  • Patent number: 5960394
Abstract: A word recognition system is disclosed for converting spoken utterances into either text or commands. The system runs on a platform capable of running a plurality applications. Text and commands are sent from a word recognition application to one or more user applications. In addition, information pertaining to the state of the user applications is sent back to the word recognition application. Word recognition probabilities are modified based the information received from the user applications. As a result, the probabilities of recognizing a spoken utterance as a particular command will be greater when that command is active in the user application then when it is not active. Also, text strings will be assigned higher probabilities when they are appropriate for the present state of the user application.

  • Patent number: 5957865
Abstract: A flexible catheter guidewire that comprises an elongate flexible core wire, a cylindrical, thin-walled hollow tube, and a coil spring. The core wire consists of a main section, a tapered section, and a flattened tip. The main section of the core wire has a predetermined uniform diameter. The tapered section of the core wire has a progressively reduced outer diameter. The flattened tip has a substantially rectangular cross-section. The flattened tip has a first end that is attached to the tapered section of the core wire and a second end. The flattened tip decreases in thickness from the first end of the flattened tip to the second end of the flattened tip. The hollow tube is disposed around the tapered section of core wire. The hollow tube has a substantially uniform inner diameter. A gap is formed between the inner surface of the hollow tube and the outer surface of the tapered section. A coil spring constructed of a radiopaque material is attached to the core wire and is disposed around the flattened tip.

  • Patent number: 5957237
Abstract: A collapsible step assembly has upper and lower steps, and a housing which mounts below the door of a vehicle. The steps and housing are interconnected by pivotally mounted linkages. A pivot rod extends transversely through the housing with a linkage fastened to each end. A link arm is connected to the rod with a universal ball joint. The link arm is swivelly mounted to a drive gear with teeth which extend circumferentially along an arcuate edge portion. The drive gear is pivotally mounted to the housing and engages a drive gear extending from a motor. The drive gear rotates the pivot rod and, hence, the steps between retracted and extended positions. A flat outer edge of the drive gear abuts a mechanical stop in the extended position. When the user steps on the steps while they are extended, the stop will resist countertorque on the pivot rod from being applied through the gears to the motor.

  • Patent number: 5957903
Abstract: Using a variable stiffness guidewire to cross a stenosed region of a patient's vasculature by advancing the distal end of the guidewire to the stenosed region, reducing the flexibility of the distal end of the guidewire, and further advancing the distal end through and past the stenosed region of the lumen. The variable stiffness guidewire has a longitudinally movable core member with a proximal end and a shapable distal end, a compressible body is slidably mounted on the core member, with one end of the compressible body secured to the end of the core member, and a tubular support member is disposed about the core member with a distal end that abuts the proximal end of the compressible body. The guidewire further comprises a tensioning means at the proximal end to move the core member longitudinally with respect to the tubular support member so as to compress and reduce the flexibility of the compressible body.

  • Patent number: 5957824
Abstract: Methods of making a container strip in the form of a chain of interconnected preopened bags with openings preferably having longitudinal dimensions of at least about 1/64 inch is disclosed. The container strip provides greatly enhanced facility for bag registration and opening during packaging operations utilizing the improved container strip. Processes of forming a chain of preopened bags are also disclosed. Face and back plastic webs are fed along individual paths of travel to a common path. In one embodiment the webs are differentially tensioned while in their independent paths by stretching the face web more than the back web such that the face web will retract longitudinally more than the back web upon release of the web tension. While so tensioned edge seals are formed between the webs to convert the webs into a tube and longitudinally spaced transverse seals are formed between the webs to delineate bottoms of bags.

  • Patent number: 5959730
Abstract: An improved method for use with an open-path fast Fourier infrared spectrometer performs real-time, spectral alignment on measured interferograms to reduce measuremental errors. The improved method includes the step of selecting a plurality of water-vapor lines in a defined spectral region and comparing the centerline of these measured water vapor lines to a reference library. From these comparisons, the spectrometer calculates correction factors to apply to the spectrometer bandwidth.
