Abstract: The invention relates to a system for monitoring and managing a point-to-multipoint access network to connect a line terminal (10.sub.1) to a plurality of network terminations (30). Each network termination (30) comprises facilities (31) for detecting transmission errors. For each error that is so detected, facilities (31) generate a word (m) which is representative of the detected error. Processing facilities (33) are provided in order to process the words generated by the detection facilities (31). In each network termination (30), there are simulation facilities (38) for generating simulated error words (ms) and facilities (32) for replacing for the errors which are detected by the detection facilities and by the simulated error words (ms) generated by the said simulation facilities. The point is to provide known signals which can be monitored in order to test the accuracy of the equipment.
Abstract: An amplifier circuit has an amplifying transistor which is switched on and off by a switching transistor under control of a control signal selectively applied to the switching transistor. In this way a selection is made whether or not to amplify an input signal on an antenna. The switching transistor forms part of the biasing circuit for the amplifying transistor such that when the switching transistor is on the amplifying transistor is biased off. A PIN diode and series resistor are together connected in shunt across the switching transistor such that the bias voltage which causes the amplifying transistor to be off causes the PIN diode to be forward biased thereby causing the antenna to be terminated with the resistor the value of which may be chosen to be 50 ohms.
Abstract: A multiplier and a neural network synapse capable of removing nonlinear current using current mirror circuits. The multiplier produces a linear current by using MOS transistors operating in a nonsaturation region. The multiplier includes a first current mirror including a plurality of MOS transistors to form a first current and a second current mirror including a plurality of MOS transistors to form a second current, wherein the second current mirror is coupled in parallel to the first current mirror. As a result, the multiplier outputs an output current by subtracting a second current from said first current.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for calculating the most efficient bandwidth allocation for multimedia traffic under aggregate traffic conditions within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network, in a manner which maximizes long term revenue. First, the total number of service groups within the network is specified by a network operator or a network designer. Each service group may contain multiple different types of communication traffic. Thereafter, for each service group, the number of users who utilize the services within that service group is determined. The average idle sojourn time and average burst sojourn time for each system state are then determined for each service group. Next, a specification of the peak rate, the probability that a user will access the service during a specified busy period, and an average session duration are determined.
Abstract: A baffle arrangement, interposed between a series of modules of electronic components and a fan, helps to improve the evenness of flow of air drawn through the components by the fan. The baffle arrangement comprises a series of channels. A first half of the channels runs from one end of the series of modules, across approximately half of the modules. A second half of the channels runs from approximately half-way across the series of modules to the other end of the series of modules. There is a gap between each channel and an adjacent channel of approximately the width of a channel. The first half of the channels is offset from the second half of the channels by approximately the width of a channel such that no channel from the first half of channels is collinear with a channel from the second half of channels. Air drawn up from a module into a channel must flow along the channel to the end of the channel (approximately mid-way across the series of modules) before being drawn into the fan.

Abstract: To test a cell in a cellular telecommunication network, a test mobile station is placed in the network near the cell and a server is connected to fixed communication devices of the network via a switched telephone network. The cell is confirmed to be operating correctly if a first call requested by the server to the test mobile station is set up and then cleared down by the test mobile station after first parameters transmitted by the server are received in the test mobile station, and thereafter if a second call requested by the test mobile station to the server via the cell under test is set up and then cleared down by the test mobile station after second parameters emitted by the test mobile station are received in the server. If this is not the case, the server reports incidents during the first or second call.

Abstract: A multi-port RAM (random access memory) includes RAM cells which are coupled to respective row and column lines of each port. RAM cells selected by signals on the row and column lines of a port store binary data. A ground level voltage is applied onto selected column lines in a shadow write mode. Any short between the active column lines and the column lines in shadow write will result in a significant error voltage being applied to the active column line and invalid read will result. Shorts between column lines from different ports are sensitized.

Abstract: In a multicellular radio communications network, when a mobile station satisfies a criterion for automatic intercellular handover from a source cell to a target cell, the speed of movement of the mobile station with respect to the base station of the target cell is estimated on the basis of the measured levels of the signal which the mobile station has received from this base station before the handover criterion is satisfied. Depending on the layers of the cells concerned, it is then possible to take account of this speed estimate in order to decide whether or not to trigger intercellular handovers.

Abstract: Access to a CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection) network is provided via a telephone line by providing a master modem at the head end and a slave modem at the subscriber end of the line. The master modem provides a CSMA/CD interface to the network and controls half duplex communications with the slave modem via the line to avoid collisions of information packets on the line. The information packets are enveloped in frames on the line with error checking information; control information between the modems is contained in the same and/or in separate frames. The modulation method and signal bandwidth can be varied depending on errors to provide optimum communications capacity via any particular line, and a ratio of upstream to downstream information packets can be varied depending on buffer fills at the modems. The master modem can be multiplexed for multiple lines.

Abstract: As was seen in the long distance market when it became de-regulated, there were many instances of unauthorized transfers of a customer from one long distance provider to another. Customers having not requested a transfer would not be made aware of the completed transfer until at the earliest the first billing received from the new long distance provider. Once LNP network solutions are implemented and the various service providers can provide their customers with the various types of LNP, service providers and their subscribers will require automated methods of porting as disclosed which reduce the number of unauthorized porting requests including the unauthorized transfers of subscribers from one service provider to another.
Abstract: An avalanche photodiode having an absorption zone, a multiplication zone, and a transition zone disposed between the absorption zone and the multiplication zone, the transition zone being doped and being constituted at least in part by a material of composition that is graded such that the energy bands of the structure are substantially continuous when it is biased, wherein said doping is distributed non-uniformly in said graded composition zone so as to compensate, at least in part, the reverse electric field due to the composition grading of the material in the transition zone.
Abstract: An echo cancelling system for communication systems. The system includes an adaptive filter that processes the speech signal re-constructed by a voice decoder to generate an echo estimate. The echo estimate is subtracted from the echo containing signal propagating in the communication link to remove or at least reduce the echo corruption. The tap coefficients of the adaptive filter are established on the basis of an error signal that is representative of difference between the echo estimate and the actual echo and on the basis of a signal element that is a component of the re-constructed speech signal. The signal element is highly decorrelated to enable the adaptive filter to converge faster and manifest an improved echo return loss enhancement.
Abstract: In a method of assembling an electronic component onto a substrate, a fiducial is defined by a solder mask positioned upon the substrate. A fiducial-defining window in the mask has a base of the window completely provided with a material of different light-reflecting quality than the mask surface. This provides for the peripheral edge of the window, i.e. the mask, to be the edge of the fiducial. Windows in the mask which expose terminal pads upon the substrate and fixed in position relative to edges of the fiducial and both these windows and the fiducial are determined by the mask. Surface mount components are then located upon the substrate relative to the window positions and not relative to the terminal pad positions. This process reduces the number of incorrect connections of terminals of components to terminal pads.

Abstract: A system in a receiver of ATM cells determines an average cell interarrival time by determining the amount of time required for a predetermined number of cells to arrive. The system then uses the average cell interarrival time to adjust the internal timing of the receiver.
