  • Patent number: 4171115
Abstract: The outputs of a pair of linear accelerometers are utilized to provide measures of craft vertical acceleration and body axis pitch angular acceleration. The pitch angular acceleration signal is integrated to provide a measure of body axis pitch rate. The pitch rate signal is in turn integrated to provide a measure of body axis pitch attitude. An earth referenced pitch attitude sensor provides a measure of earth referenced pitch attitude and through a rate taker a measure of earth referenced pitch rate. The earth referenced sensor is utilized to calibrate out errors and effectively align the linear accelerometers so that in the event of a loss of the earth referenced sensor, the calibrated accelerometers have adequate accuracy to compute pitch rate and pitch attitude within the long period bandwidth needed to provide the stability augmentation function for a relaxed static stability aircraft.

  • Patent number: 4169264
Abstract: An air traffic control transponder includes a synchronous digital delay line decoder for providing mode selection signals in response to pulse space coded transmissions from the ground station. The decoder comprises a shift register delay line having a plurality of delay taps along which a first received pulse is shifted. A continuously running high frequency clock pulse generator via a frequency divider provides the shifting clock to the delay line. The first received pulse synchronizes the shifting clock via the frequency divider. A plurality of monostable multivibrators connected to selected taps of the delay line provide pulse detection windows in response to the first received pulse being shifted through the stages of the shift register to which the window generating monostable multivibrators are connected. The outputs from the window generators are applied as inputs to respective pulse coincidence detection devices, the second inputs thereof being connected to receive the incoming pulses.

  • Patent number: 4168107
Abstract: Disclosed is a solid state apparatus for and a method of (1) modulating the intensity of a multimode light beam; (2) coupling the light beam to an input optic fiber that is butt coupled to a diffraction grating that is formed of a plurality of stripe domains in a magnetic film; (3) altering, by the application of suitable magnetic fields, the angular orientation of the stripe domains in the plane of the magnetic film, and (4) multiplexing the diffracted light beam to a selected one of a plurality of several output optic fibers. The apparatus uses a liquid-phase epitaxially (LPE) grown film of bismuth substituted rare earth iron garnet to form a magnetizable layer in which stripe domains may be generated, sustained and moved about. The stripe domains form a diffraction grating. The angular orientation of the stripe domains in the plane of the diffraction grating may be altered by the application of external magnetic fields.

  • Patent number: 4167296
Abstract: A protective control system is provided in a magnetic suspension system having a permanent magnetic and an electro-magnetic circuit for levitating a spinning rotor; normally effective axial stability between limiting positions is provided by a feed back servo system supplying control currents to a pair of solenoids for modulating the permanent magnetic field in the suspension gaps. The physical support system and the suspended apparatus are protected from damage due to excessive axial oscillatory translation of the suspended rotor by detection of such non-linear events and by the removal of the suspension command for a suitable time period. The suspension control is then returned to its initial state and is again set into operation to translate the suspended element asymptotically and smoothly to its desired central location.

  • Patent number: 4164022
Abstract: Electronic digital apparatus for computing an approximation of the arctangent of a given tangent number, N, being in the range of 0 to 1 and in binary form, operates in two stages to provide a solution of the expression: ##EQU1## During the first stage, steps are taken by the apparatus to find out where within the range of 0 to 1, divided preferably into four equal increments, the known tangent number N is located. When the correct increment represented by one of a plurality of increment numbers I.sub.j stored in a ROM unit of the apparatus is found, then one of a like plurality of center numbers C.sub.k of that increment also stored in the ROM unit may be readily selected, as can also be the corresponding one of a plurality of stored numbers A.sub.i representing the arctangents of the stored center numbers C.sub.k. During the first stage, the product number C.sub.k (N) is also formed. In the second stage of operation of the apparatus, the dividend and divisor numbers N-C.sub.k and 1+C.sub.

  • Patent number: 4163147
Abstract: An improvement to a semiconductor memory subsystem containing single bit error correction/double bit error detection (SBC/DBD) which provides correction of double bit errors through the utilization of a modest amount of additional circuitry. The present invention accomplishes this result through the technique of sequentially complementing each double bit pair within the semiconductor memory subsystem data word determined to contain a multiple error and rechecking the modified data word with the existing SBC/DBD circuitry, one double bit pair at a time, until it is determined by the SBC/DBD circuitry that such double bit pair complementing has corrected the double bit error.

  • Patent number: 4162438
Abstract: The servomotor outputs of two substantially identical servo channels, are connected through a differential mechanism to position an attitude control surface of an aircraft in response to common or separate, normally identical, command signals applied to the respective channels. Position and rate feedback means responsive to the movement of the control surface and each servomotor provides position and rate feedback signals to their respective channels. The primary position rate feedback term for each servomotor channel is derived from the position feedback means rather than from a servo tachometer to increase the stiffness of the output in resisting the motions commanded by a failed servo channel and to improve fault detection capability by increasing the difference velocity between a good and a failed channel.
