  • Patent number: 5052870
Abstract: A blind fastener comprises a fastener body, a stem and a shaped shear ring wire. The shear ring in one embodiment is disposed in an annular groove disposed intermediate the ends of a neck of the stem. When the fastener is installed, a bulbing portion of the shear ring upsets the tail end of the fastener and then shears at a predetermined load. An anchor portion of the shear ring travels through the fastener body, with the stem neck radially expanding the fastener to fill the hole within the workpieces being secured together. A lock ring groove is formed in the stem midsection of smaller diameter at the intersections of the stem neck and midsection. In another embodiment, the shear ring is positioned at the intersection so that the shear ring anchor portion engages the rear of a lock ring positioned in said lock ring groove.

  • Patent number: 5049036
Abstract: A composite gas turbine engine blade is made by braiding a plurality of fibers to form a preform having an airfoil precursor portion and an integral root precursor portion. A plurality of fiber shaping inserts are positioned in the root precursor portion, either by braiding the root precursor portion around the inserts or inserting the fiber shaping inserts into the root precursor portion after braiding, to impart an enlarged, divergent shape (e.g., dovetail precursor shape) to the braided root precursor portion. The braided preform with the enlarged, shaped root precursor portion is infiltrated with matrix material and shaped to near net shape to provide the composite blade with a dovetail shaped root.

  • Patent number: 5047966
Abstract: A coordinate measuring machine is used to extract data points from an airfoil surface. The machine is controlled to move a probe to desired points by a generic program applicable to any airfoil and a nominal data file specific to the type of airfoil being measured containing coordinates of desired data points, surface normal vectors and optional machine control instructions arranged in the order of usage. The program reads the data file and predicts the location of corresponding data points on the surface from the file data and deviation information available from already-sampled data points on the blade. An analysis program accepts the data points, mathematically reconstructs portions of the airfoil and measures dimensions from those portions. The dimensions are compared to tolerances read from another file specific to the airfoil type.

  • Patent number: 5045649
Abstract: A self-adjusting slide assembly is provided for mounting a weight on gear switch to an aircraft. The slide assembly is particularly adapted for mounting on a skid equipped helicopter for responding to vertical oscillatory deflection of a cross tube of the skid landing gear. A mounting bracket is attached to the underside of the helicopter for supporting a back plate and a pair of clamp plates. A C-shaped slide member has a flange mounted between the back plate and clamp plates so as to slide vertically. Take-off and landing stresses cause the cross tube to exhibit vertical oscillatory deflection between an upper arm and a lower arm of the slide member. A microswitch mounted on the lower arm is actuated when the cross tube contacts a bottom bumper on the lower arm while the helicopter is fully on skid gear.

  • Patent number: 5043110
Abstract: A method for testing foam formulations for the quantitative measure of the effects of formulation and/or process variable changes on some kinds of surface problems of a molded part caused by different degrees of imperfection or voiding underneath the part surface. The molded part can be single component or composite, solid or foamed. One example of the surface problem is the so-called "measles or cellulite" problem observed on the vinyl surface of a vinyl/foam composite due to the voids or rattiness within the foam. To accomplish this result, the mold has various sized, spaced apart, aligned openings formed in each of the front and rear walls of the mold, but with the centers thereof at different elevations in the respective front and rear walls. Removable rods inserted through the aligned mold wall openings produce longitudinal openings through the part which is molded around the rods, permitting the effect thereof on the surface of the molded part to be evaluated.

  • Patent number: 5036576
Abstract: A powered fastener installation apparatus and method wherein the successful installation of a fastener is indicated by directly detecting the event of the fastener stem breaking. The device releases any partially upset fastener before withdrawing from the workpiece so as to prevent damage to the workpiece. The fastener installation device includes means for transferring the fastener from a feed module to the pulling head and avoiding partial upsetting or disassembly of the fastener, which can lead to jamming the device. The pulling head and transfer apparatus are provided with a vacuum to retain the fastener without mechanical gripping, thereby allowing easy purging of the fastener and preventing the fastener from falling out of the device unintentionally. Moreover, use of the vacuum retention allows greater flexibility and tolerance of errors in the placement and angular orientation of the robot arm and workpiece.
