manipulation into control of the video game. The gaming system can be primarily executed through a local game console, or the game console (or computing device), can communicate to remote servers, over the internet, to processes primary execution.

  • Patent number: 8956232
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are presented for automatically creating a special chat or common video game environment forum and inviting online video game players to the forum based on their common demographics. The determination of common demographics can be generated through clustering algorithms. Players in the same city, players with the same playing techniques, and/or players sharing other common attributes can play as teams or against each other. As players drop out of the forum, the criteria for invitations to the forum are expanded to include other online players.

  • Patent number: 8953029
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer programs for wireless interaction with a portable device supported by a stand are presented. In one method operation, a communications link is established between the portable device and the stand. The stand tracks the motion of an input device within an interactivity zone. In another method operation, the portable device interfaces with the input device to generate actions associated with game objects in the portable device, where the interface takes place when the input device is in or near the interactivity zone. Additionally, the stand moves when the tracking detects that the input device is outside predefined boundaries near an edge of the interactivity zone. The stand movement information is transferred via the communications link to update the location of the interactivity zone.

  • Patent number: 8951120
Abstract: Systems and methods for calibration and biasing are described herein. In one example, a method for determining a playing height of a user is described. The method includes receiving an identification of a first corner of a display screen from the user by associating a first position of a tracked object with the first corner using image data from a capture device, receiving an identification of a second corner of the display screen from the user by associating a second position of the tracked object with the second corner using image data from the capture device, and triangulating between the first and second corners and the tracked object to define a range of movement made by the user. The tracked object is held by the user. The method further includes defining a height at which the tracked object is held by the user based on the range of movement.

  • Patent number: 8954356
Abstract: A user interface evolves based on learned idiosyncrasies and collected data of a user. Learned idiosyncrasies and collected data of the user can be stored in a knowledge base. Information from the surrounding environment of the user can be obtained during learning of idiosyncrasies or collection of data. Thought-based statements can be generated based at least in part on the knowledge base and the information from the environment surrounding the user during learning of idiosyncrasies or collection of data. The thought-based statements serve to invoke or respond to subsequent actions of the user. The user interface can be presented so as to allow for interaction with the user based at least in part on the thought-based statements. Furthermore, personality nuances of the user interface can be developed that affect the interaction between the user and the user interface.

  • Patent number: 8926435
Abstract: A computing system is configured to execute a computer program on a server and to provide a video stream of the program output to a geographically remote client over a communication network. The computing system is further configured to provide executable content of the computer program to the client over the communication network in parallel with the video stream. When a sufficient amount of the executable content has been provided to the client execution of the computer program is transitioned from the server to the client. The transition optionally includes communicating a state of the computer program from the server to the client. The executable content can be provided to the client in an order that is determined based on the state of the computer program. Those parts of the executable content deemed most likely to be necessary to support game play on the client are given priority.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer programs for delivering supplemental content within streamed media are provided. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving a request at a client for a media segment, which includes a plurality of video frames. Further, a stream of the media segment to the client from a media server is obtained and supplemental content (SC) is accessed from storage in the client or from an SC server. The access of the SC from the SC server can be performed before receiving the request, or while obtaining the stream, or after the stream has been obtained. Further, the method includes combining the media segment with the SC at the client, which inserts the SC to add or augment video frames from the media segment. The combination is then displayed to the user.

  • Patent number: 8902227
Abstract: A method for interactively defining a virtual-world space based on real-world objects in a real-world space is disclosed. In one operation, one or more real-world objects in the real-world space is captured to define the virtual-world space. In another operation, one of the real-world objects is identified, the identified object is to be characterized into a virtual-world object. In yet another operation, a user is prompted for user identification of one or more object locations to enable extraction of parameters for real-world object, and the object locations are identified relative to an identifiable reference plane in the real-world space. In another operation, the extracted parameters of the real-world object may be stored in memory. The virtual-world object can then be generated in the virtual world space from the stored extracted parameters of the real-world object.

  • Patent number: 8888592
Abstract: A video server is configured to provide streaming video to players of computer games over a computing network. The video server can provided video of different games to different players simultaneously. This is accomplished by rendering several video streams in parallel using a single GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). The output of the GPU is provided to graphics processing pipelines that are each associated with a specific client/player and are dynamically allocated as needed. A client qualifier may be used to assure that only clients capable of presenting the streaming video to a player at a minimum level of quality receive the video stream. Video frames provided by the video server optionally include overlays added to the output of the GPU. These overlays can include voice data received from another game player.

  • Patent number: 8886752
Abstract: A system and method for optimizing transfers of downloadable content is described. Embodiments of the invention begin to execute downloadable content before the content is downloaded in full, providing users with faster access to the content. In addition, embodiments disclosed herein reduce bandwidth usage, are less sensitive to consumer internet speed, and are not limited by end-user product storage size. The embodiments are dynamic, thus expanding application of the system and method to both static and interactive content. The disclosed embodiments can be implemented with a patch or driver on the operating system of the user device, rendering it unnecessary to heavily modify the source code of the content. Disclosed embodiments can also operate independent from and/or invisible to the executing content, minimizing the amount of errors observed by a user when the content is displayed.
