  • Publication number: 20100314470
Abstract: An atomizing injector comprises a body having a central bore with a valve situated in the bore, leading to a chamber. An actuator moves the valve between closed condition and open conditions, selectively exposing the chamber to a flow of pressurized liquid. A discharge port extends from the chamber to a discharge orifice. A swirl element is situated in the chamber, while leaving a free space in the chamber immediately above the discharge port. When the valve is opened, liquid flows into the chamber, through the swirl element into the space, forming a whirl in the space before passing through the discharge port and exiting the discharge orifice as an atomized whirling spray.

  • Publication number: 20100313553
Abstract: A urea solution injection system and an injector with which urea solution or other exhaust treatment liquid from a source tank can be injected as an atomized spray into an exhaust pipe. A metering pump with integrated injection nozzle are contained in a common housing mounted directly to the exhaust pipe, thereby eliminating the separate electric motor driven pump, line between pump, and injector in conventional systems.

  • Publication number: 20090208355
Abstract: A high pressure radial piston fuel pump is featured having an hydraulic head with two individual radial pumping pistons and associated pumping chambers, annularly spaced around a cavity in the head where a rotating eccentric drive member with associated actuation ring are situated. A rolling interaction is provided between the actuation ring and the inner ends of the pistons for intermittent actuation. Relative rotation is provided between the actuation ring and the drive member. Each piston has a piston bore that has a centerline that intersects the actuation ring but is offset (X) from the drive axis as viewed in cross section perpendicularly to the drive axis and the piston bore centerlines are parallel to each other but offset (Y) from each other as viewed in longitudinal section along the drive axis.

  • Patent number: 7524171
Abstract: An hydraulic head features two, three, or four individual radial pumping pistons and associated pumping chambers, annularly spaced around a cavity in the head where an eccentric drive member with associated outer rolling actuation ring are situated. The piston shoe or foot smoothly enlarges from the piston stem, thereby avoiding the concentration of stress at the interface. Another improvement is in the capture of the piston foot through beveled holes at the ends of a C-band spring such that the bevel substantially conforms to the contour of the foot and thereby reduces stresses and wear. Yet another improvement is that the C-band spring is retained within a guide channel of the cavity wall thereby permitting apparent reciprocating displacement of the spring in parallel with the reciprocation of the pistons, while avoiding axial movement or tilting within the cavity.

  • Patent number: 7442292
Abstract: A display provides an indication of the remaining useful life of a filter element by providing a visible level of fluid in the display corresponding to the remaining useful life. The fluid level is adjusted by a valve responsive to a pressure differential across the filter element. An increasing pressure differential produces an increased fluid level in the display. The display may be provided with markings indicating that a particular fluid level in the display corresponds to the need to change a filter cartridge containing the filter element.

  • Patent number: 7249722
Abstract: A fuel injector incorporates a flow control into the needle valve and valve body to regulate fuel flow through the injector. The flow control defines an initial pilot fuel flow path that is closed by needle valve movement away from the nozzle seat. A primary fuel flow path requires axial movement of the needle valve through a mid-range position in which neither fuel flow paths are open. At low engine speeds, the needle valve is not driven through its mid-range position and closes prior to being driven to its fully open position, resulting in a pilot injection. At higher engine speeds, the needle valve is driven through its mid-range position eliminating a distinct pilot injection to provide only rate shaping.

  • Patent number: 6959878
Abstract: A compact fuel injection nozzle includes a unitary nozzle body, a nozzle cap, a valve member and a spring sub assembly. The spring sub assembly provides a biasing force against a valve member that includes an integral lift stop. The biasing force holds the nose of the valve member against the valve seat of the nozzle body until the fuel pressure inside the injector exceeds a minimum opening pressure. The lift stop provides a stop limit, permitting the valve member to move away from the valve seat a predetermined axial distance. The minimum opening pressure and valve opening axial distance may be calibrated by selection and installation of shims.

  • Patent number: 6911143
Abstract: A filter assembly employs radially inwardly and outwardly displaced portions of a peripheral roll seam on the cartridge as components of a cartridge compatibility matrix. A substantially annular space, the radial configuration of which varies with the convoluted roll seam, is defined between the roll seam and a cylindrical wall of the cartridge end cap. The base includes an axially projecting receptacle wall that terminates in a coded lip to define a receptacle for receiving the cartridge end cap. The cartridge mounting system requires axial reception of the coded lip into the substantially annular space of the filter cartridge. The coded lip is configured to block reception and mating of any filter cartridge whose roll seam defines a substantially annular space of incompatible radial configuration. The number, configuration and location of inwardly and outwardly displaced portions of the roll seam may be varied to provide a variety of unique compatibility matrices.

  • Patent number: 6901844
Abstract: A radial piston pump in which the sliding shoe has a central region that engages the driven end of the piston and an outer region or rim surrounding the driven end of the piston and projecting into the pumping chamber bore a distance such that for all positions of the piston relative to the drive member, at least a portion of the outer region of the shoe remains within the pumping chamber bore. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a sliding shoe for a radial piston pump, wherein the shoe has a concave bottom side, a socket portion projecting centrally on the top side, and a plurality of guide arms projecting upwardly on the top side and spaced laterally from the socket portion. Preferably, the projecting rim is in the form of guide arms that are spaced apart to form a castellated, substantially annular rim around the socket portion.

  • Patent number: 6901893
Abstract: A valve deactivator assembly according to aspects of the present invention includes an inner body member that is slidably disposed in a longitudinal bore defined by an outer body member. Two diametrically opposed pistons are positioned in a transverse bore also defined by the outer body member. A pair of substantially identical latch members are outwardly biased against an inner end of the pistons by a compressed spring. The latch members are generally semi-cylindrical in shape and include flat truncated semi-circular upper and lower surfaces. The pistons apply radially inward force in response to engine oil pressure to adjacent latch member to move the latch member against the bias of the compressed spring to an unlatched position. The periphery of each latch member lower surface provides arcuate shoulder portions that engage angularly separated portions of a latching surface inside the outer body member.

  • Patent number: 6899083
Abstract: The invention is directed to the combination of fuel rail pressure control at lower speed using high pressure regulation plus fuel rail pressure control at higher speed using any of a variety of forms of inlet metering. The partial filing control at high speed can in one embodiment include pre-metering the quantity of feed fuel delivered to each pumping chamber, for example by modulating the feed pressure at the pumping chamber inlet. Another embodiment includes passing the feed fuel from the inlet passage through a fixed, calibrated orifice sized to pass sufficient feed fuel to fill the pumping chambers in the charging phase during operation of the engine in the low speed range, while in the high speed range the flow resistance of the orifice prevents the pumping chamber from filling in the charging phase, thereby monotonically decreasing the quantity of high pressure fuel delivered to the discharge passage in the discharge phase per engine revolution, with increasing speed above the transition speed.
