  • Patent number: 4206128
Abstract: An improved method is disclosed for the vapor phase epoxidation of ethylene to ethylene oxide which includes intimately contacting an ethylene-containing feed stream with an epoxidizing amount of molecular oxygen epoxidizing agent in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of a novel supported, activated silver catalyst and, preferably in the presence of an effective amount of at least one inhibitor which retards combustion of ethylene to carbon dioxide at a temperature of from about 200.degree. C. to about 300.degree. C.The novel silver catalyst is best described in terms of its method of preparation. The catalyst is prepared by impregnating certain inorganic porous substrates with a specific silver carboxylate/amine complex impregnating solution. The impregnated support is then heated in order to evaporate volatiles, decompose the complex and activate the catalyst.

  • Patent number: 4197281
Abstract: This is a continuous process for producing ammonia synthesis gas and includes the partial oxidation of particles of solid carboniferous fuels entrained in nitrogen. In the process, air is separated into high pressure nitrogen and substantially pure oxygen. A first stream of said nitrogen is used as a safe pneumatic vehicle in a grinding and transport operation which introduces ground, finely divided solid carbonaceous fuel into a venturi injector where the particles of solid fuel are dispersed in a second stream of said nitrogen. The solid fuel-nitrogen gaseous dispersion is then reacted with a free-oxygen containing gas preferably in the absence of supplemental H.sub.2 O, other than any moisture normally found in the reactants, in a freeflow partial oxidation synthesis gas generator. The nitrogen stream serves as a carrier for the particles of solid carbonaceous fuel and as a temperature moderator in the gas generator. After cleaning, shifting, and purifying the raw synthesis gas, a gaseous mixture of N.sub.

  • Patent number: 4189307
Abstract: Clean HCN-free synthesis gas is produced from raw synthesis gas leaving a partial-oxidation gas generator by a continuous process comprising the steps of partial cooling, scrubbing with condensate, cooling below the dew point by indirect heat exchange preferably with a rich liquid absorbent from a downstream acid-gas-removal zone, and scrubbing with cold aqueous absorbent. The rich HCN-containing aqueous absorbent is then safely processed, without polluting the environment. For example, the HCN-containing aqueous absorbent may be stripped or reacted in the gas generator. Optionally, other acid gases, if present, may be removed from the synthesis gas in said acid-gas-removal zone.
