Patent number: 8027935Abstract: Systems and methods which operate to reserve an amount of value associated with a value bearing indicia (VBI) request or requests are shown. Embodiments facilitate completion of a multiple VBI session without failing due to insufficient value balance once the session has begun. Additionally or alternatively, embodiments facilitate later or subsequent (e.g., scheduled) completion of a VBI session, whether a session for a single VBI or multiple VBI, without failing due to insufficient value balance. Value reservations may be made automatically and/or manually. Embodiments provide various reservation priority levels, such as to individual users, user groups, user systems, sessions, types of sessions, jobs, etc., in order to facilitate completion of various desired operations without failure due to insufficient value. Value reservation techniques according to embodiments do not introduce additional transactions into a normal VBI session flow.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2008Date of Patent: September 27, 2011Assignee: Stamps.com IncInventor: Geoffrey Charles Begen

Patent number: 7963437Abstract: Systems and methods which provide for distributed printing of personalized postage indicia are shown. Embodiments facilitate printing of personalized postage indicia at various distributed printing locations, such as user sites, retail locations, consumer kiosks, etc., while implementing techniques to avoid widespread availability of live (e.g., active or representing postage value) postage barcodes, prevent printing of fraudulent postage indicia, and/or preventing approved images from being replaced with unapproved images in printed postage indicia. Embodiments facilitate distributed printing of personalized postage indicia through implementation of a technique wherein a manufacturer, such as a postage service provider or a postal authority, provides a centralized print of unassigned tokens on postage stock. The unassigned tokens are configured or otherwise able to form a complete postage indicia when appropriate personalized content is associated therewith.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2008Date of Patent: June 21, 2011Assignee: Stamps.com Inc.Inventors: Kenneth Thomas McBride, James Michael Bortnak, JP Leon, John Roland Clem

Publication number: 20110078091Abstract: A system and method for remote postage metering of postage indicia, including demanding a desired postage amount and subsequently printing the postage indicia onto a piece of mail. A user inputs certain necessary information, as well as additional desired information, into a local processor-based system. The local system then assembles a postage demand in suitable format and transmits the same to a remote postage metering device. The remote postage metering device then verifies the demand for authority to demand and valid funding. Upon verification, the remote postage meter assembles a data packet representing an authorized postage indicia. The data packet is transmitted to the local system for printing. Printing of the postage indicia may be unaccompanied, or may include additional information. Such additional information may include destination and return address, machine readable routing or identification information, or a complete document to be posted.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 8, 2010Publication date: March 31, 2011Applicant: Stamps.com IncInventors: Salim G. Patent number: 7827908Abstract: Systems and methods which employ a movable platen and associated print head which travel in a same direction to interact with a same surface of an item to be printed upon are shown. The movable platen according to embodiments includes a printing orifice through which the print head may interact with a surface of an item for printing. The movable platen preferably engages the surface of the item and applies a pressure thereto sufficient to substantially flatten the surface. Embodiments implement a print head platen which engages the surface of the item to be printed to provide flattening of the surface localized to the print head. A printer assembly of embodiments may not employ a lower platen or other structure to support an item to be printed, thereby facilitating the use of the printer with respect to any size of item.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2006Date of Patent: November 9, 2010Assignee: Stamps.com Inc.Inventor: JP Leon
