Abstract: System and methods for optimizing communications between an RFID reader and a population of tags are described. To minimize the amount of data exchanges, the reader and tags use non-sequential bit string or byte masking. In non-sequential bit string masking, the reader transmits an interrogation mask having a plurality of non-sequential sub-masks to the tags. During subsequent collection of the identification sequence, the reader and tags only exchange the non-masked bit positions. The interrogation mask can be determined using superposition processing, historical tendencies, or known identification and/or subset of identification ranges. During superposition processing, the reader determines whether a bit position contains a single value or multiple values for tags in the tag population. If the bit position contains a single value, the bit position is designated as masked. If the bit position contains multiple values, the bit position is designated as non-masked.
Abstract: A communication system comprises a wireless switch, a plurality of wired access ports and a plurality of wireless access ports. The plurality of wired access ports are coupled to the wireless switch via a wired connection and are configured to receive data over the wired connection and over a wireless connection. The plurality of wireless access ports are configured to receive data over the wireless connection from the wireless access port and to send data over the wireless connection to the wired access port. The wireless access ports are further configured to receive and encapsulate first wireless data packets in to first wired data packets based on a wired transmission protocol and encapsulate the first wired data packets into second wireless data packets based on a wireless transmission protocol.
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses to improve an interface between customers and products in warehouse, shopping, and additional environments, including an improved interface with items associated with RFID tags, are described. In an aspect, a product database associated with a merchant is downloaded from a computer system into a mobile device. The downloaded product database is stored. A user interacts with data of the downloaded product database on the mobile device. In a further aspect, a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is read by the mobile device to determine an identification number corresponding to the RFID tag. The identification number of the RFID tag is transmitted to the computer system. A response from the computer system is received that includes information regarding an item associated with the RFID tag.
Abstract: Location of a mobile unit is determined by a combined probability, derived from a first probability for possible locations based on a current sample of radio signal characteristics and a second probability that a unit has moved from a prior location or probable location to each possible location.
Abstract: A method of maintaining connectivity and synchronization of data from a first application resident in a first mobile computer to a second application resident in a second computer wherein the data is transmitted over a data communications network including a plurality of stationary access points, determining, in said first mobile computer, that communications between the first mobile computer and the second computer has been impeded, and that association with a different access point or use of a different radio channel should be attempted in order to continue communications; storing and queuing the messages while a new link is established; and re-establishing a link between first and second virtual sockets in the respective computers in order to continue a session between the first and second applications in the first and second computer respectively.
Abstract: An earphone jack, comprising an attachment assembly including a pin connector for insertion into an earpiece receptacle of a mobile unit, a cord, a portion of the cord being molded to the attachment assembly, the cord being conductively connected to the pin connector and an earphone connector coupled to the cord.

Abstract: Partial decode results that successfully decode a subset of bar code symbol components and a quality indicator associated with each component are stored. These partial decode results are combined based on the quality indicator to achieve an improved decode of the symbol.
Abstract: A portable/handheld device is provided having a processing module configured to selectively operate a reading mode selected from a far-field mode and a near-field mode, and a directional antenna array coupled to the processing module. The directional antenna array includes a first antenna element configured to radiate electromagnetic (EM) radiation in a far-field, and a second antenna element coupled to the first antenna element. The second antenna element is configured to radiate EM radiation in a near-field. The second antenna element includes an antenna transducer configured to selectively cancel far-field EM radiation from the first antenna element. A method of reading inductively coupled radio frequency identification (RFID) tags is also provided having the steps of scanning at least one frequency band to detect a RFID tag, and selectively radiating one of a near-field electromagnetic (EM) field and a far-field EM field based on the detected RFID tag.

Abstract: A programmable mobile terminal which includes a thumb wheel for selecting among a plurality of functions executable by the mobile terminal. The programmable mobile terminal allows a user to employ the same hand that is holding the mobile terminal to scroll through and select a function among a plurality of functions via the thumb wheel. The wheel portion of thumb wheel is rotated either clockwise or counter clockwise by the user's thumb or other finger to scroll a screen cursor through the functions and once the screen cursor of the mobile terminal is positioned at a desired function, the user can depress the wheel portion in a transaxial direction with the same thumb or finger to select the desired function. Also, the programmable mobile terminal allows a user to scan bar code information and use the thumb wheel for selecting among a plurality of functions relating to the scanned bar code information.
Abstract: An automatic provisioning methodology for a mobile computing device in a wireless network is disclosed herein. The mobile computing device can support open communication with a wireless switch, which is configured to function as a load request proxy between the mobile computing device and a mobile services system on the wireless network. The mobile services system sends provisioning data to the wireless switch (using secure communications), which in turn sends the provisioning data to the mobile computing device. The mobile computing device can then use the provisioning data to configure its software applications, security settings, and the like.
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses for radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled devices, are described herein. In an aspect, a method of assembling an RFID enabled device includes providing an antenna on a surface of a substrate, providing a land pattern for an electrical circuit, and mounting the electrical circuit on the substrate, wherein the electrical circuit is electrically isolated from the antenna.
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for employing a housing as part of a hand held scanner as to increase utility and add ruggedness. The housing comprises an upper top housing and lower bottom housing, with the top housing comprising a set of accessory rails adapted to accept accessories associated with the hand hold scanner, and the lower housing including an adjustable mass element for balancing a weight of the scanner. Also, top housing can be adapted to accept various key pad configurations via a transitional mounting frame, and the bottom housing can hold a stylus. A bar code scanner system employing such housing can incorporate displays located on various sides of the housing and/or key pads to facilitate a reading from the scanner at slanted angles.
Abstract: A taut, torsional flexure is used in a compact drive for scanning light and is of beneficial use in a lightweight, compact image projection module, especially for mounting in a housing having a light-transmissive window, the module being operative for causing selected pixels in a raster pattern to be illuminated to produce an image of high resolution of VGA quality in color.
Abstract: A power pack with human interface devices that includes a power pack housing, which is detachably interfaced to a portable device. The power pack includes a power source internal to the housing for providing power, a light source internal to the housing for producing a light signal associated with a status, which light signal is viewable external to the housing, and an audio source internal to the housing for producing an audio signal associated with the status. The power pack interfaces electrically to the portable device to provide power thereto, and receive therefrom control signals associated with the status, which control signals activate at least one of the light source and audio source according to the status.
