  • Patent number: 4779788
Abstract: To avoid having to metallize a bare glass fiber prior to soldering it into a hole of a metal part to obtain a hermetically sealed lead-through bushing, the solder is permitted to shrink onto the glass fiber. This is achieved by either soldering an additional solder body to the metal part outside the hole or providing the wall of the hole with a nonsolderable coating over part of its length. If the metal part is designed as a sleeve, a recess exposing part of the hole causes the solder to firmly shrink on to the bare glass fiber during solidification. The hermetic seal is obtained by arranging the connections of the solder with the metal part and with the glass fiber essentially one behind the other in the longitudinal direction of the glass fiber.

  • Patent number: 4772865
Abstract: A flat-type polarized relay with contact springs disposed at the sides of a parallel to the coil system. A magnetic core projects beyond the coil form and cooperates with movable pole plates disposed together with a permanent magnet in a transversely movable cross slide. The magnet yoke is a U-shaped member made from flat material. The base of the yoke is rigidly connected with the magnetic core, and the legs run along the sides of the coil. The relay has a small overall height and a high switching capacity at small energizing currents.

  • Patent number: 4768856
Abstract: Optical-waveguide coils are used in rotation rate measuring instruments. To protect the optical-waveguide coil (1) from external influences, such as sound waves, pressure, and temperature changes, which may result in measurement errors, it is wound on a coil form (2) of soft elastomer under low tension. The coil unit so formed (1/2) is then placed in the annular groove (4) of a housing (3/5). Spacers at the coil form (2) position the coil unit (1/2) in the annular groove in such a way that the coil (1) is exactly in the middle of the annular groove (4). The remaining free space of the annular groove (4) is then filled with a sealing compound (6) in a vacuum. The sealing compound also spreads between the windings of the coil (1). It is preferably the same material as that from which the coil form (2) is made.

  • Patent number: 4765805
Abstract: A method is disclosed for purifying waste gases containing extremely finely dispersed pollutants in dust form and pollutants in gas and vapor form, particularly for purifying waste gases produced in chemical vapor phase reactions during the manufacture of optical waveguide preforms. In a first step, dust is extracted in a dry, coated fabric filter (1). The gaseous and vaporous pollutants are then absorbed in a gas scrubber. During this gas-scrubbing process, as soon as the absorption liquid circulating in an absorption-liquid circulation system reaches a pretermined pollutant concentration, part of the absorption liquid is withdrawn from the absorption-liquid circulation system and detoxicated in a separate detoxication circulation system. The part withdrawn is simultaneously replaced by fresh, unpolluted absorption liquid.

  • Patent number: 4764705
Abstract: A deflection yoke is mounted on a picture tube in such a manner that a ring of thermoplastic material is first attached by adhesive bonding to the tube neck and the deflection yoke is then pushed onto the picture tube, so that a tubular extension to the coil form of the deflection yoke overlies the ring. The tubular extension is of the same thermoplastic material as the ring. When the deflection yoke has been adjusted, the thermoplastic ring and the tubular extension are joined together by a welding operation, e.g., by spot welding. The result is a rapidly setting and operationally stable joint between the deflection yoke and the picture tube. To improve adjustability, the ring can have a curved surface.

  • Patent number: 4762733
Abstract: In a color-picture tube, the conductive coating on the inside of the cone is a suspension without organic constituents. The conductive coating on the inside of the neck, which is contiguous to the conductive coating on the inside of the cone, consists of the aforementioned suspension with an addition of organic constituents. A sharp and scratch-resistant boundary between the conductive coating in the neck and the uncoated area of the neck is thus obtained.

  • Patent number: 4762988
Abstract: A circuit arrangement including a controllable optical resonator having a filter characteristic with a transmission peak arranged to pass laser radiation at a wavelength in the region of the transmission peak, wherein the resonator is positioned to receive the laser radiation at an angle such that two modes of the radiation, having respectively different polarization states, and wavelengths, are capable of propagating in the resonator. The resonator has control electrodes connected for receiving a voltage which determines the wavelength of the transmission peak of the filter characteristic and a source connected for applying to the electrodes a square-wave modulating voltage which varies between a first value which causes the transmission peak of the resonator to be substantially at the wavelength of one of the modes and a second value which causes the transmission peak of the resonator to be substantially at the wavelength of the other one of the modes.

  • Patent number: 4761795
Abstract: An improved receiver for modulated bandspread carrier signals is disclosed. The invention includes an antenna for intercepting a plurality of modulated carrier signals bandspread at a first clock rate; a radio frequency section in communication with the antenna for selecting a received signal from the plurality of signals; and an intermediate frequency section in communication with the radio frequency section for converting the received signal to an intermediate frequency signal. The intermediate frequency signal is digitized and multiplied by a pseudo-random code stored in a first memory for demodulation. Successive demodulation products are added, stored and used to provide in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) signals. Means are provided to for utilizing the I and Q signals to control the rate and the timing of the multiplication of the digitized signal with the pseudo-random code stored in the first memory.

  • Patent number: 4726965
Abstract: To metallize transparent conductive paths of indium tin oxide (ITO) on substrates of display devices, a solderable metal layer is applied by electroless deposition. If the metal layer is adjacent a liquid crystal display device, the display device may be manufactured and tested prior to the electroless deposition, with only an edge of the substrate being dipped into the deposition bath. Prior to the deposition of the solderable metal layer, the indium tin oxide surface may be reduced and an adhesion improving layer of may also be deposited by above the indium tin surface and below the solderable metal layer. Integrated circuits can then be soldered to the metallized conductive paths.

  • Patent number: 4726010
Abstract: The invention relates to an optical communication system for transmitting subscriber-assigned information in both directions between a center (1) and a plurality of subscribers (3ato 3n), particularly to the subscriber loop of a broadband communication system. In a remote distribution facility which is of either distributed (FIG. 1) or lumped (FIG. 2) design, the optical waveguides (5ato 5n) of a group of subscribers living or working near each other are coupled to a common optical waveguide (4) (or to two common optical waveguides) connected to the center (1). Subscriber-assigned signals to be transmitted from the center to the subscribers are combined into an electric time-division-multiplex signal which is transmitted as an optical signal with a single wavelength (.lambda..sub.o) to the vicinity of the subscribers and distributed to the latter. From the electric time-division-multiplex signal, each of the subscribers takes only the signal intended for him.

  • Patent number: 4719469
Abstract: A direction determining system having a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, a linear antenna array and a fast switching facility, the linear antenna array comprised of at least two antenna elements and the GPS receiver including two Costas Loops. The fast switching facility permits an input signal received by the two antenna elements to be processed and alternately supplied to the Costas Loops in synchronism for measuring the phases of the input signals received nearly simultaneously. The phase difference between the output signals of the two Costas Loops is measured in a phase meter and the pointing angle of the linear antenna array relative to the direction of a GPS satellite is determined by interferometry.
