Patent number: 5892537Abstract: An audio-visual telecommunications system comprises a videophone terminal including a videophone communication interface for making a connection to a telecommunications network. A picture processing unit receives audio-visual signals from the videophone terminal which it process in order to compose a picture with sound. The picture processing unit transmits signals representing the composite picture to a television set. The picture processing unit includes an image memory which stores visual signals in a digital form as they are received from the videophone communication interface. Patent number: 5892858Abstract: A method for encoding a binary input sequence x(0,1) to obtain a duobinary output sequence y(+1,0,-1) is provided. The duobinary coding technique always provides an output bit y.sub.k =0 when the corresponding bit x.sub.k =0; bits y.sub.k alternatively assume a logical level "+1" and "-1" whenever an input bit x.sub.k-1 =0 changes to x.sub.k =1, and the output bit y.sub.k maintains the logical level "+1" or "-1" whenever the corresponding bit x.sub.k maintains the logical level "1". A coding device for encoding a binary input sequence x(0,1) to a duobinary output sequence y(+1,0,-1) is also provided, comprising a D-type flip-flop for generating a binary switch signal. A first AND circuit receives the input sequence and the switch signal, and provides a first binary sequence a(0,1), while a second AND circuit receives the input sequence and the complement of the switch signal and provides a second binary sequence b(0,1).Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1997Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Mazoud Vaziri, Maurice S. Patent number: 5893056Abstract: In methods and apparatus for generating an LPC-encoded noise signal from an LPC-encoded speech signal, excitation parameters of the LPC-encoded speech signal for a current frame are randomized upon detection of speech in the current frame. For frames in which no speech is detected, LPC coefficients and frame energy for the current frame may be replaced with respective averages calculated over the current frame and a plurality of preceding frames. For frames in which speech is detected, LPC coefficients for the current frame may be replaced with respective averages of LPC coefficients used to replace LPC coefficients of an immediately previous frame. The comfort noise generation technique is particularly suitable for use in echo suppressors for digital cellular radio systems.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1997Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Madeleine Saikaly, Rafi Rabipour

Patent number: 5890065Abstract: A method, for use in a mobile communications system (MCS), efficiently generates routing information when a caller of a first electronic switching system (ESS) calls a receiver's phone connected to a second ESS through a base station system, wherein the routing information is used for the first ESS to choose one of a plurality of transit networks (TN's) formed between the ESS's to communicate voice messages and/or data between the caller and the receiver. At a first step, if there is a first demand signal from the first ESS, roaming information representing the location of the receiver is derived, wherein the first demand signal is generated when an identification code, indicating that the receiver is a mobile subscriber, is received by the first ESS from the caller.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1996Date of Patent: March 30, 1999Assignee: Daewoo Telecom, Ltd.Inventors: Weon-Ho Seo, Su-Jeung Choi

Patent number: 5890052Abstract: A portable wireless telephone structure in which a foldable wallet carries a telephone in addition to having a pocket to house paper currency. The telephone is exposed for use with the wallet in open condition and is housed with the wallet in closed condition. The telephone has a communication mode to a user monetary function to permit telephonic transfer of monetary units. Thus, the telephone may eliminate need for carrying credit or bank cards in the wallet except for the telephone use with a "smart" card for telephonic transfer of monetary amounts to the "smart" card for transaction purposes.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1996Date of Patent: March 30, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Clifford D. Patent number: 5887368Abstract: A cable tag allows information about the identity of a communications or power cable and its route to be secured to the cable. The cable tag is secured to a cable in such a way that it can be readily removed and re-secured if necessary. For installation, a portion of a liner adhered to a face stock of the cable tag is removed to expose adhesive. Folding the tag around the cable causes the areas of exposed adhesive to come into contact with each other and with the cable. The remaining portion of the liner on the back of the face stock provides a non-adherent surface where a user's fingers can easily separate the cable tag from the cable. The cable tag includes removable sub-labels to permanently fix originating and terminating information to the cable after installation. The remaining part of the cable tag may then be removed and discarded if necessary.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1997Date of Patent: March 30, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventor: Diana A. Patent number: 5886907Abstract: The method and system of the present invention can be utilized to model aggregate multimedia traffic within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network, so that customer expectations can be met and the network can be constructed and utilized efficiently. A total number of different traffic services, as well as a maximum number of sources of each service are specified by a network operator. Next, a quality of service characterization for each service is determined, based upon available standards. Average sojourn time for each service is determined by modeling each Constant Bit Rate (CBR) service as a Renewal Process, each Variable Bit Rate (VBR) real-time service as a multistate Modulated Discrete Process and each Variable Bit Rate (VBR) non-real-time service as an On-Off Process. Sojourn mean times can thereafter be obtained from measurements or published standards.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Hosame Hassan Abu-Amara, Venkat Kotamarti

Patent number: 5884486Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus and method for efficiently removing humidity from a chamber. A thermoelectric cooler with a maintained temperature differential between the cool and warm sides of the cooler is used to condense the humidity from within the chamber upon the cool side of the cooler. The condensate is transferred to the warm side of the cooler and then removed through the capillary penetration into a porous structure of an evaporator at the warm side of the cooler and further evaporation. During evaporation, the condensate extracts heat from the warm side of the cooler, the temperature of the cool side of the cooler being also decreased, which results in an increase of the overall efficiency of the apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1997Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Richard Pierre Hughes, Trevor George Zapach, Seaho Song

Patent number: 5886984Abstract: A method and system are provided for calculating the total service capacity for multimedia traffic under aggregate traffic conditions within a shared transmission medium, such as an ATM network. A total number of different types of telecommunication traffic is specified by the network operator or network designer. Each different type of network telecommunication traffic is referred to as a service. Next, each week is partitioned into several busy periods. This partitioning is provided by the network operator and may include multiple days, for example: Monday-Friday; and, Saturday-Sunday. Thereafter, for each busy day described above, the day is further partitioned into several busy periods, each period discernible from a previous period by the level of activity expected within the network at that time. For example, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; and, 5:00 p.m.-7:00 a.m. Once again, this information is provided by the network operator or network designer.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: March 23, 1999Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: Hosame Hassan Abu-Amara, Venkat Kotamarti
