  • Patent number: 3979056
Abstract: An indicating type timing device for use in fast food preparation is provided to time cooking processes in which a food product is cooked by immersing it in a heated cooking medium. Since various food products, such as french fries, fried onion rings, fried fish, and the like require different cooking times, the unit is adapted to properly time the cooking of these different products, irrespective of the initial temperature of the food product or the cooking time. The timing device uses a voltage controlled oscillator and associated counting circuit. The base frequency of the oscillator is set by the charge on the capacitor in one of a selected series of RC timing circuits. A thermistor continually measures the temperature of the cooking medium (such as shortening) and produces a voltage that varies the base frequency of the oscillator (increasing the frequency for increased measured temperatures).

  • Patent number: 3968682
Abstract: A probe arrangement and set of tubes for a penetrometer. The probe is formed from a sleeve and a point which comprises a central part and a peripheral part which are connected by a cotter pin. The set of tubes comprises a central rod, which is attached to the central part of the point, and two concentric tubes around the rod. The arrangement may be used for making four independent measurements. The peripheral part of the point is connected to the sleeve in such manner that on holding the outer tube and applying a driving force to the central rod, the cotter pin shears and the central part of the point travels downwards so that hard ground may be studied.

  • Patent number: 3968030
Abstract: In a chemical processing plant such as a petroleum refinery, provision is made for steam boilers and heating furnaces in which the energy consumed by the boilers for generating steam exceeds the energy consumed by the heating furnaces. The steam is produced at a pressure level which is sufficient to operate at least one back-pressure turbo-alternator, then to heat the chemical process stream to a sufficiently high temperature by heat exchange with the steam recovered at the outlet of the turbo-alternator.

  • Patent number: 3967421
Abstract: A tie for connecting together parts of a structure, for example a stay for suspending the deck of a bridge from a tower, is constructed so that its length can be adjusted in a simple manner with the tie in service. The tie is made up from several stressed steel tendons, enclosed in a protective sheath filled with hardened material. At its ends the sheath incorporates anchoring devices for the transfer of the pull from the tie to the structure. The sheath forms a conduit whose ends are fixed securely to the anchoring devices. The conduit is isolated, throughout its length, from the structure so as to be capable of sliding longitudinally with respect thereto. At least one of the anchoring devices includes connection means for the active part of a tensioning apparatus and also includes means for bearing against the structure. This bearing means is adjustable on the anchoring device in the longitudinal direction of the tie.

  • Patent number: 3964298
Abstract: A housing adjacent the anvil of a penetrometer has a pair of parallel upright guides on one of which is slideable a first counterweight and on the other of which slides a second counterweight and a slide underneath this second counterweight. The first counterweight weighs more than the slide but less than the slide and second counterweight together. A chain passes over a sprocket at the top of the housing and has one end secured to the first counterweight and another end to the slide. An abutment on the second counterweight engages over a follower on the anvil so that as the anvil goes up and down the second counterweight follows it. During normal descent of the anvil and second counterweight a ratchet engaging the wheel prevents return rotation of this wheel, but once the second counterweight is all the way at the bottom of its guide the ratchet is pulled back. Upward movement of this second counterweight from this position through a distance equal to one tube length reactuates the ratchet.

  • Patent number: 3962891
Abstract: A yarn supply device for a rectilinear knitting machine capable of supplying the needles of the machine with a predetermined quantity of yarn irrespective of the speed of operation of the machine. The supply device comprises a yarn feed unit incorporating a drive member such as a pulley around which the yarn is wound in order to obtain positive drive engagement, the pulley being driven by an electric motor energized with an error signal derived from the output signal of a transducer sensitive to the actual displacement speed of the yarn feed device, and a signal representing the desired speed derived from the displacement and speed of a cam bar and thrower bar of the knitting machine. Arrangements are made for compensation in the error signal for the different stretch in the yarn in dependence on the position of the thrower with respect to a fixed yarn guide, and also for the inertia of the drive member of the yarn feed unit.

  • Patent number: 3958646
Abstract: A penetrometer frame for mounting on, for example, a truck and comprising a fixed part provided with slides which guide a moving part in the form of a frame which itself serves as a guide for a driving hammer and which may be raised or lowered by two hydraulic rams. The fixed part of the frame is pivoted on a platform about a horizontal pivot offset from the point where tubes are inserted or removed. The arrangement is such that extending the rams causes the penetrometer frame to pivot and allows access to the position at which tubes are inserted or removed.
