Abstract: A method and system for actually identifying a source of real-time media within an RTP stream. A sending node such as a client station or conference server inserts into an RTP header of at least one packet of the RTP stream an actual identification of the media source, such as a text representation of the name or e-mail address of a user who provided the media or a phone number of the station that provided the media. For instance, the sending node could insert the actual identification into an RTP header extension. A receiving node can then receive the RTP stream, read the actual identification from the RTP header, and present the actual identification to a user while playing out the underlying media to the user.
Abstract: A repeater for a wireless network might use a first communication interface to detect the presence of a wireless device. Alternatively, another network element might use the first communication interface to detect the presence of the wireless device and then provide a notification to the repeater. The first communication interface might be a low-power communication interface, such as one that uses Bluetooth. In response to detecting a wireless device or receiving a notification, the repeater might switch to an active mode and begin repeating signals on the wireless network via a second communication interface, such as one that uses CDMA.
Abstract: Increased data communication capacity in a sector of a CDMA wireless system using a combination of code division multiplexing and time division multiplexing. Adjacent subsectors may transmit carrier signals having the same frequency and using the same Walsh codes may be used by imposing a partial offset of the sector PN sequence.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing a missed-call list in a telephone device by flagging a missed-call entry as “called-back” when a telephone call is placed to or received from the party listed in a missed-call list. The telephone device may still maintain the missed-call in the missed-call list after being flagged. A user may view the missed-call list to see which missed-calls (if any) the user has returned and which missed-call (if any) the user has not returned. Beneficially, the invention enables a user to retain valuable information about a missed-call and is therefore advantageous to the user of a telephone.
Abstract: A network node in a communication path between a client station and a web content server determines or estimates a power consumption level associated with particular web content requested by the client station. The client station is preferably a wireless communications device operating on battery power. Based on the current battery level in the device, the battery type or total capacity, user preferences and determined or estimated power consumption level, the node sends a power consumption notification to the client station, either prior to or simultaneously with the transmission of the web content. The notification message alerts the user to the possibility of their battery being drawn down to a low level if they download the content, and thus allows the user to abort the download to preserve battery capacity.
Abstract: A method and system for managing handoff of a cellular wireless data session between a first wireless coverage area and second wireless coverage area. A first radio network controller (RNC) predicts that handoff of the data session will soon be necessary. Radio resources for continuing the data session in the second wireless coverage area are reserved. The reserved radio resources may be controlled by the first RNC or by a second RNC. The first RNC sends, to a wireless communication device, a predictive handoff directive message that instructs the wireless communication device (i) to wait a designated period of time, and (ii) to then handoff the data session.
Abstract: A mechanism is disclosed for managing delivery of digital image files to image processing labs for printing. The mechanism involves marking a digital image file with metadata that indicates a processing lab at which an image in the file should be printed. In turn, the mechanism involves reading the metadata indication from the file to identify the processing lab where the image should be printed and responsively sending the image file to that designated processing lab. Such digital image files could be sent to an image hub, which could then read the metadata indications from the files and responsively route the files to designated processing labs for printing.
Abstract: A method and system for implicitly controlling the floor during a packet-based real-time media conference. A participating station implicitly requests the floor by simply beginning to send media to the conference server. If no other participant currently holds the floor, the server grants the floor to the first station from which the server receives an incoming media stream. Further, in a half-duplex conference, if a participating station receives an incoming media stream when it is sending an outgoing media stream, the station treats the incoming media stream as an implicit floor denial and responsively alerts a user that the floor is denied.
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for an optimized mobile-IPv6 encapsulation. A mobile node sends packets to a correspondent node by encapsulating a packet using an IPv6 routing extension header, and reverse tunneling the packet to a home agent. The home agent modifies the packet and forwards it to the correspondent node. When the correspondent node sends packets to the mobile node's home address, the home agent intercepts the packet, encapsulates the packet with an IPv6 routing extension header, and tunnels the packet to the mobile node. Consequently, because packets are tunneled using IPv6 routing extension headers, the amount of overhead in each encapsulated packet is reduced, thus increasing the available bandwidth in a network.
Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a wireless local area network (WLAN) and a second interface for wireless communication with a wireless wide area network (WWAN). An internetwork service control system controls how services are provided to the multi-mode mobile station via the WLAN and the WWAN. The same service logic in the internetwork service control system can control the provision of services via both the WLAN and the WWAN. For example, a service logic module can be executed to define SIP signaling to control the provision of a service via the WLAN and can be executed to define WIN signaling to control the provision of the same service via the WWAN. The internetwork service control system may also include a call state monitor that maintains the call state of the multi-mode mobile station via the WLAN and the WWAN.
Abstract: An IP PBX system that serves enterprise telephones via a landline IP network connection is be expanded to serve cellular wireless communication devices (WCD) via a cellular wireless carrier's radio access network (RAN). Calls to and from the cellular WCD are connected through the cellular carrier's RAN and the IP PBX system, so that the IP PBX system can control and manage the calls just as the IP PBX would control and manage calls involving other extensions on the IP PBX. A cellular WCD thereby becomes an IP PBX client station, i.e., an extension on the IP PBX system. As such, the cellular WCD can seamlessly benefit from many of the same IP PBX features that other more conventional IP PBX client stations (e.g., desk phones) enjoy.

