Abstract: The exemplary bar code reader has an auto-focusing component positioned between a photo-detector array and an object having target indicia. The auto-focusing component has a lens system for focusing the target indicia at an imaging plane that generally co-incides with a plane of the photo-detector array. An electromagnetic coil actuator is coupled to an adjustable aperture such that activation of the coil actuator moves the adjustable aperture into and out of the imaging field of view to adjust a focusing on the target indicia. The autofocus component is fixed when the moveable aperture is within the field of view for focusing on objects close to the reader and when the aperture is removed, the autofocus is effective in imaging objects at a greater distance from the reader.
Abstract: A solid-state imager is mounted at a point-of-transaction workstation for capturing images of one- and two-dimensional indicia and is operated at high speed to resist image blurring due to relative movement between the target and the imager. Dedicated hardware assistance and computation resources are allocated to decode multiple, continuous and simultaneous video streams from multiple imagers at the workstation.

Abstract: An encoding method comprises generating a character map of an alphanumeric character string, identifying runs of like character type symbols in sequential positions, and removing the runs of character type symbols from the character map. The center for the center infix run is determined, and the characters of each character type are encoded into binary encoded substrings. A decoding method comprises parsing the one or more run fields in the alphanumeric header to determine a number of characters of each type of a plurality of character types represented in the binary encoded string, generating a character map having a string of character type symbols representing the binary encoded string, including determining a reduced character map, centering the character type symbols for a center infix run about the center of the reduced character map, completing a final character map, and decoding each binary encoded string.
Abstract: A technique to manage wireless wide area network bandwidth constraints in a communication network includes; prioritizing client activities in a serving access point; detecting that wired domain access is inactive while wireless wide area domain access is active; and utilizing an available bandwidth of the wireless aide area domain access for the highest priority client activities. The lower priority client activities can be address in various different ways including transferring to other available wired access.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for using in an imaging scanner. The apparatus includes an illumination source, a solid-state imager, a liquid crystal device, a lens system, and a decoding circuitry. The liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal material sandwiched between two parallel plate structures. The lens system is operative to focus light reflected from the target object onto the array of photosensitive elements in the solid-state imager through the liquid crystal device. The decoding circuitry is operative to decode a barcode on the target object from the image captured by the solid-state imager.
Abstract: Methods and system are provided for delivering a software package to particular wireless computing devices (WCDs). The system includes logical sites (LSs), WCDs, and a Network Operation Center (NOC) communicatively coupled to the LSs by a network. The NOC includes a device management module (DMM) and a second DCP server. The DMM is designed to: determine that particular ones of the WCDs are currently located at and associated with a first LS based on registration information for each of the WCDs; determine characteristics of the particular ones of the WCDs currently located at and associated with the first LS; and determine particular software packages appropriate for the particular ones of the WCDs based on the characteristics of the particular ones of the WCDs currently located at the first LS. The second DCP server designed to send the particular software packages to the first DCP server.
Abstract: An arrangement for, and a method of, reducing image blur in response to motion of an imaging reader for imaging symbols to be read, employs an illuminating light assembly supported by the reader for illuminating a symbol with illumination light having an intensity level over an illumination time period, a solid-state imager supported by the reader and having an array of image sensors for capturing return light from the symbol over a field of view over an exposure time period, a motion sensor, such as a gyroscope or an accelerometer, supported by the reader for detecting the motion of the reader, and for generating a motion signal in response to the detected motion of the reader, and a controller operatively connected to the motion sensor, for dynamically controlling at least one of the time periods and the intensity level in real time in response to the motion signal to optimally image the symbol.
Abstract: Image enhancement of symbol targets and non-symbol targets is performed based on the distance to the target, and optionally on the type of target being imaged, by an imaging system to improve reader performance. An axicon and other lenses are preferred to capture light from the target.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for adjusting the electromagnetic fields produced by telephones or other mobile devices capable of wireless communication. A wireless communication device includes a substrate having a ground plane. An antenna is coupled to the ground plane, and electrical currents are produced in the ground plane during operation of the antenna. A switchable counterpoise circuit that includes a conducting element and an inductor in series is provided on the substrate. The switchable counterpoise is selectively coupled to the ground plane based upon an operating mode of the wireless communications device, thereby adjusting the electrical currents flowing in the ground plane when the counterpoise is active. The changes in the ground plane currents can produce adjustments in the electromagnetic fields produced by the device, thereby improving hearing aid compatibility (HAC) of the device.
