Abstract: A new electrochemical method for determining dissolved oxygen concentration is developed. It employs cobalt based oxide or complex to modify a conductive electrode surface. This method can be applied to determine dissolved oxygen in regard to medical and environmental demands. The chemical formula of the cobalt based oxide or complexes can be shown as CoxOy or CoaLb. Both “x” and “a” represent the number of cobalt atom; while “y” and “b” represent the number of oxygen atom and the number of coordinating ligand, respectively. For instance, the best known example of cobalt oxide is CO3O4, and the best known examples of cobalt complexes are cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPC) and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12), or other macrocyclic complexes with a metallic nucleus of cobalt. The present invention determines the concentration of dissolved oxygen in solution in potentiostatic mode with three electrodes. As a result, the dissolved oxygen can be determined between 0.0V and ?0.3V vs.
Abstract: A manually operated brushless DC motor is disclosed herein, which is an educational electric motor and can overcome the shortcoming hard to visualize the movement of a motor due to the high-speed rotation of the motor. The manually operated brushless DC motor according to the present invention provides two switches to replace the brushes used in a conventional motor. Users/learners have to alternatively press the switches to complete a closed circuit and drive the motor to rotate. Only when the rotor rotates in synchronism with the pressing rate of the switches, the rotor accelerates. Otherwise the rotation speed of the rotor decreases. The manually operated brushless DC motor provides the users/learners with the opportunity of viewing the rotor rotating in a slow motion, and the experience of manually operating the motor.
Abstract: A surface acoustic wave substrate includes: a diamond layer; a piezoelectric layer of aluminum nitride; and a titanium nitride-based buffer layer sandwiched between the diamond layer and the piezoelectric layer. The titanium nitride-based buffer layer includes a graded structure or includes a first sub-layer of titanium and a second sub-layer of titanium nitride sandwiched between the first sub-layer and the piezoelectric layer.
Abstract: This invention proposes a novel technique for fabricating a gelatin micro pattern for cell culture. The gelatin micro pattern is formed by photolithography and then crosslinked with a crosslinking agent such as glutaraldehyde. The gelatin micro pattern can be used as an excellent cell culture platform for in-vitro observations of a certain cluster of living cells or even a single living cell.
Abstract: A manufacturing method for ambient temperature self-curable system of water borne based polymeric ink is disclosed by using a carboxyl group containing water borne-based polymer as a base of polymeric dye and reacting the isocyanate or epoxy group of this polymer with dye to form a water borne-based polymeric dye, then neutralizing this water borne-based polymeric dye to form a water borne polymeric dye dispersion, adding a latent curing agent to get a single-pack ambient temperature self-curable system of water borne polymeric ink. This new stable water borne-based polymeric ink becomes water-resistant and solvent-proof after drying at ambient temperature due to a curing reaction takes place between aziridine of curing agent and carboxylic acid of polymeric dye when its pH drops to and below 7.0 on drying. The application of this self-curable water borne polymeric ink has neither organic solvent emission nor energy needed for curing.
Abstract: A miniature antenna for various wireless communication applications in the ISM band around 2.45 GHz is provided. The miniature antenna mainly contains a bended planar notch antenna with a metallic stub as a capacitive load. A microstrip feed line is also appropriately bended so as to achieve a significant reduction of the antenna's dimension. The miniature antenna could be implemented using simple manufacturing processes on a common circuit board without mechanical work or advanced processes such as low temperature co-fired ceramics. The antenna has a comparable performance to those antennas having much larger dimensions.
Abstract: A new electrochemical sensor for determining hydrogen peroxide concentration having a mixed-valence metal oxide of MxOy deposited on an electrode surface thereof is disclosed, wherein M is a transition metal and has two or more than two valences. MxOy, for example, is M3O4 where M is Mn, Fe, Co or Pb, Tb4O7 or Pr6O11. Further, this invention also discloses an electrochemical sensor for determining a concentration of a hydrogen peroxide precursor, wherein a catalyst is immobilized in the matrix or on the surface of the mixed-valence metal oxide on the electrode. In a typical biochemical system, the catalyst can be a glucose oxidase and blood glucose is catalyzed to form hydrogen peroxide, so that the concentration of blood glucose is determined.
Abstract: A tri-leaflet heart valve includes an annular valve base with an inner surface forming an orifice through which blood flows from the upstream side to the downstream side. Three protruding hinges, each with concave sockets on opposite sides, are formed on the inner surface. Each hinge has a downstream face and an upstream face connected by a ridge. Three leaflets are respectively arranged between adjacent hinges. Each leaflet has round pivots on both sides that rest inside the concave sockets, allowing the leaflets to freely rotate in the annular valve base. When the leaflets are subject to a positive pressure from the blood flow, the leaflets are pushed open and allow a central flow. When the leaflets are subject to a negative pressure, the leaflets are closed to occlude the blood flow.
