Patent number: 4797022Abstract: An improved fastener provides axially extending teeth on a narrow shoulder adjacent the fastener head. The teeth bite into sheet material, and are particularly useful in biting into the surface of a thin sheet which is fastened to a thicker sheet material. The teeth extend from a shoulder formed on a medial collar between the head and a threaded shank. The narrow shoulder has a larger diameter than the end of the threaded shank to which the shoulder is joined. The teeth can be formed by cold-flow of the material of the shoulder so that the teeth axially extend from the outer peripheral edge of the shoulder in order to bite into the thin sheet metal proximate the annular periphery of the aperture in which the threaded shank is engaged. Preferably, the teeth axially overlap the threading of the shank which extends entirely to its junction with the shoulder, and the teeth are fabricated after the shank thread in order to enable such overlap by the teeth.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 1987Date of Patent: January 10, 1989Assignee: Textron Inc.Inventor: Edward G. Patent number: 4793784Abstract: The apparatus includes a first female mold member defining a shaped mold cavity for receiving a plastisol layer or skin. A second mold member is pivotally disposed on the female mold member between an open and closed position. In the open position, the second mold member receives and holds thereon a portion of the plastisol skin extending from the mold cavity. An insert is positioned in the mold cavity by a third mold member such as a mold lid on which the insert is releasably retained. After the insert is positioned in the mold cavity, the second mold member is pivoted toward the mold lid to fold the skin portion thereon over and against an edge of the insert. The skin is folded adjacent the pivot axis of the second mold member. Foam can then be introduced and cured between the skin and insert.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1987Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Assignee: Davidson Textron Inc.Inventors: Ernest L. Patent number: 4793793Abstract: The apparatus includes a first female mold member defining a mold cavity for receiving a plastisol skin or layer. A second mold member or slide is positioned with a surface thereon contiguous with the surface of the mold cavity. The surface of the second mold member receives and holds thereon a portion of the plastisol skin extending from the mold cavity. A third mold member, such as a mold core, positions a rigid insert in the mold cavity with an insert surface or edge adjacent the portion of the plastisol skin on the second mold member. The second mold member includes passages for directing fluid pressure against the portion of skin thereon to fold it over the adjacent insert edge. A fourth mold member, such as a mold lid, is movable toward the second and third mold members for pressing the folded-over skin against the insert during foam formation between the skin and insert.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1988Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Assignee: Davidson Textron Inc.Inventors: Harold W. Patent number: 4782992Abstract: An improved method of forming an article includes providing continuous, woven, flat, helical tape of filaments and a continuous flat, helical tape of foil. The two helical tapes are interleaved to form a helical assembly having turns of filaments alternating with turns of foil. Deformation forces are applied against the turns of the helical assembly in a direction parallel to the central axis of the helix to bond the turns of the tapes off oil and filament together while maintaining the filaments free of axially extending forces. During the bonding of the turns of the helical foil and filament tapes, the tapes may be bonded to a housing or other component of an article to be reinforced. Radial reinforcing can be provided by including in the helical assembly a layer having filaments with central axes which are radial relative to the central axes of the filaments of the helical tape.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1986Date of Patent: November 8, 1988Assignee: Textron Inc.Inventor: Gordon S. Patent number: 4767367Abstract: The propeller shaft fairing is U-shaped in vertical section, and is partitioned to provide two separate sea chests from which water may be drawn for engine cooling purposes. The wall of the fairing in the region of the foremost sea chest is slot-wise apertured parallel to the propeller shaft and adjacent to the uprising side of the shaft when it is rotating to propel the craft forwardly, whereupon water is both rammed and pumped into the forward sea chest. The wall of the fairing in the region of the rearmost sea chest is apertured so that when the craft is moving in reverse water is rammed thereinto. Thus, under all conditions an adequate source of cooling water is available via at least one of the sea chests. The cooling water pump intake conduit includes separate branches drawing from the sea chests, and these branches are valve controlled automatically by means of the craft's operating control system.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1987Date of Patent: August 30, 1988Assignee: Textron Inc.Inventor: Robert A.
