Abstract: The present invention is an envelope sheet capable of being automatically printed and formed into a standard business envelope using a high-speed separate sheet printer in line with high-speed separate sheet folding and pressure sealing equipment. The present envelope sheet comprises a front panel connected to a back panel along a bottom fold line, to a closing flap along a top fold line, to a left-side flap along a left-side fold line and to a right-side flat along a right-side fold line. The front panel, back panel, closing flap and both side flaps each have an upper surface and a lower surface. The back panel is adhered to the left-side and right-side flaps with a latent adhesive sandwiched therebetween. The present invention also includes a method and apparatus for automatically printing and forming an envelope from the present envelope sheet, as well as automatically stuffing the envelope while it is being formed.

Abstract: A form having detachable labels and a wristband is provided. The form includes a face ply adhered to a liner ply by a pressure sensitive adhesive. The face ply includes a first portion and a second portion, where the first portion is die cut to form a wristband and the second portion is die cut to form a series of detachable labels. The form may be printed in a single pass through a printer to provide the wristband and labels with correlating printed indicia.

Abstract: A window-containing mailer is provided which is suitable for use in nonimpact printers using heated fuser rolls. A heat and moisture resistant adhesive which resists picking at temperatures encountered in the fusing rolls secures a transparent polymeric film or glassine patch to the mailer substrate. The adhesive may be either a crosslinkable aqueous-based latex or emulsion or a radiation curable composition.

Abstract: A multipart form and label combination is provided which may be printed in a single pass through a printer. The combination includes a face ply which may be printed with nonvariable and variable indicia, a film ply, and an optional intermediate liner ply. The combination also includes first, second or third removable portions such as, for example, a label, receipt or postcard. In a preferred embodiment, the multipart form and label combination is used as an inspection form.

Abstract: A mailer or business form intermediate including a built-in reply envelope. The mailer comprises a single substrate sheet divided into four panels. At least three of the four panels are of substantially the same longitudinal dimension. The reply envelope is fashioned from the second and third panels upon folding. A closure flap for the reply envelope is also included. The mailer also contains provisions for including a number of partitions for labels or statements, a two-ply card, or a window for addresses.

Abstract: A mailer or business form intermediate including a built-in two-ply card is provided. The mailer comprises a single substrate sheet divided into three or four panels. The two-ply card is fashioned from lines of weakness forming single card plies in two adjacent panels which when folded come into contact and are held together with adhesive to form the two-ply card. Additional adhesives are employed to seal the mailer. Alternative embodiments include four panels in a side-by-side arrangement or a business form embodiment wherein the additional adhesives are not employed.

Abstract: Multiple ply labels include removable single ply portions for use in facilitating package shipment operations. Two-ply and a three-ply embodiments are disclosed with release material being applied to portions of a second or bottom ply which are overlain by tab portions of a first or top ply having adhesive applied to the underside of the tab portions and around the periphery of the top and bottom plies to adhere the plies to one another to assemble the labels. The tab portions are preferably formed by die cuts; however, lines of weakness created for example by creasing or lines of perforations can be used to make the tab portions readily separable from the top ply. Card portions are also formed by lines of perforations or other lines of weakness in the top ply with the card portions being formed clear of any adhesive coating such that they are free of adhesive for filing, mailing or other applications related to the package shipment operations.

Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a multiple-ply label form is provided which includes a plurality of readily removable elements for use in facilitating business operations, such as package shipment. The removable elements include at least one adhesive backed element securable elsewhere by means of the adhesive, and a single-ply and/or multiple-ply element readily separable from the balance of the label form. The adhesive backed element may have one or more plies. Mailing information or other indicia may be applied on each element as desired. The single-ply and/or multiple-ply element may have an adhesive free backing for filing, mailing or other applications related to the business employing the label form.

Abstract: A business record such as a form, tag, label or the like is provided in which different selected colored areas may be activated in a single pass through a printer. In one embodiment, coatings of initially colorless color formers and color developers are coated on selected areas of a substrate surface. The color formers and color developers combine upon exposure to an imaging force, such as heat or pressure, to form different colored visible areas on the sheet. In an alternative embodiment, the coatings of color formers and color developers are self-contained coatings having pressure-rupturable microcapsules containing either the color formers or said color developers.

Abstract: A construction for a laminated card or label is provided including a transparent film having a pressure sensitive adhesive on one surface thereof and liner stock having first and second major surfaces. The first surface has a release coating adhered to the pressure sensitive adhesive on the film. Variable information may be printed on the second surface of the liner stock within the die cut area, and the die cut card removed from the transparent film and replaced printed side down onto the adhesive surface of the film, thereby laminating the card to the film. The card is then peeled away from remainder of the construction at the die cut around the film and folded with the indicia facing outward to laminate the sides the card together. The printed surfaces of the card are direct contact with the adhesive, thus preventing tampering of the card.

