Abstract: Methods are provided for determining, in a single polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reaction, the quantity, quality, and gender of origin of DNA in a sample, and whether or not the sample contains PCR amplification inhibitors. The methods involve carrying out a single PCR multiplex reaction utilizing primer sets specific for amplifying: the human amelogenin locus; an X- and/or Y-chromosome specific gene that is shorter than the amelogenin gene; at least one mitochondrial DNA sequence, and preferably two differently-sized mitochondrial sequences; and a heterologous, non-human reporter gene.

Abstract: Immunogenic compositions and broad-spectrum vaccines containing newly identified isolates of canine distemper virus (CDV) collected from a geographic area are provided. The newly identified isolates exhibit attributes of both European wildlife lineage CDV and one or both of Arctic and American-2 lineage CDV. Therefore, the vaccines are broadly protective against infection with European wildlife lineage CDV and either Arctic lineage CDV or American-2 lineage CDV, or both Arctic and American-2 lineage CDV.

Abstract: A method is described for removing hard water components from water wherein the removed ions are not replaced by sodium ions. The method includes the steps of passing water having dissolved hard water components through a water-softening column containing a tungsten-based sorbent. The hard water components are reacted with tungsten based sorbent to remove the hard water components. The tungsten based sorbent is regenerated for later use in the step of reacting. The resulting by-products include calcium and magnesium or ammonium nitrate, all of which may be sold and used for various purposes.
