  • Patent number: 11760783
Abstract: Described herein is a novel, mitochondrial encoded, open reading frame, that leads to the production of a new mitochondrial peptide. Residing within the ND-Two subunit, a specific small nucleotide polymorphism disrupts expression of this mitochondrial peptide, and is correlated with an increase in obesity and diabetes, particularly in certain ethnic populations. In vitro administration of the peptide increases insulin secretion, decreases fat accumulation and improves glucose uptake in muscle cell. Antibodies generated against the peptide can be used for detecting peptide deficiency, in addition to SNP detection, supporting diagnostic approaches. In vivo studies further revealed that administration of the peptide improves glucose tolerance, thereby providing a new therapeutic avenue for a novel diabetes therapy and decreases bodyweight, thus serving as a novel obesity therapy. Generation of synthetic analogs further enhance or abrogated activity relative to the natural peptide.

  • Patent number: 11758203
Abstract: Devices, computer-readable media, and methods for making a cache admission decision regarding a video chunk are described. For instance, a processing system including at least one processor may obtain a request for a first chunk of a first video, determine that the first chunk is not stored in a cache, and apply, in response to the determining that the first chunk is not stored in the cache, a classifier to predict whether the first chunk will be re-requested within a time horizon, where the classifier is trained in accordance with a set of features associated with a plurality of chunks of a plurality of videos. When it is predicted via the classifier that the first chunk will be re-requested within the time horizon, the processing system may store the first chunk in the cache.

  • Publication number: 20230250379
Abstract: Zebrafish are a powerful model for investigating cardiac repair due to their unique regenerative abilities, scalability, and compatibility with many genetic tools. However, characterizing the regeneration process in live adult zebrafish hearts has proved challenging because adult fish are opaque and explanted hearts in conventional culture conditions experience rapid declines in morphology and physiology. To overcome these limitations, we fabricated a fluidic device for culturing explanted adult zebrafish hearts with constant media perfusion that is also compatible with live imaging. Unlike hearts cultured in dishes for one week, the morphology and calcium activity of hearts cultured in the device for one week were largely similar to freshly explanted hearts.

  • Publication number: 20230242477
Abstract: For methane activation, various sulfonation systems using SO3 or H2SO4 have been well studied, however, sulfur dioxide (SO2), a preliminary source of SO3 and H2SO4, has not been used successfully. Herein, we report a novel methane sulfonation method to produce methanesulfonic acid (MSA) utilizing sulfur dioxide by a free radical mechanism. In the presence of H2O2 as a radical initiator, the reaction of SO2 and O2 in trifluoroacetic acid (TFAOH) furnished trifluoroacetylsulfuric acid (TFAOSO3H), which served as the radical propagator to facilitate H-abstraction of methane at low temperatures. In typical reactions, sulfur dioxide was incorporated into MSA in 75% with high selectivity at 60° C.

  • Patent number: 11711254
Abstract: This disclosure presents distributed and decentralized synchronization for wireless transceivers. The disclosed system, device, and method achieve sub-nanosecond synchronization using low-cost commercial off the shelf software defined radios. By providing a decentralized mechanism that does not rely on a hierarchical master-slave structure, networks constructed as disclosed are robust to sensor drop-out in contested or harsh environments. Such networks may be used to create phased array radars and communication systems without requiring wired connections to distribute a common clock or local oscillator reference.

  • Patent number: 11707884
Abstract: A sliding window is used in a projection-based stereolithographic process to more quickly deliver uncured resin after each curing pass. The sliding window may be configured in different patterns, and includes features for delivering resin and exposing resin to curing radiation. The window screen divides the stereolithographic building area divided into two portions, a light exposure portion for resin curing and a liquid resin refilling portion. The light exposure portion is used to selectively solidify liquid resin, while the liquid resin refilling portion is used to quickly refill liquid resin in order to build additional layers. During the layer fabrication process, a mask image is projected to the tank; however, the projection light only passes through the light exposure portion of the window screen.

  • Patent number: 11701346
Abstract: To identify novel agents to treat carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. the Inventors used a nutrient-depleted medium with serum to mimic the in vivo environment. In RPMI with serum, the screen identified rifabutin (RBT) as being 133-fold more potent than rifampin (RIF) against A. baumannii, with MICs of 0.031 ?g/ml and 4 ?g/ml respectively. No difference in RBT vs. RIF activity was observed when MHII was used as the culture media. RBT possesses markedly superior in efficacy to RIF in murine models of lethal iv and pneumonia models of infection with a hyper-virulent, clinical lung and blood isolate of extreme-drug resistant (XDR) A. baumannii. In both models, RBT significantly improved survival and lowered bacterial burden compared to RIF. RBT is a promising, novel therapeutic option for A. baumannii infections.
