  • Patent number: 4161097
Abstract: A knotter mechanism, primarily for use in crop baling machines, with an improved billhook and actuation means therefor is disclosed. The billhook is rotatably mounted on the knotter frame and includes a fixed jaw having an elongate shaft and a movable jaw with an integral heel portion is pivotally fixed to the fixed jaw whereby pivotable of the moveable jaw opens and closes the billhook. An actuation means in the form of a rotatable roller is mounted on the knotter frame adjacent the billhook on an axis of rotation perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the fixed jaw shaft. As the billhook rotates, the heel portion of the moveable jaw periodically engages the roller, resulting in selective opening and closing of the billhook.

  • Patent number: 4161789
Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for reading out the information that is stored in a magnetizable layer that is formed of a thin film in which data are stored as inverted Neel wall sections about associated Bloch-lines along a cross-tie wall. The apparatus utilizes a magnetizable layer which is configured into a strip whose two opposing edges are, along its longitudinal axis, formed into mirror-imaged, spaced-apart, repetitive, asymmetrically-shaped patterns which repetitive patterns are formed of successive narrow portions that form wide portions therebetween. The repetitive patterns, when suitable magnetic fields are coupled thereto, form a cross-tie wall along the longitudinal axis of the strip while structuring the cross-ties along the cross-tie wall at the narrow portions and the Bloch-lines along the cross-tie walls and between the adjacent narrow portions.

  • Patent number: 4160970
Abstract: A system is disclosed for transmitting information during a borehole drilling operation wherein a section of the drill string near the drill bit is utilized as a transmitting element of an electromagnetic wave propagation system. A receiving system at the surface uses a section of the drill string as one electrode and a metallic ring or ring of probes which penetrate the earth's surface at a given radius from the drill string as another electrode between which signal voltages are detected. In another embodiment, the receiving system comprises metallic rods at the surface which extend radially from the drill string. Signal currents induced in these radially extending rods are detected by a receiver coupled between the rods and the drill string.

  • Patent number: 4160251
Abstract: An improved high frequency radiometric system features time shared passive and active modes of operation for correlation of active and passive signal returns. The processed, normalized, and stored passive signals are subtracted from similarly treated active signals to suppress the effect of returns from back ground terrain, thus enhancing true target recognition. A second channel provides discrimination against jamming and spurious signals, thus reducing false alarms.

  • Patent number: 4160245
Abstract: In an illustrative embodiment of the invention, an angular digital-to-resolver data converter apparatus is provided for converting a digital input signal representative of angular data into digital pseudo sine and cosine output signals representative of the angular data, which when converted into analog signals may be used to provide excitation to analog servo system resolvers. The digital or binary output signals which approximate the sine and cosine function of the digital angular data input signal are related such that the ratio of the digital output signal representative of the pseudo sine function to the digital output signal representative of the pseudo cosine function equals the true tangent of the actual angle.

  • Patent number: 4159615
Abstract: Apparatus in a crop roll forming machine for improving the core formation of the crop rolls, reducing the amount of particles of crop material lost, and collecting particles of crop material lost from either the crop package or loose crop material during the roll formation process comprising stripping surfaces and an elongated tailgate with a collection pan. The particles are recycled from the collection pan back into the roll forming region by the cooperative interaction of the tailgate collection pan and the upper bale forming means as the bale forming means traverses a predetermined path imparting rotative motion to the crop material delivered to the roll forming region.

  • Patent number: 4160237
Abstract: The polarization of a scanning laser beam is made to oscillate at a relatively high frequency between orthogonal polarization states while being raster scanned across a multiple line pattern at a lower rate. A birefringent element in the optical path causes the two polarization states cyclically to produce light spots of two different sizes at each illuminated point of the image. This difference in spot size produces an oscillating change in the scattered light power when the grey level illuminated by the smaller spot differs from the average grey level of the surrounding area. The polarity of the detected scattered light signal relative to the polarity of the voltage producing the oscillating polarization state is used to classify the surveyed points in the image into a pattern of binary coded numbers which are readily stored or otherwise processed for pattern recognition purposes.

  • Patent number: 4159444
Abstract: The dual electromechanical servo actuator comprises two electric servo motors coupled through differential gearing to position an output member in accordance with an input signal. Tachometer generators coupled to the respective output shafts of the servo motors, (and normally integral with the motors) provide rate feedback signals to the respective inputs of the servo amplifiers driving the respective motors. An electronic model of the dual servo actuators responsive to the input signal provides a rate signal simulating the tachometer responses to the input signal. A monitor compares the two tachometer signals and provides a failure signal when the difference therebetween exceeds a predetermined threshold. The monitor also simultaneously compares the model rate ouptut with the individual tachometer signals to determine which of the two servo channels has failed. The monitor circuits apply a brake to the servo motor output shaft of the failed channel.

  • Patent number: 4156555
Abstract: An apparatus and method is disclosed for utilizing a low power light source in conjunction with a continuously scanned light beam deflector to form unblurred images of a vocabulary of characters at a plurality of discrete positions. The light source illuminates a scanning deflector from which an angularly scanned beam is directed towards a lens, from which it emerges as a linearly scanned beam. This linearly scanned beam illuminates a linear fly's eye lens array from which a plurality of substantially stationary beams are emitted, each of which may provide an unblurred image at a preselected position corresponding thereto.

  • Patent number: 4156288
Abstract: A data source is connected through a gating circuit to all stages of an asynchronous shift register. The gating circuit senses the full or empty status of each stage of the shift register and enters an incoming bit of data into that stage of the shift register which is the empty stage nearest the output, and has no stage preceding it which is full. The arrangement decreases the delay time normally encountered by data as it is shifted through the shift register, the decrease in delay time being related to the number of empty stages in the register at the time a bit of data is entered.

  • Patent number: 4155119
Abstract: A method of addressing memory in a digital computer where a plurality of devices are connected to a single input/output channel to the digital computer communicate with the digital computer by externally specifying the memory address of the data word or words to be transferred to or from the digital computer. More specifically, the invention provides a method for treating the externally specified address coming from one of the multiple devices external to the digital computer as a virtual address. Thus, an input/output process operating in the digital computer may operate within the digital computer's system virtual address space. This method allows input/output processes to be able to utilize the address mapping subsystem of the central processor of the digital computer. The method of memory addressing utilizes a subchannel page table for each one of the multiple devices connected to one input/output channel in addition to a channel page table utilized for each individual input/output channel.
