Abstract: A latency counter for use in relatively complex systems having relatively large numbers of devices with associated timers. Whenever a timer is activated by setting a time period, the latency counter is set to the larger of its current value or a value associated with the time period of the last-expiring timer. Prior to scanning the timers to determine if a timer has expired, the latency counter is checked. If the value of the latency counter is equal to a predetermined value, then no timers are active and no scanning is performed. If the value of the latency counter is not equal to the predetermined value, the latency counter value is modified and a scanning operation of each timer is performed to determine if any timers have expired. Considerable processing resources can be saved.

Abstract: In determining the angular rotational position of axial asymmetries of bodies like optical PM-fibers such a body or fiber is illuminated during rotations thereof to different angular positions around its longitudinal axis. For different angular positions the difference is then determined between light, which has passed through the fiber end and in its position corresponds to the central part of the fiber, and light, which has passed through the fiber end and in its position corresponds to the region of the fiber located immediately outside the central part. These differences, considered as a function of the rotation angle, constitute a curve that is analyzed for finding the regions thereof having the steepest descent or increase, such as a valley region. Only these regions are then used for determining the position of the optical asymmetries. Thus the fiber can be rotated during only this interval determining the curve more accurately by using more densely spaced measurement points within the interval.
Abstract: Locking device for a connector for cooperation with a recess of a member with which the connector is to be connected, said locking device being made of spring elastic material and comprising two shanks which are movable towards and away from each other. At least one of the shanks has, at its end opposite the connector, on its side facing away from the other shank, a protruding hooking means. The shanks are tapered in the direction towards the end opposite the connector and pass over into resilient portions, which have substantially even thickness, have thinner walls than the shanks and project towards each other, said resilient portions being connected by a connecting portion. At the ends facing the connector the shanks form a functionally common base portion.
Abstract: The invention relates to a GSM-type telecommunications system having a superordinate unit or Home Location Register (HLR) which includes software necessary for base functions and relevant supplementary services. The software in the superordinate unit (HLR) is structured such to provide a first software set-up (21) for requisite base functions, a second software set-up (22) for added supplementary services, and a third software set-up (23) for coordinating the first and second software set-ups, so that the third software set-up (23) can be adapted to enable a supplementary service-related portion (22a) of the second software set-up (22) to be included or removed without affecting the first software set-up.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for compensating for the long term drift of an oscillator. Signals from hydrogen clouds are received and processed to generate an adjustment signal, which is used to adjust the frequency of the oscillator. The adjustment signal is derived from a frequency spectrum midpoint estimated from the signal strength of the received signals.

Abstract: An intra-cell handover method in a cellular communication system which utilizes spatial information from an antenna array is disclosed. The spatial information is measured with the antenna array. A determination is then made on whether an intra-cell handover is desirable for a mobile station based upon said measured spatial information. The mobile station is then handed over from a first channel to a second channel when desirable and spatial filters in transceivers for mobile stations using the first and second channels are computed based on the spatial information.
Abstract: A method and device are provided for of supporting a plurality of mobile station operation modes in a wireless communication system by user control. Presently, communication protocols exist for supporting end user equipment which operates in a single mode of operation. However, it is desirable to combine protocols from various technologies to form end user equipment which operates in multiple modes of operation. Thereby, the present method allows the mobile station to operate in a multi-mode environment where a user can invoke a certain mode.

Abstract: A balanced frequency responsive circuit comprising circuit components formed in a semiconductor chip having first and second on-chip contact terminals which connect to first and second off-chip contact terminals, respectively, and a balanced parallel resonator circuit coupled to the contact terminals. The resonator circuit comprises a capacitance portion and an inductance portion. Part of the capacitance portion is on-chip connected between the first and second on-chip contact terminals. Another part of the capacitance portion and the inductance portion are off-chip series connected between the first and second off-chip contact terminals such that the contact terminals are comprised in a single resonant loop, essentially producing no spurious resonance signals.

Abstract: A fast and efficient system and method for network management under traffic overload conditions is described. The technique uses an algorithm to automatically generate a close approximation of the optimum working state of a telecommunications network when the actual traffic is found to be greater than network capacity. The algorithm uses traffic blockage measurements obtained from distributed network switches and generates code blocking parameters that can be applied to the distributed network switches to enhance total revenue. The described technique provides additional revenue gains over that obtainable by partially rerouting traffic away from congested network links. The use of the described code blocking technique may be discontinued when the conditions causing the network overload are determined to have disappeared.
Abstract: A method for suppressing interference in an integrated communication/computing device is disclosed. First, an interrupt signal is sent from a transceiver to a computing device when the transceiver is about to transmit or receive information. In response to the interrupt signal, the computing device stacks current status and enters an interrupt routine. The computing device is then released from the interrupt routine after the information has been transmitted or received.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for detecting, estimating, and compensating for unwanted d.c. offsets in sampled signals in a direct conversion receiver are described. These methods and devices can be used for varying d.c. offsets, ramps, and steps to realize a direct-conversion receiver for modem cellular communication systems that does not suffer performance degradation due to strong interferers.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an arrangement for establishing a bearer capability classification of a received, incoming call to an ISDN exchange, the received call has a directory number, but no or faulty bearer capability classification. The method includes the steps of setting a default bearer capability to the call and if the call requires a different bearer capability then the bearer capability is being converted to the required bearer capability class.
Abstract: The invention relates to a cellular digital mobile radio system including base stations (B.sub.m, B.sub.n) and mobile stations (MS.sub.1, MS.sub.2) with transmitters and receivers. The invention also relates to a method of transmitting message information digitally between mobile and base stations in such a system. In accordance with the invention, at least two base station transmitters (B.sub.ma, B.sub.mb, B.sub.na, B.sub.nb) at a given transmitting distance from each other are assigned to each of certain cells (C.sub.m, C.sub.n) within a restricted geographical area. The base station transmitters which are assigned to the same cell transmit digitally modulated radio signals within the same frequency range at least partially simultaneously to the mobile stations of the cell. The radio signals from different base station transmitters associated with the same cell are digitally modulated with the same message information to the mobile stations in the cell.
