    Abstract: A method for fabricating long-length and/or large-sized dense filamentary reinforced monotapes. The method comprises forming a layered sandwich of matrix foils or encapsulating sheets plus foils around a reinforcing mat of collimated fibers and sealing the edges of the assembly. The sealing step is carried out with the sandwich formed to a predetermined arcuate configuration such that the sandwich can be coiled after edge sealing without buckling the encapsulating sheets or disturbing the filament alignment and orientation. The formation of the sealed, encapsulated preform can be carried out using continuous processing techniques. Subsequent processing, such as densification, can be performed with the preform in the coiled condition or after it is uncoiled to approximately the arcuate configuration of the sealing step.

    Abstract: A fastener having a retaining member with a top portion and an elongated hub extending downwardly from the top portion. A helical groove extends throughout a substantial portion of the length of the hub and the upper end of the helical groove is formed to change the lead between the upper end of the helical groove and at least the uppermost loop of a helical coil mounted in the helical groove to create a tensile load on the hub by a helical coil having at least the uppermost loop located in the helical groove. A helical coil with a plurality of loops has at least the uppermost loop located in the helical groove in the hub, and the end portion of the uppermost loop contacts the portion of the groove formed to change the lead to create a tensile load on the hub to mount the helical coil on the hub.

    Abstract: An electrochemical machine of the type having a workpart shroud around the workpart except for the portion thereof to be received in an electrolyte chamber with the shroud and electrolyte chamber substantially enclosing the workpart during machining is provided with opposing clamps on an electrolyte chamber member to cammingly engage opposite lateral sides of the shroud to hold it against the electrolyte chamber member to reduce high pressure electrolyte leakage.A venting conduit system is provided from the shroud through mated engaged surfaces of the shroud and electrolyte chamber member to an electrolyte drain in the electrolyte chamber to vent gases from the shroud during machining. Flow of high pressure electrolyte through the electrolyte chamber and drain creates a suction on the shroud interior to cause venting of gases, such as hydrogen, therefrom.

    Abstract: A workpart to be the anode for electrochemical machining by a cathode tool is disposed on a shaft having a free end. An electrical coupling housing is disposed on the free end for movement thereon between electrical contact and non-contact positions. A stop extends axially from the free end of the shaft on a connector rod. A fluid actuated piston/cylinder assembly is disposed on the connector rod between the electrical coupling housing and stop. When the piston is actuated, it extends to abut the stop and, as a result of the reaction force, causes the cylinder housing to bias the coupling housing in the opposite direction from piston movement to the electrical contact position to effect electrical connection between the coupling housing and free end of the shaft.The workpart shaft includes a peripheral toothed portion driven by a pinion gear to index the shaft and workpart thereon.

    Abstract: A fastener-carrier system comprises at least one metallic threaded fastener member including a head portion, a tip portion and an externally threaded shank portion intermediate the head and tip portions and defining an axis. A carrier strip comprises a substantially flat, elongate member of a moldable material and the fastener head portion is moldably embedded into the carrier strip with the tip and threaded shank portions projecting outwardly of the carrier strip. The carrier strip includes a substantially flat workpiece-engaging surface, with the fastener extending outwardly thereof for extending into a receiving aperture in a facing workpiece surface. A raised, elastically deformable skirt portion is provided on the workpiece-engaging surface surrounding each fastener for positively engaging the workpiece surface and for deforming sufficiently thereagainst to form a seal completely around an otherwise exposed portion of the fastener at the workpiece-engaging surface.

    Abstract: The cutting tool includes a tool body having a longitudinal channel to receive different sizes (outer diameters) of shielded cable for cutting and a cutter arm movably mounted on the body to bring a rotatable cutter blade into the channel to cut the shielding. A transverse adjusting member is mounted on the tool body for movement toward or away from the channel to adjustably position a pivotable cable clamp detent in the channel and includes a biasing spring that allows pivotable deflection of the clamp detent toward one end of the channel when the cable is inserted from the other end and return of the clamp detent to a cable clamp position when the cable is moved slightly in the opposite direction to prevent cable movement as a result of cutting forces. Movement of the adjusting member controls the adjusted position of the clamp detent in the channel and means is provided on the adjusting member to releasably lock same for a particular size of shielded cable to be cut.

    Abstract: A mold assembly for manufacturing composite plastic products includes a mold cavity part and a lid, which is joined to form a cavity for foam precursors. The precursors expand in the cavity in a known manner to fill the cavity with a suitable layer of foamed material, such as foamed urethane. The mold cavity supports an exterior shell and the lid supports an insert for reinforcing a finished composite product. A sleeve is integrally formed on the preformed shell and it in turn is located within an access port formed through wall of the cavity part to define a slideway for receipt of a pour head extension. The extension is selectively clamped and unclamped with respect to the shell sleeve by an inflatable seal clamp which is formed as an annular ring with a pressurizable passage connected to a source of selectively applied pressure.

    Abstract: The limited angle rotary force motor includes an inner pole member having multiple permanent magnets disposed on the exterior thereof and a longitudinal bore in which a rotor shaft is journaled for rotation. An annular low inertia coil assembly is positioned in spaced relation around the permanent magnets by sets of spoke-like arms extending from the rotor shaft through transverse openings in the inner pole means. An annular ferritic stainless steel outer pole sleeve is located in spaced relation around the coil assembly to complete the magnetic circuit and withstand hydraulic system pressure to which the motor components are exposed. The outer pole piece is part of the casing or housing for the servovalve.

    Abstract: A constant velocity joint (200) for interconnecting a first shaft (202) to a second shaft (204) for bidirectional drive is provided. The constant velocity joint employs a carrier (218) which is formed with a series of apertures for receiving elastomeric bearing assemblies (220). The elastomeric bearing assemblies are provided with a spherical elastomeric bearing (60) and a cylindrical elastomeric bearing (48). Certain of the elastomeric bearing assemblies connect the carrier to one of the rotated members while the remaining elastomeric bearing assemblies connect the other rotating member to the carrier. The axis of symmetry of the carrier (218) will always bisect the angle of misalignment between the two rotating shafts to assure that a constant velocity joint is achieved.

    Abstract: A nozzle apparatus for focusing a beam of collimated radiation from a laser source has a spring mounted nozzle which contains the focusing lens or mirror system for establishing the actual size of the focal spot of the beam on a workpiece. Engagement of the tip of the nozzle with the workpiece or other obstacles will cause the nozzle to tilt away from the obstacle and means are responsive to such tilting movement to stop machine operation in order to clear the obstacle from the programmed path of operation of the spring mounted nozzle. Furthermore, means are provided to cause the entire assembly to be deflected upwardly when encountering an obstacle that is located in a centered relationship below the nozzle tip. The spring mounted nozzle repositions itself when it is free of the obstacle.
