    Abstract: Methods are provided for making ceramic preforms having two-dimensional interconnected channels therein. The methods include (i) positioning a sacrificial material having a selected profile within a bed of ceramic powder; (ii) compacting the bed of ceramic powder to form a compacted mass; (iii) heating the compacted mass to thermally transform the sacrificial materials into a fluid without cracking the compacted mass; and (iv) removing the fluid from the compacted mass, thereby leaving a two-dimensional network of interconnected channels having the selected profile of the sacrificial material within the compacted mass. Ceramic preforms are also provided which include a compacted mass of ceramic powder and two-dimensional interconnected channels therein.

    Abstract: A real-time ophthalmoscope system for imaging an eye includes a wide field scanning light ophthalmoscope (SLO) configured for wide field imaging of the eye. The system also includes a small field SLO configured for high resolution imaging of the eye. A 2D tracking minor electrically coupled to a computer, and a 2D steering minor electrically coupled to the computer, are both disposed in an optical path between the small field SLO and the eye. The system is configured to acquire a plurality of small field images at a plurality of locations on the eye as defined by the 2D steering minor, each of the small field images is stabilized for a motion of the eye by the 2D tracking minor. A method for imaging of the eye is also described.

    Abstract: This invention relates to nucleic acids, reagents and methods for detecting Rifampicin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a sample from a subject. In one aspect, the invention provides methods of detecting Rifampicin resistant M. tuberculosis in a sample comprising (a) amplifying a nucleic acid containing the rifampicin resistance determining region (RRDR) of the rpoB gene in a sample to provide an amplified nucleic acid; (b) probing the amplified nucleic acid with at least three molecular beacon probes for an RRDR mutant target; (c) conducting melting temperature (Tm) analysis to determine a Tm value for each probe; and (d) comparing the Tm value for each probe with a Tm value for a wild-type RRDR region, wherein a Tm value for at least one of the molecular beacon probes that is greater than the Tm value for the wildtype RRDR indicates the presence of rifampicin resistant M. tuberculosis in the sample.

    Abstract: A targeted osmotic lysis (TOL) of tumor cells that over-express voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) has been developed that uses a combined therapy of a drug that blocks sodium, potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (Na+, K+-ATPase) that is then followed by an activation of VGSCs, for example, by electrical or pharmacological stimulation. Activation of VGSCs conducts sodium into the cancer cells in much greater amounts than non-cancer cells. Water follows this sodium gradient into the cancer cells, causing swelling and lysis. Because non-cancerous cells do not over-express VGSCs, less sodium and less water will enter the cells, and the non-cancerous cells will not lyse. This method is applicable to all cells that over-express VGSCs, including, but not limited to, highly invasive breast cancer, prostate cancer, small cell lung cancer, non-small cell lung carcinoma, lymphoma, mesothelioma, neuroblastoma, and cervical cancer.

    Abstract: The time/temperature history of a food tray or pouch heated by microwave energy applied through a waveguide can be accurately assessed on positioning and stabilizing a shielded data logger in an orientation where the base of the data logger is located generally close to zero depth (near the side wall) and the tip projects to the cold spot in the tray or pouch. A frame can be used to assure stability of orientation in a pouch while bracing can be used to assure stability in a tray. The properly configured food tray or pouch can serve as an accurate witness device for food items being processed in a similar manner under microwave heating for, e.g., sterilization or pasteurization.

    Abstract: Improved methods of native chemical ligation are provided. The methods involve reacting a thioacid (e.g. a peptide thioacid) with an aziridinyl compound (e.g. an aziridinyl peptide) under mild conditions without the use of protecting groups, and without requiring that a cysteine residue be present in the ligation product. Initial coupling of the thioacid and the aziridinyl compound yields a ligation product which contains an aziridinyl ring. Subsequent opening of the aziridinyl ring (e.g. via a nucleophilic attack) produces a linearized and modified ligation product.

    Abstract: A Dye Sensitized Photoelectrosynthesis Cell (DSPEC) splits water with visible light using a derivatized, core/shell nanostructured photoanode with the core having a high surface area conductive metal oxide film—such as nanoITO (indium tin oxide) or nanoATO (antimony tin oxide)—coated with a thin outer shell of, for example, TiO2 formed by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). A “chromophore-catalyst assembly” 1, [(PO3H2)2bpy)2Ru(4-Mebpy-4-bimpy)Ru(tpy)(OH2)]4+, which combines both light absorber and water oxidation catalyst in a single molecule, is attached to the TiO2 shell. Visible photolysis of the resulting core/shell/assembly structure with a Pt cathode results in water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen.