Abstract: A tri-fold label or business form is provided. The tri-fold label includes a label ply and a liner ply, both having respective first and second sides. Through a series of die cuts and lines of perforations, first, second, and intermediate panels may be defined on the label ply. An additional panel, one or more side panels, and a removable tab may also be provided. The liner ply remains adhered to portions of the label when folded and applied to a surface to facilitate removal of various panels of the label.

Abstract: A web or sheet product is provided which is coated on at least a portion of its surface with a bond-enabling material for adhering toner particles, on the surface of the sheet. The sheet product can be used as a mailer or confidential form which is sealed using toner particles as the adhesive. The bond-enabling material may be a polymer which is coated on the sheet as a liquid and then cured to form a film on the surface of the sheet. The bond-enabling material is resistant to melting or degrading when exposed to temperatures used for fusing toner particles, and additionally may act as a tie coat to enhance the adhesion of toner particles to the surface of the sheet. The bond-enabling material may be coated on the peripheral edges of the sheet, and toner particles are printed over the bond-enabling material on the peripheral edges of the sheet. The sheet is folded and sealed by the application of heat and pressure to the edges of the sheet.

Abstract: A business form such as a label, tag or the like is provided in which a thermally imagable substrate has on selected portions of its surface a plurality of different colored areas. At least one of the colored areas is obscured by thermally imaging the substrate in a selected area so as to provide color coded information. The colored areas may be preprinted as half-tone screened areas on the substrate in a number of different patterns and arrangements. The form may be printed with both color coded information and variable information in a single printing pass.

Abstract: A mailer assembly which can be supplied to a user in intermediate form and which, when assembled and sealed, has an enhanced ability to shield confidential information from unauthorized view is provided. The mailer assembly may also include an integral return envelope and also may be designed so that variable information can be printed on the sheets making up the mailer prior to assembly using nonimpact printers such as laser printers which use heat and pressure to fuse toner to paper. The mailer assembly includes first and second sheets in superimposed relation, with each of the first and second sheets having a pair of marginal side edges and a pair of end edges. The mailer further includes removable marginal side and end strips for opening the mailer. The first and second sheets are secured together parallel to their respective marginal side and end edges to form a subassembly.

Abstract: A pressure sensitive adhesive composition is provided for use on cellulosic substrates which will not become tacky under high temperatures, lose adhesive properties due to contact with silicone oils, "block" when stacked prior to printing, or lose bond-forming ability with age. Non-thermoplastic pigment particles and a compound selected from the group consisting of a natural rubber latex, a graft copolymer of natural rubber and acrylic monomer and a blend of the natural rubber latex and the graft copolymer are mixed together to form an adhesive with a glass transition temperature in the range of -10.degree. to -78.degree. C., a dielectric constant of about 2.25 to 2.62 and a green strength of 0.05 to 0.75 p.s.i. The adhesive may also optionally contain a chloroprene-methacrylic acid copolymer latex and a vinyl-methacrylic acid copolymer latex.

Abstract: A cellulosic substrate suitable for use as an envelope or mailer is provided which includes a transparentized portion which has been impregnated with a liquid polymerizable transparentizing material which has then been cured by exposure to radiation. The transparentized portion is no thicker than the remainder of the substrate to permit stacking of the substrate. The transparentized portion may also include carbonless imaging capabilities.

Abstract: A single multipurpose tuck label/form is provided and is imprinted with only a single pass of a printer. The multipurpose tuck label/form includes a label ply and a liner ply, both having respective first and second sides. The first side of the liner ply contacts the second side of the label ply and includes a release coating thereon. Through a unique placement of the release coating on the liner ply and pattern-coated adhesive on the label ply, the tuck label/form can be imprinted in a single pass through a computer-driven printer and may be used without the need for any die cuts to be made on the liner ply.

Abstract: An optically variable device for use on security documents to deter unauthorized reproduction is provided which contains a warning message that is not readily apparent to an observer but that reproduces as a visible warning message when copied. The device comprises a pattern of light reflecting surfaces which comprise a reflection diffraction grating having a plurality of grooves that vary in orientation and blaze angle. In an alternative embodiment, a machine-readable optically variable device is provided in which the pattern of specularly light-reflecting surfaces produces a machine-readable message in response to light impinging on the device.

Abstract: A process for making melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules in an aqueous solution containing a high concentration of a water miscible or water soluble organic solvent is provided. The aqueous solution is prepared and a water insoluble melamine-formaldehyde pre-condensate is dissolved therein by adjusting the temperature and organic solvent concentration of the aqueous solution such that the melamine-formaldehyde pre-condensate is barely soluble therein. A substance to be encapsulated, preferably an oily solution containing a dyestuff precursor, is dispersed into the aqueous solution to form an emulsion, the melamine-formaldehyde pre-condensate being insoluble in the substance to be encapsulated.
