  • Patent number: 9213336
Abstract: A computer implemented method for guiding an under-actuated marine surface vessel in tracking a desired trajectory comprises expressing a predetermined vessel trajectory as a set of straight line segments, determining a desired current line segment, and determining the vessel's current position. A cross-track error and the derivative of the cross-track error are then determined. Next, a radius R of the line-of-sight (LOS) circle using a newly introduced exponential function is determined. Intersection points M and N between the LOS circle and the current desired line segment are determined. A desired heading angle is determined as the angle between the line of sight and a predetermined fixed reference line. A drift detection algorithm is built into the proposed guidance scheme to detect situations whereby the ship moves parallel to its desired trajectory for an extended period of time without being able to correct for the cross track error.

  • Patent number: 9206616
Abstract: Negative stiffness systems and methods for seismic protection of a structure is described. A system can include a negative stiffness device having a first linkage pivotably connected to an anchor frame at a first pivot point and pivotably connected the movement frame at a second pivot point. The negative stiffness device can include a spring having a first end operably coupled to the anchor frame and a second end operably coupled to a movement frame. In a rest state, the spring can be compressed to exert a preload force to the first linkage and the anchor frame and not displace the first linkage and the movement frame. In an engaged state, the spring can be configured to apply a force to the first linkage such that the movement frame is displaced in a same lateral direction of a seismic load. • Patent number: 9209246
Abstract: A gated microelectronic device is provided that has a source with a source ohmic contact with the source characterized by a source dopant type and concentration. A drain with a drain ohmic contact with the drain characterized by a drain dopant type and concentration. An intermediate channel portion characterized by a channel portion dopant type and concentration. An insulative dielectric is in contact with the channel portion and overlaid in turn by a gate. A gate contact applies a gate voltage bias to control charge carrier accumulation and depletion in the underlying channel portion. This channel portion has a dimension normal to the gate which is fully depleted in the off-state. The dopant type is the same across the source, drain and the channel portion of the device. The device on-state current is determined by the doping and, unlike a MOSFET, is not directly proportional to device capacitance.

  • Patent number: 9207122
Abstract: An apparatus for performing Raman spectral analysis of a sample is described, comprising a coherent light source, an first optical chain to direct the coherent light to impinge on the sample, a second optical chain to direct the scattered light onto a diffraction grating, and a third optical chain to direct the diffracted light onto detection array. The diffraction grating is a plurality of alternating-slope stairsteps, wherein the portion of the step disposed parallel to the base of the diffraction grating is disposed so as to be orthogonal to the path of the scattered light from the second optical chain. The zeroth-order fringe is selected by a slit and directed onto camera. The resultant interferogram is Fourier transformed to produce a representation of the Raman spectrum.

  • Patent number: PP26211
Abstract: The physical manner in which the inflorescences on our new cultivar are displayed is unique as the flower heads are held erect on the rapidly elongating peduncles in the spring at nearly 90 degrees. When the telescoped vegetative bracts that protected the over-wintering flower buds have fallen, the rapidly growing peduncles elongate upward and the rapidly growing narrow pink-red floral bracts which are lightly attached at their apex enlarge upward until, with further growth, the floral bracts expand at an increased angle and look like butterflies perched on the vertical peduncles. The deep-cup shape of the floral bracts is unique among the comparative pink/red bracted clones of C. kousa ‘Rosea’, ‘Radiant Rose’, and ‘Heart Throb’ in the trade It's floral bracts are larger and darker than the C. kousa in the trade and holds its color longer than those of C. kousa which usually turn white.
