Abstract: An orthosis for increasing a range of motion of an ankle is disclosed. In various embodiments, the orthosis includes a frame including a ball shell and a heel shell; a first actuator disposed on the ball shell and configured to apply a first force against a ball region of a foot, resulting in a moment being applied at the ankle; and a first rod connecting the heel shell and the ball shell, the first rod being slidably connected to at least one of the heel shell or the ball shell. In various embodiments, a second actuator is disposed on the heel shell and configured to apply a second force against a heel region of the foot. In various embodiments, a calf shell is configured to support a calf region of a leg that is connected to the ankle.

Abstract: Gallium nitride based devices and, more particularly to the generation of holes in gallium nitride based devices lacking p-type doping, and their use in light emitting diodes and lasers, both edge emitting and vertical emitting. By tailoring the intrinsic design, a wide range of wavelengths can be emitted from near-infrared to mid ultraviolet, depending upon the design of the adjacent cross-gap recombination zone. The innovation also provides for novel circuits and unique applications, particularly for water sterilization.

Abstract: A sensor apparatus is provided. Multiple opposite and self-powered sensors are provided in another aspect of the present apparatus. A further aspect employs a sensor apparatus including a first pair of flexible piezoelectric sensors attached to opposite sides of an exterior surface of a workpiece and at least a second pair of flexible piezoelectric sensors attached to opposite sides of the exterior surface of the workpiece. Abstract: A processing unit and a method of operating a processing unit. In an embodiment, the processing unit comprises a SIMON block cipher for transforming plaintext data into encrypted data. Abstract: A centrifugal bioreactor includes a turntable assembly, an electric motor coupled to the turntable assembly, and a replaceable rotor assembly coupled to the turntable assembly. The replaceable rotor assembly includes a plurality of reaction chambers that house cell cultures. A fresh medium tank holds fresh medium for the cell cultures, a spent medium tank holds a first portion of spent medium produced by the cell cultures, and an inoculation tank combines the fresh medium from the fresh medium tank and a second portion of the spent medium. A gas exchanger exposes the fresh medium and the second portion of the spent medium to gas. Additionally, a first pump supplies the fresh medium and the second portion of the spent medium to the plurality of the reaction chambers, and a second pump discard the first portion of the spent medium to the spent medium tank.

Abstract: Nanoparticle-fibrous membrane composites are provided as tunable interfacial scaffolds for flexible chemical sensors and biosensors by assembling gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) in a fibrous membrane. The gold nanoparticles are functionalized with organic, polymeric and/or biological molecules. The fibrous membranes may include different filter papers, with one example featuring a multilayered fibrous membrane consisting of a cellulose nanofiber (CN) top layer, an electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibrous midlayer (or alternate material), and a nonwoven polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibrous support layer, with the nanoparticles provided on the fibrous membranes through interparticle molecular/polymeric linkages and nanoparticle-nanofibrous interactions. Molecular linkers may be employed to tune hydrogen bonding and electrostatic and/or hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions to provide sensor specificity to gases or liquids. The sensors act as chemiresistor-type sensors.

Abstract: A UV-curable and recyclable thermoset shape memory polymer is provided. The polymer includes a vitrimer-based monomer and a photoinitiator. The vitrimer-based monomer includes a first unit rendering a high chain stiffness upon polymerization of the monomer, and a second photopolymerizable unit for photopolymerization of the monomer under a UV irradiation.
