  • Publication number: 20040259725
Abstract: A method for forming a supported metal-containing powder. The method comprises forming a dispersion of a particulate support in a solution, which comprises a solvent and a dissolved metal. Heat is removed from the dispersion to precipitate the dissolved metal from the solution onto the particulate support. Preferably, enough heat is removed to freeze the solution. Also, the heat is removed is preferably removed from the dispersion by contacting a container containing the dispersion with a cryogenic liquid. After precipitating the dissolved metal onto the particulate support, the particulate support is separated from the solution, preferably by freeze-drying, to yield the supported metal-containing powder, which comprises the particulate support and a precipitated metal thereon.

  • Patent number: 6833276
Abstract: Sensors for determining the presence and concentration of bio-molecules in a biological sample are provided in the form of polymer brushes, which comprise a substrate having a surface that is modified with a water-dispersible or water-soluble polymer segment having functional groups that bind probes. The method of synthesis of such sensors preferably includes use of controlled free radical polymerization techniques, and in particular the use of an iniferter initiator, which allows for controlled architecture polymers to modify the surface of the substrate. In this manner functional groups in the polymer chain are removed from the surface, which allows for solution chemistry to be more realistically reproduced with the benefits of a solid bound probe.

  • Patent number: 6830663
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for depositing a radial profile of a target material onto a substrate. The method comprises directing one or more target materials toward a substrate, blocking some predetermined portion of the target material with at least a first shutter so that it does not strike the substrate, and rotating the substrate relative to the first shutter while the target material is directed toward the substrate so that a radial profile is formed on the substrate. In on embodiment, the substrate is rotated, and the first shutter does not rotate. In another embodiment, the first shutter rotates and the substrate does not rotate. The method permits a radial thickness or composition gradient on the substrate to be formed. The method may also include using one or more contact masks placed on the substrate during the deposition in order to mask off particular portions of the substrate during the deposition process.