Abstract: A method for dynamically directing a wireless repeater is provided. A repeater will include an antenna, a mobile station modem, a processor and data storage. The processor will cause the antenna to sweep over a coverage area, possibly through increments. At each increment, the antenna will receive signals and pass the signals to the MSM. The MSM will then apply a rake receiver to identify characteristics in the received signals, such as PN offsets and signal-to-noise ratios (EC/IO) for each PN offset, and the processor will record in the data storage the PN offsets and corresponding signal-to-noise ratios at that increment. Given this data, the processor will then instruct the antenna to move to the increment where the MSM detected the strongest signal-to-noise ratio. As a result, the antenna of the repeater will point at a base station that is likely to supply the signal with the highest signal-to-noise ratio.
Abstract: Method and improvements for joining wireless mesh networks are provided. In one embodiment, a controller in each network receives a message from a node in its respective network, the message indicating that the respective nodes each received a signal from a node in the other network. Each controller, in response to receiving the respective messages, validates the other network, and responsively (a) directs its respective node to enter a bridging mode and (b) provides its respective node with bridging data that includes a security key for communications between the two nodes. The two nodes then associate with each other using the security key, allowing communications to pass between the two wireless mesh networks.

Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for wireless communication with a first wireless network, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN), and a second interface for wireless communication with a second wireless network, such as a wireless wide area network (WWAN). When a call is placed to the multi-mode mobile station, a softswitch or other controller attempts to establish the call with the multi-mode mobile station via the first wireless network. If this attempt is unsuccessful because the multi-mode mobile station is inaccessible via the first wireless network, the controller then attempts to establish the call via the second wireless network.

Abstract: A wireless device may connect to a telecommunications network and register with a Session Initiation Protocol server. The Session Initiation Protocol server may notify a network element on the telecommunications network of the wireless device's registration. In response to a disconnection of the wireless device from the telecommunications network, the network element may notify the Session Initiation Protocol server of the wireless device's disconnection. The Session Initiation Protocol server may then responsively deregister the wireless device.
Abstract: The present invention includes a method and system for determining link weights that when utilized will optimize the performance of a network in the event of a link failure without the need to alter the link weights. The method includes determining two sets of links, one that includes links with a significant amount of loading and one that includes links with a modest amount of loading. A set of permissible solutions is generated utilizing one randomly chosen link from each set. After omitting recent best permissible solutions, the remaining permissible solutions are evaluated by analyzing for the complete network topology and for the topologies corresponding to all single-link failure states and the best permissible solution is found. If the best permissible solution is better than the current optimal solution, then the best permissible solution is made the optimal solution. These steps are repeated until a predetermined number of iterations have been evaluated without a change in the optimal solution.
Abstract: A VPN server on a radio access network may initiate a virtual private network (VPN) over a shared network, e.g., Internet, on behalf of a wireless terminal. The VPN may span the shared network, but not span the radio access network. As a result, the radio access network may be able to analyze and manipulate data sent by the wireless terminal. Additionally, the VPN may securely transport the data through the shared network.

Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for reactively managing dropped calls in a wireless communication system. A mobile station determines that it has experienced a dropped call. In response, the mobile station allows a user to continue communicating, such as by recording the user's speech, for instance. The mobile station may then play out the recorded speech to the user or to another call participant, such as upon reestablishment of the call.
