  • Publication number: 20140133461
Abstract: A method and apparatus for handing off packet-transmission between sectors of a wireless communication system is disclosed herein. During transmission of a packet from an access network to an access terminal, the access terminal determines that the packet should theoretically be transmitted to the access terminal in fewer timeslots in another sector than the number of allowed timeslots remaining for the packet transmission in a current sector. In response, the access terminal abandons packet transmission in the current sector and hands off to the other sector, in an effort to increase throughput and save air interface resources.

  • Patent number: 8718627
Abstract: A primary mobile station engaged in a communication session via a radio access network (RAN) may receive forward link communications over a forward link channel and transmit reverse link communications over a reverse link channel. If the quality of the communication session degrades, the primary mobile station may involve a secondary mobile station by establishing a short-range wireless communication link with the secondary mobile station, e.g., using Bluetoothâ„¢, IEEE 802.11, or other wireless communication protocol. The primary mobile station may then transmit reverse link communications to the RAN over the reverse link channel and also transmit the reverse link communications to the secondary mobile station, via the short-range wireless communication link, for transmission to the RAN. The RAN may receive the reverse link communications from the primary and secondary mobile stations as two distinct reverse link signals, which the RAN may combine together to achieve a diversity gain.

  • Publication number: 20140120908
Abstract: In one aspect, an exemplary method involves a WCD: (i) determining a likelihood of roaming, wherein the likelihood of roaming indicates a likelihood that the WCD will be handed off from a preferred coverage area to a non-preferred coverage area; and (ii) using the likelihood of roaming as a basis for managing an active set of the WCD. In particular, the WCD may manage its active set by setting at least one active-set parameter affecting the number of active sectors in an active set of the WCD, and then maintaining its active set according to the setting of the at least one active-set parameter. According to an exemplary embodiment, a WCD will make an effort to increase the number of sectors in its active set when the likelihood of roaming is greater, and vice versa.

  • Patent number: 8713191
Abstract: A method and apparatus for establishing a media clip for such uses as a ring tone at a client station and a ring-back tone by a cellular wireless network. A client station receives streaming media from a network system. During presentation of the streaming media at the client station, the client station receives user input identifying a first portion of the streaming media as a media clip start point (MCSP) and a second portion of the streaming media as a media clip end point (MCEP). The client station establishes a message indicating the identified MCSP and MCEP and transmits the message to the network system. In response to receiving the message, the network system establishes a media clip defined as a portion of the streaming media extending from the MCSP to the MCEP. The network system may transmit the media clip to the client station and/or the cellular wireless network.

  • Patent number: 8712026
Abstract: Methods and systems for facilitating distribution of ringback files to caller devices are provided. A ringback file server may receive a request to associate a ringback file with a callee device and a caller device. Responsively, the ringback file server transmits a copy of the ringback file to the caller device, thus enabling the caller device to play out the ringback file when the caller device subsequently initiates a call to the callee device. Preferably, the ringback file is a high quality audio or video file. Thus, locally storing the ringback file at the caller device facilitates playout of high quality ringback media and also avoids requiring that the ringback file server stream ringback media in-band to the caller device.

  • Patent number: 8712778
Abstract: A method and system for identifying, saving and utilizing bookmarks in a voice-command platform. The system allows a user to bookmark objects specified within voice-markup filed resulting in the ability to directly recall the object rather than the voice-markup file as a whole. The system of the invention also provides a user of the voice command platform with a list of proposed bookmark names that are appropriate for the object. Once a user selects a bookmark, the platform may determine that a voice command is a bookmark command, such as a request to save a given voice command navigation point in a centralized list of bookmarks for the user, or to recall a navigation point from the user's centralized list, and the platform may respond to the bookmark command accordingly. The system improves accuracy in the use of bookmarks by proposing bookmark names for a given navigation point that avoid confusion with established grammars.

  • Patent number: 8712384
Abstract: Methods and systems for triggering the delivery of a message waiting indicator (MWI) are introduced. In a wireless communication network, a radio access network (RAN) determines that a wireless communication device (WCD), such as a mobile phone, has missed an incoming call, and responsively: (i) routes the incoming call to a message storage system to enable an originator of the call to leave a message for a user of the WCD, (ii) waits a period of time after routing the incoming call to the message storage system, and (iii) then generates and transmits a message waiting query to the message storage system without prompting from the WCD. In response to the message waiting query, the message storage system may transmit a signal indicative of the message to the RAN. Responsively, the RAN may then transmit to the WCD a message waiting indication (MWI) indicative of the message, for presentation of the MWI to the user of the WCD.
