Abstract: The present invention relates to radiation hardening by design (RHBD), which employs layout and circuit techniques to mitigate the damaging effects of ionizing radiation. Reverse body biasing (RBB) of N-type metal-oxide-semiconductor (NMOS) transistors may be used to counteract the effects of trapped positive charges in isolation oxides due to ionizing radiation. In a traditional MOS integrated circuit, input/output (I/O) circuitry may be powered using an I/O power supply voltage, and core circuitry may be powered using a core power supply voltage, which is between the I/O power supply voltage and ground. However, in one embodiment of the present invention, the core circuitry is powered using a voltage difference between the core power supply voltage and the I/O power supply voltage. The bodies of NMOS transistors in the core circuitry are coupled to ground; therefore, a voltage difference between the core power supply voltage and ground provides RBB.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for identifying a target nucleotide sequence. This method involves forming a ligation product on a target nucleotide sequence in a ligase detection reaction mixture, amplifying the ligation product to form an amplified ligation product in a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) mixture, detecting the amplified ligation product, and identifying the target nucleotide sequence. Such coupling of the ligase detection reaction and the polymerase chain reaction permits multiplex detection of nucleic acid sequence differences.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for inserting content into messages being sent between systems or networks. A router according to one embodiment automatically inserts new content within a received data packet. Before insertion, the router may determine that the received data packet corresponds to a certain type of message such as a web page, an e-mail, or a text message. The router may also determine whether the packet includes a predetermined insertion point in the corresponding message. The predetermined insertion point may be, for example, an end of the web page, e-mail, or text message. The type of message and/or the subject matter of the inserted content may be based on user selectable preferences. In one embodiment, a plurality of packets are received before the new content is inserted into the message to improve reliability and/or allow message decoding.

Abstract: The present invention features additions of nano-structures to interconnect conductor fine particles (spheres) to: (1) reduce thermal interface resistance by using thermal interposers that have high thermal conductivity nano-structures at their surfaces; (2) improve the anisotropic conductive adhesive interconnection conductivity with microcircuit contact pads; and (3) allow lower compression forces to be applied during the microcircuit fabrication processes which then results in reduced deflection or circuit damage. When pressure is applied during fabrication to spread and compress anisotropic conductive adhesive and the matrix of interconnect particles and circuit conductors, the nano-structures mesh and compress into a more uniform connection than current technology provides, thereby eliminating voids, moisture and other contaminants, increasing the contact surfaces for better electrical and thermal conduction.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for detecting a material in an object to be analyzed in a radiographic imaging system. The method includes providing wide-field illumination of an object with partially monochromatic x-ray radiation from a divergent source without restrictively collimating the x-ray radiation. The x-ray radiation scattered by the object outside of a predetermined range of angles defined about a characteristic angle is rejected. The characteristic angle is a scattering angle about which a material of the object coherently scatters the incident x-ray radiation. In addition, the method includes the step of detecting coherently-scattered radiation, which is the x-ray radiation diffracted by the object within the predetermined range of angles defined about the characteristic angle.

Abstract: Methods are provided for mechanically chopping nanotubes and other nanoscale fibrous materials. The method includes forming a macroscale article which include the nanoscale fibers, and then mechanically cutting the macroscale article into a finely divided form. In one embodiment, these steps are repeated. The nanoscale fibers may be carbon nanotubes, which optionally are aligned in the macroscale article. The macroscale article may be in the form of or include one or more buckypapers. In one embodiment, the macroscale article further includes a solid matrix material in which the nanoscale fibers are contained or dispersed. The forming step can include making a suspension of nanoscale fibers dispersed in a liquid medium and then solidifying the liquid medium to form the macroscale article. After the mechanical cutting step, the medium can be dissolved or melted to enable separation of the chopped nanoscale fibers from the medium.
