  • Patent number: 4813195
Abstract: A gasket having an integral formed corner is disclosed. The corner includes a resilient member having a first and second portion. The first and second portions have free depending ends which are secured to gasket strips to form a peripheral gasket. The other end of the first and second portions are joined together such that the portions are angled with respect to one another. Also, the first and second portions each have a first face and a pair of glass securing wings which project from each of the first and second portions. A channel to receive glass is formed between each pair of the wings. A first and second cavity to receive locking strips are formed in the first face of the first and second portion, respectively. A plug is formed at the junction of the first and second portions such that the plug separates the first cavity from the second cavity to enable locking strips to abut against the plug. The plug exerts force to enhance the seal of the glass in the channel.

  • Patent number: 4812150
Abstract: An optical fibre is provided with a coating by coating the fibre (1) with a coating material (4) on-line with the fibre drawing process (2) and employing a laser beam (6) to locally heat the coating material whereby to change its physical or chemical properties. Metallic glass coated fibres, useful for hermeticity and sensor applications, can thus be achieved in multikilometer lengths by fusing metallic glass forming alloy coatings to a fibre. Alternatively, polymer coatings may be cured by laser beam local heating.

  • Patent number: 4811757
Abstract: A compressor discharge valve assembly including a valve seat, a valve cage, and an annular ring-type valve operating therebetween. The valve cage includes a recess into which the valve retracts when in an open position, or in an alternative embodiment, the valve cage includes a lip portion for shielding the valve. In either embodiment, a reduction in valve flutter and the noise, known as chatter, which results from valve flutter is realized. The valve in alternative embodiments also includes an annular dished portion oriented toward the valve seat for directing the flow of discharge gas smoothly from the compressor and thereby further reducing valve chatter.

  • Patent number: 4809419
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for reconditioning a draft gear assembly friction clutch mechanism. The apparatus comprises a generally rectangular substantial flat plate member having at least one protuberance extending outwardly from one side of such plate member. The friction clutch mechanism reconditioning method includes the steps of removing each component of the friction clutch mechanism from an open end of the draft gear housing. Then engaging the plate member with an outer surface of one of the outer stationary plates of the friction clutch mechanism in a position such that the protuberance extends into a recess on the outer surface. Thereafter reassembling the friction clutch mechanism into the open end of the draft gear housing in a position such that an opposite surface of the plate member engages a portion of a wall surface of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4805986
Abstract: A method of producing polarization-maintaining single-mode optical waveguides is provided wherein the preform from which the optical waveguide is produced consists of a tube, a rod of core and cladding material centrally disposed in said tube, and two differently doped pairs of filler rods disposed about said rod, the two rods of each pair being disposed diametrically opposed to each other with respect to said rod. Maximum polarization maintenance of the optical waveguide being produced is achieved by choosing the diameter ratios so that each filler rod rests against the central rod, against the inside wall of the tube, and directly against the two filler rods of the respective other pair.

  • Patent number: 4803666
Abstract: A method and system for geophysical exploration including obtaining, processing, displaying and interpreting seismic data. Seismic energy is imparted into the earth's subterranean formation along at least two linear independent lines of action in a seismic survey. At least two linearly independent components of the seismic wave energy imparted along each line of action are detected within the seismic survey. A concord of seismic signals is produced from the seismic wave energy detected for selected combinations of receiver and source locations. An orientation module operates on the concord of the seismic signals so as to generate synthetic concords of seismic signals so as to focus on a particular component of the seismic wave energy in order to infer the geologic characteristics of the earth's subterranean formations.
