Patent number: 7305090Abstract: A method and system is disclosed for using common provisioning data to activate cellular wireless devices. A wireless carrier may distribute multiple wireless devices containing a common set of pre-activation provisioning data, such as a common MIN/ESN pair, as well as a unique post-activation data, such as a unique ESN. When such a device is powered on, it may use the common pre-activation provisioning data to gain RF access and then enter into a provisioning data session with a provisioning server. Through the provisioning server, the carrier may tie the device to a service account, and the device may acquire and store further post-activation data, such as a unique MIN. The device may thereafter engage in wireless communication service, using its post-activation ESN and MIN as a basis to gain RF access.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2003Date of Patent: December 4, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: James M. Patent number: 7302234Abstract: A portable interference-generating device for inducing desired frame error characteristics, such as desired frame error patterns and rates, at a mobile unit receiving a carrier signal having at least one data channel having a plurality of data frames. The induced frame errors may be used to test a digital radio receiver's behavior in the presence of frame errors that may occur as a result of various impairments in a CDMA wireless communication channel. The portable interference-generating device includes a noise source that provides a noise signal and a pulse generator that is used to gate the noise signal according to a desired frame error characteristic at the mobile unit. The gated noise signal is provided to the mobile unit via a coupling element, which preferably couples the gated noise signal directly to an antenna radiation element on the mobile unit.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 2005Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Braden J. Patent number: 7301935Abstract: A method and system for responding to a request to establish a dial-up data session from a user terminal to a remote destination. Instead of initiating a dial-up data session, the user terminal will initiate a packet-data session with a translation node that serves the remote destination and will provide the translation node with information about initiating the dial-up data session. The translation node will then initiate circuit-data session with the remote destination and will bridge the packet-data session with the circuit-data session, so as to establish an end-to-end data session between the user terminal and the remote destination. Advantageously, by setting up a packet-data session between the user terminal and the translation node, the underlying data may be carried over an access link at a higher service level than would normally be provided for a circuit-data session carried over that access link. Further, this can be done transparently to a user.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2002Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Pawan Chaturvedi, Brian L. Senogles

Patent number: 7302392Abstract: A computer system in the form of a voice command platform includes a voice browser and voice-based applications. The voice browser has global-level grammar elements and the voice applications have application-level grammar and grammar elements. A programming feature is provided by which developers of the voice applications can programmably weigh or weight global-level grammar elements relative to the application-level grammar or grammar elements. As a consequence of the weighting, a speech recognition engine for the voice browser is more likely to accurately recognize voice input from a user. The weighting can be applied on the application as a whole, or at any given state in the application. Also, the weighting can be made to the global level grammar elements as a group, or on an individual basis.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2003Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Balaji S. Patent number: 7302265Abstract: A mobile station in an idle state is associated with a current sector-carrier that has a current pilot channel at a current carrier frequency. In response to a request to originate a call, the mobile station compares its current sector-carrier with one or more candidate sector-carriers that have pilot channels at carrier frequencies distinct from the current carrier frequency. The mobile station measures received signal strengths of the current carrier frequency and the one or more candidate carrier frequencies and measures pilot signal levels of the current pilot channel and the one or more candidate pilot channels. If a candidate sector-carrier has a carrier frequency with a received signal strength that exceeds that of the current sector-carrier, and has a pilot channel with a pilot signal level that exceeds that of the current sector-carrier, the mobile station uses that candidate sector-carrier to transmit a call origination message.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 2005Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Nandish M. Patent number: 7302255Abstract: A method for a WLAN access point to allocate telephone numbers for use by mobile stations. The access point includes stored data indicating one or more allowed telephone numbers. When a mobile station associated with the access point and acquires an IP address, the mobiles station sends a telephone number allocation-request to the access point, seeking allocation of a particular telephone number for use by the mobile station. If the telephone requested number is one of those allowed, then the access point associates the telephone number with the mobile station. On the other hand, if the requested telephone number is not one of those allowed, then the access point provides the mobile station with a list of the available telephone numbers, to allow a user to select a desired telephone number, and the mobile station may then send a new telephone number allocation-request, seeking allocation of the selected telephone number.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2005Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Michael T. Publication number: 20070271578Abstract: A system for providing pre-paid access to digital streaming media tracks a number of credits associated with each subscriber. The system measures subscriber use of a digital media stream by embedding frame indicators in the stream at periodic intervals. Each frame indicator includes a URL or other response address. The frame indicators may be inserted, for example, in an RTP header of the digital media stream. Subscriber devices, upon receiving frame indicators, send responses to the response address. With each response received from a subscriber device, the system decrements the number of credits available to the subscriber. The system may stop delivering the media stream to a subscriber who runs out of credits, until that subscriber purchases more credits.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 19, 2006Publication date: November 22, 2007Applicant: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Balaji S. Patent number: 7298702Abstract: A method and system for providing remote voice communication service via a wireless local area network (WLAN). A WLAN access point is arranged with predefined security settings to establish a VPN tunnel over a packet network with a VPN terminator on a remote network. The access point then wirelessly receives voice traffic from a wireless terminal operating in the WLAN and sends the voice traffic over the VPN tunnel to the remote network, for transmission to a call control device, which provides connectivity with a voice transport network. And the access point similarly receives voice traffic via the VPN tunnel from the remote network and sends the voice traffic wirelessly to the wireless terminal. Advantageously, multiple wireless terminals operating on the WLAN can engage in voice calls concurrently via the access point.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2002Date of Patent: November 20, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Bryce A. Patent number: 7292864Abstract: A method and system for tailoring responses from a location-determination system. A location-determination system will receive a position request from a location-based service (such as a PSAP), seeking the location of a wireless communication device, and the location-determination system will provide a position response, indicating the location of the wireless communication device. A rules engine positioned in the communication path between the location-determination system and the location-based service will intercept the position response and will tailor the response in a manner dependent on the identity of the location-based service that sent the request. Advantageously, a wireless service provider can control operation of the rules engine to dictate how to tailor various position responses, without the need to modify operation of the location-determination system.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2004Date of Patent: November 6, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Khaled Al-Khashti, Keith Moll, Brent Burpee

Patent number: 7287064Abstract: A method and system for measuring an Internet user's level of interest in one or more subjects. For a given subject, web pages that are sent to the user are analyzed to determine how many keywords related to the given subject appear in the web pages. The keyword count is then used as a basis to establish a measure of the user's interest level in the given subject. The analysis may take various forms and can be carried out over successive time periods, so as to regularly update a measure of the user's interest level in the subject. Provided with a measure of the user's interest level in a given subject, a service provider can then tailor services for the user accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 2001Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Assignee: Sprint Spectrum L.P.Inventors: Debashis Haldar, Von K.
