Patent number: 8880087Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for maintaining codec consistency across a communication session. When a communication session is set up for an access terminal (AT) operating in a wireless communication system, a network device, such a base station, can determine a coding rate to assign the AT for its air interface in a manner that accounts for network capacity variations spatially and/or temporally across the session. If the requested communication session is determined to be with a landline device, then a higher coding rate may be used than might otherwise be selected. If the requested session is with another AT, then a coding rate that best accommodates the air interfaces of both ATs may be used. If the AT is predicted to handoff to multiple sectors during the session, then a coding rate that best accommodates the air interfaces of all the predicted handoff sectors may be used.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2012Date of Patent: November 4, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Sachin R. Patent number: 8874104Abstract: A method and corresponding system for use of a femtocell in a vehicle (an “in-vehicle femtocell”) to help limit operation of a wireless communication device (WCD) positioned in the vehicle. In one implementation, registration (or registration attempts) of one or more WCDs with an in-vehicle femtocell may be used as a basis to trigger limitations on certain WCD functions in a vehicle, such as to prevent a WCD from providing text-messaging service for instance. In another implementation, a WCD may receive a signal from an in-vehicle femtocell and in response to the signal, the WCD may register with the femtocell to be served with wireless communication service by the femtocell. In addition to registering with the femtocell, the WCD may limit certain of its own functions while it is in the vehicle and being served with wireless communication service by the femtocell.Type: GrantFiled: January 20, 2014Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Warren B. Patent number: 8873395Abstract: Quality of Service (QoS) priority values and thresholds are defined for various service types assignable to user equipment (UE devices) including multiple bandclass devices. The QoS thresholds can be used for determining whether resources of a default or alternate bandclass should be used for a new call request or whether a timer should be initiated to wait for additional resources to become available. A default QoS priority values can be assigned to each service type and used for voice calls requested by UE devices. QoS priority values with lower priority can be used for data calls. The priority of priority values can decrease as the data rate for the data calls increases. Thresholds for blocking call requests can be increased or decreased to improve likelihood that resources for call requests with higher priority service types are granted at the expense granting resources for call requests with lower priority service types.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 2013Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: John W. Patent number: 8873508Abstract: Methods and devices for assigning a resource to a wireless communication device (WCD) based on soft handoff capabilities are presented. In particular, a radio access network (RAN) component, such as a base station controller (BSC) may receive call initiation requests from multiple WCDs. Some of these WCDs may be eligible for channel-assignment-into-soft-handoff (CASHO), wherein a WCD is assigned multiple traffic channels from multiple wireless coverage areas during call initiation procedures. However, the RAN component may take into account the effects of CASHO on WCDs with limited wireless coverage. Thus, if CASHO procedures could result in one or more WCDs not being assigned a traffic channel, the RAN component may refrain from performing CASHO, or at least refrain from performing CASHO to its full extent, in order to assign at least one traffic channel to other WCDs.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2010Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventor: Siddharth S. Patent number: 8874069Abstract: A wireless communication device (WCD) may be configured to engage in a wireless data communication session of a given type. The WCD may determine the given type of wireless data communication session, and based on the given type, the WCD may set itself to operate in a current operational state selected from a group consisting of a first and second operational state. While engaged in the wireless data communication session, the WCD may wirelessly receive a voice call setup request from a radio access network (RAN) seeking to set up a voice call to the WCD over an air-interface protocol. In accordance with the current operational state, the WCD may make a decision of whether to accept or reject the voice call request so as to interrupt or not interrupt the wireless data communication session.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2012Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Young Zhao, Jasinder P. Patent number: 8868415Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for control of discontinuous transmission based on vocoder and voice activity. An access terminal (AT) may engage in a communication session via an encoder-decoder in a network device in a wireless network. During silence intervals of the communication session, when the AT has no data to transmit, the AT may transmit periodic silence frames at a silence-frame rate to the encoder-decoder. The silence frames may contain parameters for generation of audio noise by the network device. Upon determining that the encoder-decoder has ceased transmitting data to the AT in response to a prolonged absence of transmissions from the AT, the AT may increase the silence-frame rate so as to reduce the duration of the absence of transmissions from the AT, and correspondingly cause the encoder-decoder to begin transmitting audio data to the AT.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2012Date of Patent: October 21, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Deveshkumar Rai, Sachin R. Patent number: 8855676Abstract: Disclosed is a method for providing satellite assistance data to facilitate determination of the location of a mobile station, particularly for instance a mobile station served by a femtocell. When a positioning server receives a request for the location of a mobile station, the positioning server will determine from the request the mobile station is served by a femtocell and that the positioning server should query a femtocell server for seed data, or the positioning server may otherwise determine from the request that the positioning server should query the femtocell server for seed data. The seed data would preferably be geographic coordinates of a femtocell with which the mobile station is registered. The positioning server may then use that seed data to facilitate obtaining satellite assistance data from a base station almanac, and the positioning serve may provide the satellite assistance data to the mobile station to facilitate location determination.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2011Date of Patent: October 7, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Scott B. Patent number: 8855686Abstract: A method and system of paging a mobile station. In response to receiving a request to set up a communication with a mobile station, a radio network controller (RNC) may identify a last-known location of the mobile station. The RNC may then identify two or more paging areas based on the mobile station's last-known location. In turn, the RNC may determine an indication of traffic for each of the identified paging areas. For example, the RNC may determine an indication of traffic for a paging area by (a) determining a number of communication requests received by BTSs located in the paging area within a given time period, (b) determining a number of BTSs located in the paging area, and (c) dividing the number of communication requests by the number of BTSs. Thereafter, the RNC may page the mobile station in the identified paging area having the highest indication of traffic.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2008Date of Patent: October 7, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Siddharth S. Patent number: 8848579Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for using transport-layer source ports to identify sources of packet payloads in mixed tethering and non-tethering environments so that, e.g., a provider may differentially bill between those two types of data communication. In particular, a wireless device capable of sending data from both tethered and non-tethered sources may use specified transport-layer source ports to identify data as coming from various different sources. Network entities that record data usage associated with the device may detect which port the device used to send data and use port-to-source (e.g., port-to-hardware-interface) mapping data to determine the source (e.g., the source hardware interface) of the data. The network entities may report this data usage, along with the determined data sources, to a billing system so that the billing system may accordingly differentially bill a subscriber associated with the device.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2012Date of Patent: September 30, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Raymond E. Patent number: 8848688Abstract: A method and system for using a handoff threshold associated with a slot cycle index to determine whether to perform access terminal handoff from a current pilot signal to a target pilot signal. The determination may be conditioned on whether the current pilot signal and target pilot signal are transmitted from base stations within a common subnet. If the base stations are within a common subnet, handoff of the access terminal is based on a default handoff threshold. On the other hand, if the base stations are not within a common subnet, then the determination of whether to perform access terminal handoff from a current pilot signal to a target pilot signal may be made based on the handoff threshold associated with the slot cycle index. As a result, ping-ponging of the access terminal from one subnet to another may be reduced or prevented.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2008Date of Patent: September 30, 2014Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Andrew M.
