  • Patent number: 6203056
Abstract: An apparatus for deploying an air bag through an automotive dash panel includes an air bag door integrally formed in the panel and defined by a door perimeter including a frangible edge of reduced cross section. A dispenser supports the air bag behind the door. A metal reaction plate is positioned between the air bag and the door. When the air bag inflates, it forces the reaction plate to bend around a horizontal hinge line. As the reaction plate pivots it concentrates inflation force along a lower portion of the frangible door edge. This helps to predictably separate the door from the dash panel by tearing along the lower door edge and allowing the tear to propagate up two side edges. In one embodiment, the tear also propagates across an upper edge to completely separate the door from the panel. At least one, and preferably two or three tethers limit how far the door can travel during air bag inflation. A stop member may be included to limit reaction plate bending.

  • Patent number: 6198538
Abstract: In an apparatus and method for remote ultrasonic determination of thin material properties, a match filter calibration technique is employed. For a plurality of known material property values and known material thicknesses, an elastic stress wave is generated in the material at a source location. The intensity of a signal generated by the elastic stress wave is sensed at a sense location positioned a known distance from the source location. A feature is selected from among the sensed signals which demonstrates minimal thickness dependents from a plurality of known material thicknesses. The selected feature is applied to the sensed signals to determine propagation time of the signals over the known distance. A calibration curve is then generated to characterize the relationship between signal propagation time and material property value for each material thickness.

  • Patent number: 6195035
Abstract: A monopulse antenna system comprising an inner antenna and an outer antenna disposed symmetrically about a central axis of symmetry. A central aperture is located at the axis of symmetry through which a weapon system may fire or an additional sensor may be located. The inner antenna is preferably annular in shape and produces a relatively broad antenna pattern. The outer antenna is also preferably annular and produces a beam pattern with many lobes. The received signals A and B, from each beam pattern, are combined in a hybrid to produce sum signals (A+B) and difference signals (A−B), which are then processed to produce a target off-axis radius relative to the antenna main beam axis, i.e., the axis of symmetry.

  • Patent number: 6184981
Abstract: Multiple independent spectral measurements of light reflected from a target are produced concurrently by illuminating the target with a train of laser pulses wherein the train of pulses produces a line spectrum within the illuminating signal. A characteristic dimension of the receiving aperture is established based on illuminating wavelength, a cross-sectional dimension of illuminated region of a target, and the range between a target and the receiving aperture or image plane. The characteristic dimension corresponds to the spacing of peaks in a speckle pattern of an image plane. The use of multiple receiving telescopes having the characteristic dimension allows for independent measurements concurrently by each of the receiving telescopes. The train of illuminating pulses is generated by mode-locked operation of the laser for synchronization of sinusoidal components at line frequencies of the pulse train spectrum, and wherein the spacing of the spectral lines is at least a decorrelation frequency.

  • Patent number: 6176260
Abstract: A fuel tank for a motor vehicle, comprising a tank body with a smaller reservoir which is arranged therein and which is inserted into the tank body through a closable opening in the wall thereof, and joined thereto. The reservoir is deformable at least in portions of the wall defining same. After the reservoir has been at least partially inserted into the tank body, it undergoes a change in shape resulting in an increase in its volume within the tank body and a change in its cross-section such that the largest cross-section of the reservoir is larger than the cross-section of the opening of the wall in the tank body, that is available for insertion of the reservoir. The reservoir is defined at its ends by rigid components and the deformable wall portion of the reservoir is in the region between those components.

  • Patent number: 6174396
Abstract: A trim panel having an integral handle is made using a subassembly comprising a structural substrate that has a handle hole and a handle frame that spans the handle hole. The subassembly is mounted on a pneumatic buck and a sheet of pliable and stretchable expanded vinyl plastic is then draped over the subassembly to form a decorative cover for the trim panel. The plastic sheet is then vacuum drawn against the top of the subassembly and partially around the handle frame. Draped portions of the plastic sheet between the handle frame and the handle hole, are then cut and trimmed, to complete the wrapping of the handle frame and the edge of the handle hole. The cut ends of the draped portions wrapped around the handle frame are tucked in a longitudinal slot in the underside of the handle frame.
